I just finished the whole Basalt Fortress quest, and now I'm going to Spire Fortress, but I can't get there because I killed the Portal Mage, seeing if he had any good equipment. My game is at a unsolvable break, because of a Fine Robe and 20 gold.

I'm playing a game that involves killing everyone once their purpose is served and none of the arch-magi drop robes of the magi. Hell, even the idiot in the honeycomb does, but not X, Solberg, Rone, etc.

It was a pointless experiment, and the top half of the fort wasn't mad at me, and I figured their were no reprocusions.

As you know, there is no steamlined way to make the mage come back to life. I suggest just dabbling with the scripts to make the mage reappear when you enter the area.

Read the scripts for Fort Avernum. Somewhere there should be a section about allowing you now to go to Fort Spire. There will be a flag that has to be set to let the portal now give you Fort Spire.

 

Or you could start over again and wait a little longer to kill him.

The reason 'justlikeme' didn't work is because the Reset Hotility cheat is 'pleaselikeme'

That's what I meant. It makes towns non-hostile, it dosen't bring back dead people.

This is a new one on me. This is the only way I know of in the newest versions to make the game unwinnable. Part of me wants to patch the game to fix it. Part of me doesn't.

Don't bother. Apparentally, there is a way to change the "things done" flag, so there's no need to make a patch.

Leave it this way. There should be some way to discourage random acts of violence for almost no experience and treasure.

 

It might teach people to read the instructions and the part about not kill people until there usefulness is totally over.

The obvious solution is to make attacking anyone under Fort Avernum cause explosion magical decompression and kill everyone including the party. Then you'll always have access to the mage.

Seconded. I think the best one was the barrier in the northern islands in A1 that talked about how you were dying but you just didn't care.

That one was so annoying. After running into it a couple of dozen times I cracked and asked for help. Amazing read the first time though. And we musn't forget the sign in the middle of the Swamp in E/A3. Warning: Swamp.

My favorite is on the Isle of Bigail, when you have your first encounter with the giant roaches. A dialogue box pops up describing the giant cockroaches intent on eating you, and the only option in the dialogue box is "How disgusting."

The same thing appears in [the BoA scenario] Valley of the Dying Things, except with mobile fungi instead of cockroaches.

Mobile fungi are worse. And the roach soldier guys are... interesting.

 

Just make all important NPCs immobile with max DEX. This makes them pretty unkillable and it adds the humerous effect of them effortlessly dodging your every attack while carrying on a conversation with you.
