Did I just wreck my game?

Hey all, long time Spiderweb player here, first time poster. I just purchased Avernum 5 today after playing most of the demo over the past few days.

I accidentally started a fight I couldn't win, (with the giant in the goblin area) and hadn't saved in a while so in desperation, I brought up the editor and gave my remaining 3 characters max Hardiness and Defense so they would survive the battle. I then forgot about it and continued on for approximately 30 minutes. When I remembered, I went back into the editor and it seems like I can't lower the skills back down. Am I going to lose a ton of progress and go back to a day old save or is there some way for me to lower the two skills in question back down?

Any help is appreciated as currently my game is basically screwed up.

There's no way to reduce skills with the editor. There's no way to get your skills and their cost reset to what they should be at all. But do check the autosave! It might be more recent than your last deliberately saved game.

—Alorael, who has been saved by autosaving more than once, pun unintended but duly noted.

Bummer. Yea, I did check my autosave with no luck. Well at least I did resave under a new slot about 3 hours earlier. Kinda bites to loose a whole nights playing, but I guess that will teach my to cheat. blush

Only reason I did it was because I accidentally opened the door in the giants room (I walked into it and my scout automatically picked it on the spot and the giant attacked.)

As much as I don't like the answer, thanks for letting me know before I wasted any more time.

Well, I think you could do it by editind the scripts!

1. Save your game

2. Write a new line somewhere into the script file of the current area you're in (somewhere between the lines "code =" and "break;" of a talking node you haven't been through yet):

alter_stat(x,-y);

(note the ";" - it is vital!)

x = the number of a stat (i think it is written somewhere on the boards) and

y = the number of skillpoints you want to decrease (if you want to increase them just lose the "-") - i think this should also make the cost for the skill decrease.

3. If you have any more question (don't know what i'm talking about, i didn't write this clear enough etc.) just ask

ps: the script file for the zone must be the one with "dlg" at the end of the name!
