Ah, thank you. So he was actually in the Murkhala mines. From the in-game text I somehow expected to find him in the region around the mines, on the overland map.
-
I havn't found it, despite walking all over the Murkhala region several times. Can somebody give me a hint where I need to look?

Well, I checked it with the Steam/Windows Version yesterday - Flawless shot and Blinding Shot both use Dex + Bows Skill, but are completely unaffected by whatever ranged weapon you equip. So with 40 Dex and 20 Bows Skill, you get 67D5 (201 average) damage out of Flawless shot and 67D6 (235 average) Damage from Blinding Shot. Which of course is still less than you get out of two normal attacks with the first expidition bow, which should end up at 2*85D3 = 340 average Damage. So Adrenaline Rush remains the best option to deal damage. Thats as long as the tooltips are accurate. Never tested that.
-
20 to 60 would seem strange, it should be 20 to 100. Which Version of the Game are you playing? In any way, Flawless Shot works strangely. It takes the number of Damage Dice for your Bows Skill (Never Thrown Weapons), adds your Dexterity and annother 7, and then does this number of d5 in Damage. Since Bows are only d3 (but usually +10 or +20, and with some damage-dice of their own) this skill can start doing a lot of damage at very high Dex/Bows Values, but for the early game and thrown weapons users, it is indeed very useless. And when you finaly have a lot of dice in this skill, you also have access to better battle disciplines, so it remains forever useless.

AEFTP : Do you have a Mac/Win/iPad ?
ShieTar replied to BMA's topic in Avernum Trilogy (2011-2018 Remastered Versions)
And I would play it on Android, if it existed for Android. Avadon is clearly the best game, for my style, available on it. Even if everything is a little tiny on my 7''. -
That is probably more of a problem for the Microsoft Support Hotline, not so much for this forum. Or you try to locate the crash report files, and try to figure out the problem for yourself. At the very least, you might want to post it into the Spiderweb Tech Support forum thread instead of the game discussion thread. Personally, the game never crashed for me in my >80 hours of play-through.

A:EftP - Need help in Erika's tower
ShieTar replied to Mad Genius's topic in Avernum Trilogy (2011-2018 Remastered Versions)
That situation actually made me laugh when I figure it out. It is a variation of an old riddle, where one of them would have said "The left is safe" telling the truth, and the other would have said "The right is safe" telling a lie, and then you would have had to ask a more complex question to rat out the truth. But in this case, one tells you the truth about "The left is dangerous", the other tells you a lie about "The right is safe". One tells the truth, one lies, and still both seem to agree. So, it is a riddle, a rather clever one at that, and you have to choose not to choose. -

If you just plunder all towns in the north-east, including both Dranlon and Draco, you get the shovels (and everything for the follow-up quests) wiothout any fight. -
Question about wands and scrolls
ShieTar replied to SapientCrow's topic in Avernum Trilogy (2011-2018 Remastered Versions)
Wands and scrolls only use 3 AP? No there is a relevant information that I did not know about. That actually makes them significantly better than I thought so far. -
Gazers/Eyebeasts etc and lightning

Do your casters already have lightning spray at level 3? That might add the DoT. -
What is wrong with summons?
ShieTar replied to SapientCrow's topic in Avernum Trilogy (2011-2018 Remastered Versions)
Ok, just did a little testing. My theories stated above are correct, taking the trait 3 times will increase the summons chances to hit and to evade by 30%(=3x10%) each. At the same time, Hard mode will decrease those values for you and your summons by 25% and torment mode will decrease each by 50%. So in torment the summon with 3 traits is still weaker than in normal without traits. But hey, so is your player. Also, the general evade rates of summons near the endgame seem to be only slightly lower than those of a DEX character, definitly worlds above a STR or INT character. On Normal Difficulty this means that with 3 traits they have a very good, often 95%, chance to dodge attacks from normal enemies. They also seem to have 90% armor (Vengeful shade summoned by a lvl 30 character), so they do survive for a good time. Originally Posted By: meAzuma Summoned slimes are immune to acid damage too. To my recollection this has not been attempted by anybody within this thread yet. In short, I have to refuse your suggestion of giving up my current opinion solely due to the fact that it is based on incomplete data. If I did that in general, I would only be left with opinions on topics from my immediate field of work, which would surely be of little interest to the vast majority of people in this forum. Mmh, well, as I understand it 5 levels should mean +25% hit and evade chance per pick, so +75% hit and evade with three picks. Basically that should make your summons always (=95%) hit and always evade at normal difficulty. Maybe I find some time to test and proof it this weekend. -

What is wrong with summons?

