A:EftP - Flaming negative critique
ShieTar replied to lukematt's topic in Avernum Trilogy (2011-2018 remake versions)
@Agnates: I didn't miss those titles, I did play at least both Dragon Ages, both NWNs, and both Drakensangs. Also two parts of Knights of the Old Republic. And Arcanum, but I think that was at least a full decade ago? And while I enjoyed playing all of those games, none of them did feel like a real turn-based game. But personally I think there is a little difference between the "find some followers" system and a real party based RPG, and of the above only NWN2-SoZ gave you the option to fully create your own party as you wanted it. And the other two parts of NWN2 with some mods, but that just made them trivially easy. And while the NWNs at least have a strategic component in character planing, where most others were mostly balanced towards "play what you want", neither of those titles had anything resembling tactical battles. Of course you CAN pause and order in these games. But that only gets them a little closer to turn-based, but not to strategic. You do not know beforehand if it will take two or three attacks to finish off that one mage, so you end up just focusing everybodys attack on him. And then you end the pause, and like Kreador said, everybody starts acting at once and messing up your planing. And since there is a realtime system beneath, you often have to wait for the already started round of attacks to play through before your given commands will even be executed. The only exception to this I know are the infinity engine games, which had a "Pause each turn" option. Don't get me wrong though, I wouldn't mind a nice Sci-Fi game from Jeff either. Or a even something completely different, like a gunpowder area setting. But the last thing I think when looking at one of his existing titles is "Oh no, not annother one of those". -

Sure, but why can't you level up before you buy either the Bauble or the Spell? Because after leveling, you can check your tool use value again. And personally I always level as soon as I can, because I am not aware of any reason not to. -

Because Wizardry 8 came in 2001, Icewind Dale 2 came 2002, Temple of Elemental Evil cam 2003, and since then there have been no strategic party based RPG released by any major company (for the PC). And as much as I like the concept of independant development, in my experience a large part of independant titles come with downright unplayable user interfaces and rule concepts. To my current knowledge, the Spiderweb games have been the only relevant contribution to the sub-genre over the last decade. But I am always ready to change my mind, so if you could point out some enjoyable independant party based RPGs of the last decade, no matter how played out the scenario, I would be quiet thankfull indeed. -
The murky graphics
ShieTar replied to Pemptus's topic in Avernum Trilogy (2011-2018 remake versions)
Well, I am rather happy with how the game plays, but I only tried going with my screens natural resolution (2560x1600) for about 20 seconds. Due to the excessive eye-squintiness of that experience, I switched to 1280x800, and with that sizing it is quite easy to make out interactive objects and on-ground items. Since that resolution is still nice to look at and giving a decent overview, I don't really have any complaints. -

I am a little confused about the perceived need to do this. Avernums system of stats is rather trivial, why would you need to know how high any of your magic/misc skills are, before you can decide which stat to raise? Or are you refusing to level up for an extended period of time, for some reason? -
Sooo, I just did some more testing, and at least in my version of the game (Windows/Steam), the cost of the second training is NOT twice that of the first training. Training twice just comes at a price of "x+x", not "x+2x". I guess you assumed that the prices would double based on an older version of the game, or maybe even on of the older Avernum games?

No, I just checked it again. Carol shows the same 140 coins for the Minor Heal for each character I talk to her with. They either can not train it due to their lack of Priest Skill, or they can train it from their free L1 Spell to the L2 Spell for exactly this 140 coins. Though I then found Toddric myself, who will now train me for a mere 120 coins in the same conditions. So apparently House of S does have the cheapest trainer posted in the original text, there is only this little confusion about the "2nd level" for free spells.

Ooh, Interesting. I now tried your 150% DPI scaling just as a check, and it turns out you are absolutely right, thats just broken. I don't get the UI/Control panel onto the screen either, just like you. Also in 150%, like in your screenshots, the taskbar insists on showing up even in fullscreen mode. I find that extremely strange, because no such thing has ever happened to me with 125% DPI scaling that I run as standard, and I play loads of oldies and indies. So then I went and set the DPI scaling to a custom 160%. And what do you know? Absolutely no problem either. Seems like it is only the 150% exactly that is broken. So I would suggest you try also a custom one that is a bit different from 150%, so you do not have to worry about such things in the future ;-)

Some spells can be trained cheaper then proposed in the original post: Carol in Fort Duvno will train Minor Heal for 140 Curing for 210 Protection for 280 Miles in Formello will train Bolt of Fire for 160 Call Beast for 240 Cloak of Curses for 320 Daze for 320 Throndell in the Tower of Mages will train Smite for 320 Ward of Thoughts for 640 (I will add more finds, as I play through)

@Lilith: Are you realy sure about this limitation? I mean, the stat descriptions for Str and Dex clearly says that they raise Melee and Range accuracy, respectively. And there even are two different traits. "Surehand" and "Deadeye" I think? Do you mean that if I took both traits I would get 10% accuracy on every attack, instead of 5%?

I was really confused when I read this. Because my Version of Win7 has so far never scaled any game graphics just because I run it at high DPI, only fonts (and desktop icons). So I tried your workaround to see if there is a difference, and for me, there isn't. With or without your option, and even if I switch to 100% DPI setting, Avernum EftP always looks 100% the same, down to the last pixel.

A-EftP - On Steam for $7.99
ShieTar replied to dave s's topic in Avernum Trilogy (2011-2018 remake versions)
I assume the people behind Steam do take some freedoms at pricing the software on Steam though. I did buy this game via Steam, but I paid 7.99€ not 7.99$.
