  1. Thankee! Aside from extra control and access to more unit types, what do the shaping skills grant?
  2. Thankee! I tried the 3 main types and have preferred my Dragonsaurs due to their fast speed, spammable breath weapons, doubly upgradable HP, and innate Haste. Thads (which are effectively ninjas) were handy for more HP and the occasional stun. I didn't like Artilas for their frailty. On Veteran, boosting summon HP has been especially useful just to ensure my minions live through turn 2 or 3 for them.
  3. I boosted Mechanics and Leadership to 6, requiring all of my 30 skill points. I struggled far less and was able to enjoy a faster-paced game. For shaping skills, I've liked dinos for being fast with innate haste and spammable breath weapons. What are the main negatives and positives of each makable creature type? Thankee!
  4. I realized this is how the overworld travel system worked. I still prefer the, "Tag an overworld location to be able to permanently fast travel there on the overworld," but I've used the current system to my advantage. Thankee!
  5. Greetings, all! I'm still playing on Veteran difficulty and I've found this game to be unpleasantly random. Sometimes, enemies would go first and decimate my party, or I'd attack and miss or hit but not stun foes or deal too little damage to kill it. Regardless, I'm now finally a Shaper4 (not Shaper3 as I originally mentioned) - alleluia! - and seek advice on how best to proceed. I still have all my skill points and living tools. I've only spent 200G total to open a door to the Bless spell which I've barely used since it cost essence ('green mana' - the mana type that actually counted) and I've been patiently making progress in the game. In games like this, I've felt encouraged to invest in utility abilities - the Unlock spell, speaking/Leadership, etc. I also know that I'm expecting to kill stuff - largely with minions - since this is a combat-heavy video game where stealth has been unreliable. (I've experienced plenty of negative and positive randomness so far and I wish the game were far less random in ways that benefited me!) Thus, considering this and perhaps more, what do you most advise I do with my skill points? What about cash purchases? Nothing I've found so far has especially appealed to me. I have a spammable Firebolt spell and minions. Thankee!
  6. Thankee! This was poorly explained and the Charm effect still seems like a bug. Other conditions like fear are more logical to me. Regardless, leveling to 3 made my Firesaurs easier to control.
  7. Greetings, all! Sometimes in battle, units (friendly and enemy) become Terrified and run around. Odd, but manageable. Stranger and less pleasant is when my units spontaneously become Charmed for no obvious reason and start attacking my side. Often, this has happened after all enemies are dead! This felt like a bug regardless of its intent and I believe it should be fixed. (I play on Veteran difficulty and I'm new to the game.) Thankee!
  8. Greetings, all! I've been enjoying my game so far with the biggest detractor so far being the overworld map. I assumed it was like in many games, where once I unlocked access to a region/map location I could travel there whenever I was on the map instead of needing to walk through every map every time. I assumed that if we were meant to be prevented from warping to an area, scripted events would prevent us from going to that map or through that map node. On a similar note, I want to be able to access the overworld if my main character is on a blue travel spot, regardless of where my creations are. Finally, for villages, let us simply open the world map at any time out of combat and fast travel. Note that I only started playing tonight. Pweath avoid spoilers. This is a request to the dev(s) to fix this for a near-term release so we may enjoy the game more. Thankee and alleluia!
  9. Greetings, all! I beat Avernum 1's remake on Torment, meaning I have some experience with Spiderweb's games. I'm new to the Geneforge series: I read a Geneforge review in PC Gamer many years ago but only bought Geneforge 1 as part of the Kickstarter. I started as a Shaper so I can be a Pokemon master, because in this universe, Shapers are gods! And I've normally liked playing mages in general. I'm level 2 and barely explored the island. I've not spent any points because I wasn't sure what stuff was most important, nor how often I should expect to get points. What newbie advice do you have for me and fellow newbs? Thankee!
  10. Normally this is so, but I didn't experience this; hence, the request.
  11. Greetings, all! If Steam is necessary for Geneforge 1 to run, automatically launch the Steam client when running Geneforge Mutagen.exe. Thankee! (I only discovered this when running the EXE with Steam closed since certain Steam-downloaded games don't require Steam to be running if their game EXEs are run directly.) Thankee!
