Kyshakk Koan Chaosfox
It says it requires at least a 2000 Windows operating system and I have Windows 2000 ME, but it says that won't work. Is there any way to get around this or do i just have to get a newer computer?
Rotghroth Rhapsody Locmaar
It would be best to email spidweb about it. Don't forget to include a more specific error code message, i.e. what did your OS complain about. I'm sure it will work out one way or another. Understated Ur-Drakon The Almighty Doer of Stuff
There is no "Windows 2000 ME". There is Windows ME, which is a Win16 operating system like Windows 95 and 98, and there is Windows 2000, which is a Win32 operating system, like Windows NT, XP, and Vista. Geneforge 4 is designed to run in a Win32 system, I would imagine.
Tenderfoot Thahd Teh Ubar Pie
My guess is that he's talking about the Win16 version of Windoze 2000. I would personally suggest buying XP Professional.
Understated Ur-Drakon The Almighty Doer of Stuff
What Win16 version of Windows 2000? Is there something I missed? It wouldn't be the first time that's happened.
Unflappable Drayk stepped pyramids
Uh, the last "Win16" operating system was Windows 3.1. Windows 95 and its successors all are 32-bit operating systems using the Win32 API. Windows 95, 98, and ME still have DOS lurking under the covers (although less and less as time went on); Windows NT/2000/XP/etc. do not. That's the distinction. GF4 probably requires at least Windows 2000 because (and this is a guess) it probably needs a version of DirectX not supported on previous iterations of the operating system. I understand it also stores game data in user profile directories rather than in its own directory, which suggests that it was developed for NT-series versions of Windows. However, there are incompatibilities between the 9x and NT versions of DirectX, intentionally in order to make more people move to the NT platform. The reason why DirectX 9 was even supporting the 9x platform is because at the time, the big game developers had a significant 9x userbase. However, that changed very quickly after most of the 9x series lost support from Microsoft. The big game developers could no longer hold onto that claim, and were pretty much forced to move on.
