  1. I have two questions. The first is: what approximate level should I be in the Tower of Magi area of Avernum 4? Currently I am level 17/18 and every fight is a tossup whether I am going to get destroyed quickly or manage to push through. I just came from the Cotra area where I was fighting the bug guys and even there I felt kind of underpowered. I felt like every fight could quickly turn against me, and they often did. This leads me into my next question: Is there a resurrection spell? Almost every fight at least one of my guys dies, which means a long walk back to the nearest town, especially if I am in the bug people tunnels and such. It means that for every five minutes of questing I do I spend about 15 traveling to and from town just to res one person. Anyway, if there is a spell that is awesome, how do I get it? If not, any tips for making the trip shorter? Maybe I should be questing elsewhere for my level? Maybe my stats are just borked, not sure. Thanks for the help in advance.
  2. I had this exact same problem, give me five minutes and ill post the fix i found for it. On my tablet now, sorry for the typing. *** I fixed it. You'll need to download the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7352 Launch the 32-bit version, create a new custom database, then a new application fix. Navigate to the affected game executable, select it, and then, on the second page of fixes, look for "ForceDirectDrawEmulation." To make sure the fix stays, right-click the database and select "Install" which will apply the fixes when you launch the game outside the Compatibility Administrator. *** This was taken from the tech support section of these very forums, and it worked perfectly for me. I say this because you may be loathe to trust a random link someone posts to you, so you can easily find it in the tech support forums here if you want the original post.
  3. I might have to, I just don't like to use products other than the one I paid a lot of money for if I can help it, just so I feel like I'm getting the worth out of it ya know?
  4. I did, however when I start the game the overlay doesn't work and it won't record. Also, if I turn Windows 7 to 16-bit color mode manually Fraps overlay and recording no longer work as well, so I believe it has something to do with the 16-bit thing.
  5. Im trying to use FRAPS to record some Avernum 4 footage but its not working, the overlay wont even show up. Anyone know a workaround or another program that I can use to record? Thanks. P.S. it works fine in Avernum 6, if that matters.
  6. Thanks for all the replies, especially Mr. Vogel. It is sad that it isn't more profitable even as a niche. It seems so perfect. As for wanting small, bite sized games I would agree to a degree, but you must also consider portable gaming platforms like PS Vita and 3DS. Sure, many of those games are drop in/drop out quick games, but they also have very deep experiences. The control scheme on Tablets and Phones is the main issue, but an old school RPG on a tablet controls remarkably well. Well enough that I switched from playing Avadon on my PC to exclusively playing it on my tablet.
  7. I understand that we would need to consider dozens of things regarding the profitability of Spiderweb Software and Android, but I was thinking more "is it feasible for a team of two to make only Android games and make a living", not specifically Spiderweb or anything. As to dave s, yes the iPad has the largest market share with tablets, but that is quickly changing. Mostly due to the Kindle Fire actually. Also, I agree that Steam and PC reach a much bigger audience than Android, but by the same token Shooters reach a much bigger audience than RPGs. Doesn't mean some companies won't choose the RPG route. If there is an exploitable niche, someone will take it and survive there (hopefully). Thanks for the comments so far guys.
  8. I am very interested to know how well Avadon did on Android. I know it probably didn't make as much money as it did on iOS or PC/Mac, and I'm not trying to say "Make all your games Android compatible!" (I would not discourage that though). I also know companies don't really give out financial information when they don't have to. I am just really interested in RPG sales for Android. The reason I am so interested is because, while Android does have higher piracy rates than iOS, I see more dorks (myself included) using Android. That seems like the perfect market for old school RPGs, and yet aside from a few Japanese style RPGs and Avadon, there really isn't much in the way of old school RPG on the platform. I guess, in the end, I'm wondering if anyone (working for Spiderweb or not) has heard anything on the profitability of Avadon on Android. I already read Bottom Feeder, so I know Mr. Vogel said they probably won't be porting to Android again unless they get help, but again I'm just looking for profitability (not compared to other platforms, just in general). Thanks.
  9. Hello all, I know that Avernum: Escape from the Pit is out on Mac and coming to PC soon ( I can not WAIT for this), but my question is: If I buy Avernum 6, will I be jumping into the middle of a characters story? I.E. like playing Mass Effect 2 before 1? Or is it more like an Elder Scrolls game, where it's ahead in the timeline of the world, but it's not like you need to worry about what happened before? So far I've only played Avadon and some of the Geneforge demo so far, but I love the style of Spiderweb games, that old school RPG feel.
  10. Hello all, It turns out I need some help with my skill/ability allocation in this game. You see, I have never been one to even glance at defense abilities in any game. For some reason they just aren't interesting to me, so I always try and maximize damage figuring that if the enemy is dead, I won't need defense. This usually leads to me having a much harder time with games than my friends who tend to pick more defensive abilities. Well that just isn't working out in Avadon. I pumped points deep into all of my characters trees, getting their top tier abilities as quickly as I could. As far as skills, for my Blademaster main I filled him full of strength and Endurance without touching dex or int. My Shadow walker is the same, while my Sorcerer and Shaman are int and end. I have checked out a lot of the stickies and such, and I've realized that I need a lot more dex for my BM and SW for defense. My question is: How should I allocate skill points? For instance on my Blademaster, should I do a rotation? 1 in Str, 1 in dex, 1 in end, then back to strength? I've found that I am having some serious problems pretty early on (as far as I know). Also, having just completed the Shadow Beast questline, should I just reroll and make a new game, or am I close enough to the respec trainer that I can tough it out until I get there? Thanks in advance.
