ok, I'm confused..... (not hard)

I tried searching the forum but only found this thread relevant - hence bringing it back up....

I've been all around the tower of the magi, gone back to the witch and spoken to her but there is no option to say I didn't find anything there.....

what did I miss to get the second location to check?