Originally Posted By: xuerebx I'm more concerned that they never hit anything. Useless, except for soaking up damage for one round or two (then they die). The thing you are missing is the fact that there is a trait that you can take 3 times, which will increase the summons level by 2 each time. The way summon/monster level work (as far as I understand it), is that 6 level will give them 30% hit and evade chances, on top of some extra-HP. On normal this is sufficient to push them from useless to usefull. On torment probably not. That is assuming that you will use a summon-spell appropriate to your level, so arcane or divine summon quickly enough, and not continue to use the lvl 2 critter summon with a lvl 25 party. Of course, you still need to summon them close to the enemy, as stated above, so having a summoner mage that hangs back while the Frontline Fighter storms into the enemy army does not usually work. Having 4 Mages hiding behind their summons works just great though. -

Maybe more will need to be done. Maybe the pressing concerns then won't be the pressing concerns now. Let me turn to utilitiarian ethics. It doesn't matter that equality has come a long way. It doesn't matter that things are probably improving. What matters is what can be done, right now, to improve things most, and most quickly. We should identify those things and do them; anything else is irrelevant. Of course I agree to the middle part of that sentence, "do what can be done". That is almost trivialy true. What is not true, in a rather dangerous way, is the rest of your statement, the "it doesn't matter if things are improving" part. Let me compare shaping society to raising a child for a moment. When you try to raise your child to become a good person, you will do three things: You punish bad behaviour, you suggest and reward good behaviour, and you make sure that the child always fully understands the correlation between its actions and your response. The last part may sound like an afterthought, but it actually the most important part of it. Punishments that are not understood lead to psychoses, rewards that are not understood lead to addictions. The same things need to be done when you attempt to improve the behaviour of a society. You make active discriminations illegal and punish the offenders. That one is trivial enough. But it is often, and in our case of the professors, not enough. So what now, you go and punish those that profit from the remaining inequity? They have not caused the inequity, and thus you deal out random punishment. That will not improve their behaviour by any means, as they have experienced that they will not profit from correct behaviour. It can also send a horrible signal to the ones that will profit from the counter-action. Whoever is helped by an enforcement of equity might either end up assuming that they would have achieved less without the help of the enforcement, or assuming that the ones doing the enforcement are not taking her serious. Neither will help the profiteer to consider herself as an equal. Rewarding the progress of society on the other hand could be as easy as just admitting openly and repeatedly that such progress exists. Let men be proud of being part of the best generation yet, instead of being ashamed of being part of a neverending crime. Tell women that not only they don't have to accept discrimination, but they don't have to except it either. Allow them to be surprised and outrage in the face of discrimination, so they can confidently demand a change and refuse to act along. Do not teach them that the world, despite all efforts, remains as unfair as ever, leading them into a fatalism where they will live their whole life declaring that a lot of things are "expected" from them by society. In order to maintain these opinions, let me get back to the point of the low number of female professors. As I said earlier, there was a very impressive interview with a number of female professors from germany. And when asked how they got to their position, not a one of them declared that they had needed legal support to fight discrimination. Not one of them, to their credit, declared that she had to work much harder than the men to get to the same position. But almost every single one of them declared that the most important factor of her career was the fact that she found a mentor early on, who would continue to encourage her to follow this path, giving her the confidence she needed to try. I really do believe that if that was all that was needed in these cases, than the same thing can do a lot of good in other fields, on a wider audience. Of course it can not be the first step in the fight against inequality, but it is an immensly important second step, and without it, we will forever keep a lot of leftover victims long after the crimes have stopped.

Game seems way to easy
ShieTar replied to Viper's topic in Avernum Trilogy (2011-2018 Remastered Versions)
Have you switched off "Party always acts in roster order." in the main menu? In my opinion, this option makes the game much easier, with always giving you a full round of actions in advance to any monster. Having the enemy act first before you get any buffs up is a completely different game, specifically once you run into enemies that stun or fear. -
In that case, Oops, sorry for making that assumption. I would go and defend myself by stating that "she" is an acceptable pronoun for a person of unknown (to me) gender, but that won't work since I explicitely said "woman" I guess. So, allow me to change that to : I have to say, I would love to see the original poster of this thread make a comeback into this discussion. Somehow I can't imagine that if he was experiencing the discrimination of women on basis of their way of dressing on a regular basis, or if he even knew about the danger of women in his parts facing the constant threat of aggressive and unwanted sexual advances by men, that the pressing topic on his mind would be "not enough female professors". I would rather assume that this topic wasn't chosen by him as a random example, but that he rather identified it as one of the few remaining points, that he has a personal experience with, where equality hasn't achieved yet. Since the rights of a woman to choose her way of dressing and to choose to work and to choose when and how and with whom to have sex all having been secured by efforts of our parents and grandparents generations in the part of the world and society in which I, and presumably he, live. Better now?

If they decide to wear a suit and tie for a socieal event, thats generally considered cute rather than by any means inappropriate. As a matter of fact, the range of outfits that a woman can get away with a huge number of clothing variations on formal and business meetings, where men are basically only free to choose the color of their suit and tie. But while women are never expected to show a minimum amount of skin, they are of course expected to show a maximum of it a professional events, like work. This part of the rule applies exactly the same way with no differences to men. - Women are also not "expected" to wear the right amount of the right makeup. Less than half of the women I know personally use makeup at all. The only social convention I am aware of is that any noticeable amount of makeup would be considered to be out of place at work. If these occurences are not reported by the media or not recognized by the men in your societey, or if you choose to disbelieve those reportings, than this is indeed a sign of the strong existence of gender roles in your society. I'm serious, that's a privilege issue. Men walk around stealing glances at women's bosoms; if you're a woman, it starts to get really demeaning after a while. (And no, I'm no better about this than any other man. Even so.) At my breasts specifically? Not usually, women tend to rather focus on my shoulders or legs. Where I live women havn't been afraid to express their sexual interests for a few decades now, and aren't usually opposed to men expressing theirs.
