Rionep Ecnirp Etlevs
So I earned access to one of Gladwell's tomes, but deferred use of it until I had invested 3 pts in the spell. Now that I've returned, the stupid porticullis is closed. Now what do I do? EDIT: Nevermind. It was behind an unlocked door.
Lilith
You don't actually need to do that, by the way. Tomes haven't worked that way for several games; you can still buy three points of a spell even if you've gained points in it from other sources. Also, paying money to upgrade your spells is kind of a waste of money anyway.
Dahak
None of the spells are worth upgrading past level 1?
Emmisary of Immanence
Unlike A1-A3, spells don't give substantially different effects at higher levels. One level of spell is exactly the same as one level of Spellcraft or one level of Mage/Priest. Spells are therefore better at higher level, but not much better, and buying them is very expensive. You're better off saving the gold for skills that affect more than one particular spell. —Alorael, who thinks the only time it's worth buying is when you really need the first level of a spell so you can cast it. And even then, you usually don't really need it. You can be patient.
Lilith
I did eventually break down and pay for Divine Fire in the Abyss. The cost is steep, but it's useful, and the first place you can get the spell for free is after doing a couple of fairly involved quests in Silvar. I also paid for Dispel Barrier. You can get it for free from one of Gladwell's quests, but you need Dispel Barrier to do another quest in that area, and I don't think you can finish that quest after you've done Gladwell's. Emmisary of Immanence
And the other exceptions are the lowest level spells. They're cheap enough that the cost isn't much of an obstacle, and you're likely to use them extensively enough that the tiny boost is probably worthwhile. In particular, you'll be using healing all game, and your first humble Minor Healing spell is the most cost-effective of the bunch. —Alorael, who also throws around some little bits of fire all game. Sometimes mages need to add some damage and bows just don't cut it.
Randomizer
You can get Gladwell's dispel barrier instead of buying it. The barriers that are important are all piercing crystal level.
elchipeo
what about summoning spells? are those worth upgrading? it kinda pissed me off when summon aid gave me a fricken' worg, but then again, sometime's I'd get a pustulant zombie.. I always bought the highest levels of all spells for my designated mage/priest.
Randomizer
Spell levels for summoning spells only increases the length of time before a summoned creature leaves.
Lilith
I gotta be honest, I've never seen a summoned creature live long enough that the length of time it could hang around was a concern.
