Fledgling Fyora Mike Lemmer
I'm playing Avernum 1 again, and I'm wondering: can the Assassination ability proc on bow attacks?
Hatchling Cockatrice Alorael at Large
No. —Alorael, who isn't sure what "proc" means. He assumes it has something to do with activating, applying, or otherwise being relevant to ranged attacks. And the answer is no.
Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
It's short for "procedure", originates as MUDspeak, and essentially means "to produce an effect".
Hatchling Cockatrice Mea Tulpa
I thought it was short for "process."
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
assassinate with bow/thrown weap? nice idea for next avernum.
Ineffable Wingbolt Rent-an-Ihrno
I've always been pro assassination for ranged weapons (not magic). It would make them significantly more powerful, and it doesn't really make sense to me why you would be able to assassinate someone using a sword, but not using a javelin? But then, it also doesn't make that much sense that you "assassinate" someone in an open battle, and that the assassinated doesn't die instantly but only takes more damage than from a normal attack. It's like a sneak attack in D&D, but without the having to sneak up on someone!
Hatchling Cockatrice Mea Tulpa
What, they don't call it backstabbing anymore? Lame.
Kyshakk Koan Abhishek
cant we have seprate skill for assasination. warrior fights with melee/pole +blade master +lethal blow +strength i think there must b an equivalent skill to lethal blow which does not always work

Since it is only rarely either literally or metaphorically an attack in the back, it makes sense. —Alorael, who finds it amusing that sniping is apparently not assassination in Avernum. No, the classy killers do it up close and personal. With their halberds.
Ineffable Wingbolt Rent-an-Ihrno
How about a skill that only takes effect while you're in a particular state of mind? Like +50% dmg vs pedestrians while on Skribbane?
Kyshakk Koan Sss-Chah
sharpshooter is basically blademaster for bows (tongue twister), so it would actually make a lot of sense skill-wise to have an assassination equivalent, too. i'm not even going to bother mentioning the practical applications right now.
