I am having trouble getting past a statue asking me for the answer to a word puzzle:

REAL ... COIN

LINE ... ORCA

CLONE ... AIR

ORC ... ALIEN

CORE ... ???

 

Can anyone give me a hint on this? I'm really bad at this type of puzzle.

It's an anagram puzzle. All of the word pairs are rearrangements of each other. The last one is missing N, A, I, and L, so the answer is "nail."