  12. "Emperor Hawthorne, you are guilty of treason! By assuming the office of emperor, you pledged your loyalty to your people, but your corruption and your madness made you desert your love of your people for the love of yourself! "In the name of Avernum, and all that you are not, I wish I could charge you with a century of torment for every life that you have ruined, but that judgment is not mine to give. Your madness shall never understand the mercy of the judgment I pronounce upon you, upon Avernum, and upon the world above. I hereby sentence you to die- not by my hand, but by the hand of the one I worship. "Emperor Hawthorne, your time has come!" And so the madman fell, cackling and oblivious to the Divine Retribution spell cast upon him. His assailants, dressed in bright colors, hustled to the portal to avoid the remaining guards. Anywhere was better than here. Each took a deep breath, their last of the ornate and fresh air, and stepped through. And so they returned to Avernum, through the door that took them to the Royal Spire. Erika was pleased to usher them back. They lived with the tremendous victory that they, with the help of Avernum, had overthrown the tormentous chains of their oppressors and the figurehead which symbolized and epitomized their hate. The people of Avernum would hail them as heroes, even if King Micah may die of shock once he heard the news. So they headed quickly back to Erika's Tower. She greeted them with the warmest welcome she had ever given them, and the warmest welcome they had received since entering Avernum. Beyond the pleasantries and the wonderful news of Emperor Hawthorne's death, Erika's face quickly turned from joy and admiration to cunning and contemplation. "This is only the beginning," Erika said. "The Empire will never let this assault go unanswered. Soon, they will come here. Soon, there will be war." Her eyes narrowed at her audience. Erika knew that they knew, and they knew that Erika knew that everything that had led up to this point had been for something, even if those who heard about it never understood it, nor appreciated it. As the four heroes went to sleep in Erika's guest room, dreaming victorious dreams, they remembered the feelings of dread and loneliness that filled them when they entered Avernum, and the feelings of urgency and uncertainty upon entering the Royal Spire. Day after day of slaughter and toil had proven to them that there was enough wealth and power in all of Avernum- and boy, how they had searched!- to challenge the world above. Now, they could rest in reward from every ache and every trial... for a little while. And then, they knew in the back of their minds, much of the surface world would have to die as well for tyranny to end and freedom to reign. But that would be another day. Today, the torment had been worth it. (And thus ends my tale of Avernum: Escape from the Pit, where Emperor Hawthorne died to a Smite/Divine Retribution combo. And yes, I played on Torment, but only the final leg leading up to the Royal Spire, as well as all of the Royal Spire. I played the rest of the game on Hard. And Torment is aptly named. My party had 2 'Paladins' (dual wielding Fighters with 8 Priest Spells for Mass Healing), a Cleric, and a Wizard. For the game's last 20% or so, Adrenaline Rush for extra AP was downright necessary. I'm glad I got it for everyone! Many thanks to: -Slartifer for his build guide. I'd be screwed otherwise! -Whoever wrote the guide for the Level 3 Spellbook Locations. That helped! -Whoever wrote the guide for how many of which items I should hold onto. Yay! -Mike Middleton and Silver Harloe for their game maps. Woohoo! -Denizens of Spiderweb's boards for answering misc. questions. Danke, everyone!)
  13. I returned to Aydin then went back to the tapestry in the Black Spire. That worked. And now Hawthorne is dead by my hand! (Too bad I had to turn down the difficulty to Normal from Torment.)
  14. Greetings, all! I'm near the end of the game. I have all 4 password parts and all 5 brooches. I intend to kill Hawthorne, but talking to Erika now that I have these things doesn't give me new dialog options for progressing the assassination plot. It may be because I need a 2-part ritual from Aydin of the Hidden Tower. I visited him and was told about the ritual. I also returned Khoth's scroll to him. Here are my questionable spots. -I found the Black Spire, but can't get past the pulley system. What do I dos? -Where should I go regarding the fungus Aydin mentioned, and what's there? -I have the Silver Key and the Ankh password, but how do I get into Meena's chamber for the Silver Circlet? EDIT: I went in through the secret along the east wall. -What else should I know about finishing this way?
