As I was playing the spiderweb games (Particularly Geneforge 1 and Avernum: EftP), A thought kept growing in my mind regarding what a cool direction would be for Jeff to take for the next series when the Avadon series is eventually done. Geneforge 1 and Avernum: EftP both had absolutely massive and hostile worlds that it was your sole objective simply to escape. And as I was playing, I suddenly got the thought into my head: "Hey, what if somebody built a survival-horror-esque strategy game using the Geneforge and Avadon style of movement and combat?" I imagined a zombie apocalypse game with Geneforge's general game engine, taking a group of ragtag survivors exploring an abandoned and dead world full of buildings and houses and underground tunnels, all overrun with hostile monstrosities. The regularly-seen elements in the Spiderweb Games (the ability to sneak past battles, a system of picking locks, the incentive to explore the world, and non-linear gameplay) would all lend itself PERFECTLY to a zombie apocalypse or other survival horror game type. The core gameplay elements and appeal wouldn't even be changed, really, it would just be the aesthetic and setting that would be different. There would be no alienating the core loyal fanbase, just a light survival horror twist Sadly, I'm well aware of the unfortunate fact that something like this probably will never, ever, EVER happen. Shame, because I honestly feel it would work wonderfully, and we already know that Jeff can effectively spin a compelling tale of the downfall of a society revealed through journals and documents (Geneforge 1). The reason why I say this will never happen is because it would likely demand a crapton of new artwork that could potentially be difficult to recycle for other, later spiderweb games. Oh well, it was fun to imagine.

Please Jeff-Don't kill my only exploits
RaustBlackDragon replied to NamelessOne's topic in Avadon Series
I've never played at anything lower than torment, and I've beaten Avernum EftP (with builds that would make a minmaxer cry) and the first three Geneforges so far. I'm hoping that dexterity is going to be fixed, personally, though it's not like I found myself forced to go all out in dex for any of my characters. Has there been any confirmation of dexterity getting rebalanced? -

Geneforge Let's Play!

Yeah, I went Shaper, but I managed to avoid being racist to creations by going all "I'M GOING TO KILL YOU MANIACS!" towards Litalia in the beginning of the game (for honestly quite understandable reasons) to get some pro-shaper points and then emphasizing my advocacy of societal order, while avoiding any questions about servile rights. -
Geneforge Let's Play!

That's a tough decision. I think the only of those 3 games in which canister overuse doesn't net you a worse ending is G2 if you don't go loyalist. An interesting choice would be to go for a Barzite canister addict, I don't believe any LP exists that goes that route. However, in G2 Canisters and training have this really glitchy relationship where you need to use the canisters last or they take away a potential training level, so you'd wind up passing up on canisters and then going on a mad canister hunt, which hardly fits the addict role... Also there's the issue that barzites are the most unlikable power-crazy maniacs I've ever seen, and you seem to base the faction you pick on what you feel is right (much like what I do). I suppose you could use the logic I've seen done for G3 and G4, Shaper in the former, Rebel (and thus Canister addict) in the latter, the logic being "Whatever my player character's faults, I won't add 'traitor' to that list". Honestly, tricky decision, and I'm interested to see what you decide -

Hey man, just thought I'd say that I think your LP is the best one of the game on youtube from the ones I've seen. I love the voices you do and your commentary about the little things you notice, like how the shapers are actually properly cautious with their work compared to nearly every other magical group in gaming. Also, voicing that girl poking the Ornk and the Ornk "moo"ing instead of reading the description of it just made my friggin' day when I saw it. Not sure if you've answered this, but what's your plan for canisters going forward? Do you plan on doing minimum canisters, or all-out? -
What happened to the Awakened?
RaustBlackDragon replied to RaustBlackDragon's topic in Geneforge Series - Originals
What a shame. What a crying shame. They were wiped out, leaving only the completely insane takers to take up the mantle for servile rights. That makes me very sad. -
Just wondering about their conspicuous absence in the later games. Was it ever explained what happened to them? Did they get wiped out, or was their final plan one that didn't really concern itself with expansion, so we never see them?

