Its funny cause before I found out about the rest of the games, I tried Avernum 4. When I first heard the music, I thought it was epic. Then when I found out that Nethergate Resurrection was the source of it, I was convinced that that was some of the best music for a video game out there.
  2. I have played many of jeff's games and beaten only about 4, but Ive always found that the intro music to his games were always really really cool, even moreso cooler than the game's themselves. I like the Avadon 1 music the most because in my opinion it sounded the most like what was going on in the game-An epic Game of Thrones type feel. When you complete the game and get to see what happens at the end, the music playing in the background really made it really cool for an ending. Avernum Escape from the Pit had a cool soundtrack too and it fit the background of what was going on-Survival. Geneforge 5 I really didn't like as it just didn't appeal to me that much. Avernum 6 is pretty epic, but Avernum 5 was the best intro music for the Avernum series games. It really sounded like a song I heard before. Probably an intro from metallica. I don't know, maybe its because the games appeal to me, but they definitely got some of the coolest music. Does anyone else find any of the intro music to be really catchy?

I hope the next one will have a better system that similarly discourages such game mechanic abuses. However, I do agree with his reasoning for changing the system to begin with: he WAS indeed putting a ton of high-impact decisions in the hands of a newbie, which is quite stressful, I do agree. I just hope he doesn't go and run with the existing remake system, as it still needs quite a bit of work, particularly in the area of hit rate. I liked the system that the new Avernum was put in. I think that while you had more freedom with the old, with the new its much harder to screw up big time with your char and you can reach skills normally inaccessible now much easier.
  4. Mostly because I was playing gene forge 4 and realized something that jeff will most likely have to do when he changes the Geneforge games over and remakes them. I was looking at Avernum's blade master skill which gives a 3% bonus of melee damage and thought to myself about when he remakes the gene forges. He will probably have to make some direct changes that not everyone will like. Especially regarding the bonuses between classes. It can't be like avernum where everyone gets the same bonuses between each as there are classes. So for quick action as an example, Jeff will likely have to give a higher chance for guardians to get an extra attack. So if agents get 3%, Guardians will get 5% and I don't even know how the shaper is gonna turn out. What will likely happen is melee will be overpowered, ranged weapons will still be good, but compete directly with melee, shaping will no doubt always be good, and magic might take a hit. This is the only way I can see him handling it as gene forge is like avernum but the classes will be thus like a skill tree. People like me won't be affected as he would have to really screw up the gene forge series for me to be annoyed. But I'm sure that the new system will tick quite a few people off. One of the things he does have in his favor though is adding the traits system, imo one of the best additions made via the avernum series.
  5. I actually started playing the shadowwalker class as a melee major class and I gotta say its been fun. Ill admit that I cant use melee in every part of all battles, but thats where having a high dex takes care of for ranged weapons. The way I see it-Melee's main use in the big fights is that you should use your melee in the beginning of the big fight before everyone gets separated. By doing that, you can deal more damage to the mage boss (moritzkri) or other characters and take advantage of melee's benefits early on (like 3 rounds). Once the battle is past the beginning, you can then switch to ranged weapons to take down the weakened foes. This works really good for the shadowwalker because he can poison the enemy and hit with disarming blow right away which will really make a difference. I think the reason Avadon is a little more pro ranged combat is because if Jeff made melee d1-4 then he would just be making another geneforge or avernum where melee 'totally' dominates.
  6. Some of my favorites- "Blessed be Chaos, blessed be the sweet nectar of self indulgence..." -BG2-Drunken Priest of Telos "It run and roar through woods, it consume you.." -Servile at Circle of the Drayk entrance. "Hush little baby, dont say a word, Lucien's gonna show you, The big..black...bird." -Lucien Leblanc-Trials of a Master Thief
  7. I know what you mean and welcome. I for one was completely amazed when I first looked at the games listed and was like-"This is all one guy??!! A few of my friends told me they were convinced he's able to do it because he looks at it with a complete business mindset. Makes sense.
  8. Well, If you want to use polearms and still get 'somewhat' close to the damage of dualwielding, you can raise your points into bow weapons and gymnastics. Along with putting points into poles, every lvl in gymnastics is a 5% chance of getting 2 action points. With 5 points thats a 25% chance, with 10 a 50% chance. It still wont be as good as having dualwielding, but if you are next to an enemy at most of the time, whats the difference. Im going to try this build with poles and hardiness and quick action and after that with whats left, go with blademaster.
  9. Yeah I guess I didnt think of it that way. The problem was that the last game I played and completed was Avadon which I'm just about to finish a 2nd time pretty soon. Avadon was the complete opposite of everything that Avernum 1 is. Avadon forces you to find out the story as it unfolds piece by piece. Avernum, like you all have said is more about the random quests and finding out the world. Its two complete parts of the spectrum and I guess the thing is I somewhat favor Avadon but that doesn't mean Avernum's a bad game either.
  10. Well yeah thats true about which difficulty you play on. You see I play on normal and I feel that all it really is is just large gobs of health added onto make normal enemies tanks. The reason why I don't mind with Avadon doing that, is that in Avadon the entire game is just one big boss battle with everyone having gobs of health and armor. That is much more consistent than everyone dies in 1-2 hits and then fight anything close to a boss and you will spend endless time grinding. Thats probably the biggest reason I didn't finish the game because it was just too much grinding mixed with a not so great story.