  15. Greetings! I've entered the Crypt of Drath. I cleared the first floor as much as I could and fell into the hole. I cleared the floor below that as much as I could, but I can't enter the northwest pentagram room, the southeast area with 2 switches, nor access the boat. Every portcullus is shut, and I know of no way to open them. I have the Stone Key, but that hasn't helped yet. I lack Dispel Barrier L3, meaning I can't get rid of the barriers on B1. What must I do to proceed?
  16. Greetings, all! I'm still playing through Avernum: Escape from the Pit for m' first time. It's big. It's really big. It feels about as big as Might and Magic: World of Xeen. (And it makes me miss my bedtime by hours, meaning those old Avernum ads on PvPOnline.com were true!) But how many of the original Avernum games does Escape from the Pit cover? If it isn't all of them, what are the plans to remake the remaining Avernum games? PS: The Avernum: Escape from the Pit trailer is featured in the Forbes article about Project: Eternity on page 3. http://www.forbes.com/sites/danielnyegri...ne-kickstarter/
  17. If you get lucky or know what you're doing, you can sneak into the Stagnant Tunnels and immediately go right for the Orb. No fighting involved.
  18. Greetings! If I equip a bow that affects my hit chance, does that affect my hit chance with melee weapons? Does my hit chance from items affect my hit chance from spells?
  19. The Stagnant Tunnels Spellbooks are mostly for the less important spells and the secondary casters. Icy Rain L2, Haste L2, and a change of tactics (keeping my Wizard in back and having him flee the map when I was about to wipe) let me progress.
  20. (|=^) I've been investing in Arcane Lore. I'm 1 level short of getting 12 AL. (I have 8 points and one Sage Lore.)
  21. Greetings, all! This is my first time through Avernum on PC. I'm on Hard. Because it felt like the right difficulty at the start. The Points 1: Can I make my Wizard the lead character, enter combat mode, cast Blink to get beyond a barrier, then end combat to force my party to regroup? 2: Since I can't kill bosses and boss packs, how should I get the experience, items, and training to do so? (I missed the opportunity to farm the Neph Fort back entrance fight.) 3: I've already agreed to help Kyass evict Cenac. How do I get into the tower where he is? Background My group (Dual Wield 'Paladin' Tank/Dual Wield Fighter DPS/Cleric/Wizard) is L12 going on 13. In general, I followed Slartibus's Guide for character building. And I refuse to cheat! Things were going well until about L10 when area bosses just farmed me. I'm trying to save money by avoiding buying spells I can get from the Stagnant Tunnels. To do that, I seemingly need to get a L2 Dispel Barrier, but that's expensive. (I do have the Orb. Found it by accident. Woo!) To save money, I checked on the Arenea fight where I can get L1 Dispel Barrier as a reward. My party died before it got a turn. I tried going through Erika's Tower, but died when I had to enter the pen near the start. I can't get Solberg back to the Magi Tower because that means beating a demon lord, which implies I need Demonslayer, but at least one of its parts is guarded by a pack of boss demons at the Neraphim Fort. My group has plenty of money (about 12K with Negotiator x4), but nowhere I'm confident spending it on. I've avoided buying weapon and armor upgrades, since I find similar gear anyway. I already bought 2 ranks of Mass Heal. I'm seriously considering getting 2 ranks of Ward of Thoughts to avoid being dazed by the spiders. How helpful is rank 2 Ward of Thoughts? What else should I get?
  22. If I learn a spell from a spellbook (like Haste), does that affect what I get from the Stagnant Tunnels Spellbooks?
  23. Greetings, all! I've been avoiding reading spellbooks until I learn the level 2 versions of the spells I want. Must I do this to save the most money? Can I instead read a book then buy 2 levels of that spell? Will it cost the same amount of coins? (I'm on the PC version.)
  24. Thanks! I arrived at Fort Avernum with 1 HP and no MP. I didn't auto-rest. Was curious how.