What would Yahtzee think of Spidersoft?

Your music that you listen to-All Genres Accepted

Oh boy do I have something for you! My favorite band is called Van Canto, and they're an A Capella Power Metal band. Yes, you heard that right, they do the guitar sounds with their mouths, and they only have a drummer because the beatboxers they auditioned for all passed out halfway through the third song on their first album. And they're more than just a gimmick, they've got really awesome songs too, like "Speed of Light", and "Lost Forever", and "If I Die In Battle". They also do a lot of covers of other metal bands' songs, including Nightwish's "Wishmaster" and Metallica's "Battery" and "Master of Puppets". Check them out, I think you might like what you hear -
I suddenly got to wondering what Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw would think about the spiderweb software games, particularly Geneforge and Avernum. Call me crazy, but I have a sneaking feeling he'd like it...

Geneforge Let's Play!
RaustBlackDragon replied to Chessrook44's topic in Geneforge Series - Originals
Oh by the way, you helped my decision to play the games again as a Guardian instead of a Shaper. The idea of being the powerful leader of a good army rather than the weak leader of a powerful army really appealed to me, and it'll help me adjust to my intentions of playing as a sorceress when I finally reach G5. -
Geneforge Let's Play!

My personal policy for who to side with is to pick the side that is the nicest to creations without also having as part of their list of plans "overthrow shapers". -
So Dear Reader......What class will you use?
RaustBlackDragon replied to Death Knight's topic in Avadon Series
Wait a second, is this normal? One stat is well known to be completely broken and it isn't fixed between games? I was almost POSITIVE that Avadon 2 would rebalance the stats... -

Hey, loving the series so far! Are you planning on playing the next ones too? If so, once the awakened faction vanishes for 3 and 4, which side do you plan on taking? -
Sorry for the thread necro, but just wanted to add my two cents again: There is, at bare minimum, one incredibly good thing to be said about the shapers: They are by far the most responsible group I have ever seen in all of video gaming, possibly in all of fiction. Geneforge 1 makes this exceptionally clear. Shapers know full well the risks of what they do, and they take all, I repeat, all of the necessary precautions to avoid massive catastrophic horrors being unleashed upon the world. It is a miraculous art that they wield, and they wield it with a care, caution and responsibility that is pretty much without peer. The rebels, on the other hand, though they certainly have lofty ideals, wield their power with no such caution at all. If they were all a bunch of hippie liberals peaching pacifism and kindness, then we might have some semblance of an argument here, but they assuredly are nothing of the kind. It became obvious to me as early as Geneforge 2 that if the rebels (particularly the drakons) were ever to succeed in overthrowing the shapers, they would bring about a reign of tyranny so atrociously hypocritical and horrible that it disgusts me endlessly, and they wouldn't even have the shapers' incredible caution with the art of shaping. In short, if the shapers were ever to be violently overthrown, I'm quite certain that would be the worst concievable outcome ever for the entire Geneforge universe. As a result, my general policy has been to side with the most creation-friendly faction available that does not have, on its list of goals, "overthrow shapers". This has been the awakened when available, and the shapers at all other times so far.
-
So I'm trying to be a sort of double/triple/quadruple/etc agent, but I'm worried about shaper association getting too severe and being found out as a traitor. How far can my reputation lean before it starts influencing the people I talk to? Can anybody well-versed in this spare some time to explain it to me?

Soundtracking Spiderweb: Which game?
RaustBlackDragon replied to RaustBlackDragon's topic in General
I don't have Exile, sadly -
Beyond the two points for intelligence, does anybody ever spend those points your creations get when they level up? I personally don't unless it's a "guest" character, since otherwise it subtracts from my essence, and this only gets worse when the creations get stronger. But has anybody actually found it worthwhile to do this?
-
I'm thinking of starting a little side-project called "Soundtracking Spiderweb", where I create music for the normally musicless spiderweb software games. I'm an amateur composer, and here is a collection of most of my work: http://raustblackdragon.newgrounds.com/audio/ So I'm just curious if anybody has a preference for which game I should start with for this project?