  11. Ive reached the point of Avernum Escape from the Pit where I completed about as much as I could of the game without going too insane. My party is all lvl 26 and have had no real trouble with the game as far as I can see. For a game with high expectations I was really thrown off as I thought the game was fun at first. However, once all my characters reached lvl 15, tactics and things that used to work in the game all run out and the game just becomes a slug fest where you strike, strike, heal, strike, repeat. I was really into the game up until most of the tactics that I used to use-Shieldbreaker (to knock enemies away) Leg sweep (weakness curse) just flat out stopped working. From that point on, the only tactics that were usable and that worked were well aimed blow, Mighty blow, Adrenaline rush and Stunning blow. Everything else was just useless. With that said, I thought that the story was overall not the best and that in reality all the game was was just a giant random encounter over and over again. This is not to say that thats not good, but for me, I did not think that was my favorite part of it. There was a lot of trekking back and forth and this was the one thing I did actually liked quite a bit. At first I didn't because I thought it was lame, but then I remembered that this was like the Geneforge 1 and 2 and I grew to like it. The character customization was good but in reality there was no difference between characters. The only real difference is who deals more damage and who is faster or acts faster. The biggest problems with the game is a few things -Lack of a relative story (nonstop encounters) -Slug fest strategy where tactics are pointless (just well aimed blow, might blow and thats it). No other tactics work in mid-late game). -Way too much get item here, and use it over here, next-get item here and use that to get here. I would say that since the game is Jeff's 1st game, I'll be kind enough to give it a 6/10, but not much higher than that. I feel that this was his first game and maybe Im just more used to Avadon's story and how it plays out, but I think I played enough of the game to get an impression.
  12. Im using my 2 fighters in unison with leg sweep where my less strong fighter does the sweep while my stronger one deals a mighty blow. Unfortunately now that my characters are higher lvl, it seems as if the enemy always resists it. Is there any way around the resistance to battle disciplines? Its kind of lame as it seems that it happens more often with monsters than with humans? What resistance determines this?
  13. Im having trouble with this quest as well. It seems that there was a strange cave listed under strategy central. I can't seem to find it to get the scroll. Can anyone seem to locate that cave? It seems that it might be under pyrogs lair but I can't get there.
  14. I looked around both Fort Dranlon and Fort Dharmon and couldn't find any merchants.
  15. Ive checked through the strategy central but I don't know where or which merchant sells piercing crystals. Ive never run up against trouble like this but seeing as Im playing a 2 priest-1Fighter party, I guess it was bound to happen. My party is lvl 25 and is slowly approaching the emperor-revenge mission but right now I am just saving up for training my fighter and high dps priest. Are there any place, or places that sell them other than the tower of magi. I checked there and couldn't get any.
  16. Kilolima, I would say having an extra priest is always an extra boon. The reason being that priests dont have to just be a utility spellcaster who just buffs. You can heal, cast blessings, cast battle spells and still wear armor without restrictions. Also, priests get some decent attack spells as well. Im using a party right now with 1 fighter/priest (dualclass) who only uses buffs and the occasional healing, 1 fullclass fighter, and 1 priest. I havent had any trouble and its been a good bit of fun.
  17. Im contemplating who I will play in the next Avadon and came to my debate as to who is better at ranged combat, the shadowalker or blademaster. Ive used a blademaster my first playthrough in avadon and had a lot of success with him. Here are the benefits- -Best ranged Aoe in the game -High damage single attacks due to bonus critical chance of bow mastery -High survivability due to blessings/regeration Here are the benefits of a shadowalker who Ive used but not as much: -Lethal Aoe but not as good aoe of blademaster -Deadly ability of hitting 2 enemies with cleave throw -More ranged attacks than Blademaster via explosive attacks with corrupting damage So who really is better at ranged combat? The blademaster deals more criticals but the Shadowalker's explosives are deadly all the same. It would seem that the blademaster has a bit of an edge.
  18. One of the games I just received, Im a little reluctant to try. Its called Inquisitor, a dark fantasy rpg with some party based combat. I initially pre-ordered the game 2 years ago and just got in contact with the company and they sent me the game from good old games for not receiving it years ago. They get props for that. Im reluctant to try the game as I don't really like real time rpgs anymore. Ive kind of played them to tears and turn based combat is much more fun to me. However I would say this-after reading up on the game, if you want a game like baldurs gate that is fairly challenging in early game with nice visuals, you might be interested in this game.
  19. Thanks for the replies. It didn't matter either way. I got to erika after a long ordeal with ogres, only to find that Erika won't give me a quest or assistance. I think there's a reputation requirement because I am already joined with the scimitar.
  20. Im stuck with the main revenge quest-Meeting Erika. I did the 1st mission for the scimitar and am unable to find a way into reaching erika. As she is on an island, I first tried to go through a cave. That didn't work. Then I tried taking a boat from up north, that didn't work as there were waterfalls. Is there something that I have to do to advance a way into meeting erika or is there just a secret entrance I'm missing?
  21. Just remember, Lethal Blow is only an passive chance of happening. Not to say that lethal blow isn't good, but you won't notice it as much unless you have 5 or more points in it. Its still one of the most damaging ways of making a fighting character, but for me I like blade master as it takes affect every hit. When you do have 10 or more points into lethal blow, are dual wielding, and have a reliable amount of strength, you will have a deadly fighter. I usually stick 1 or 2 points in lethal blow and let items do the rest. Im probably going to make my next fighting character and party like your ninja but with high backstab traits.
  22. -For your ninja character, I noticed that you have 5 points into quick action and only 3 in hardiness. I would recommend since your dexterity is high, to pump those 5 points of quick action into hardiness via the editor. It will really make a difference when you do get hit.
  23. Cool party! I like the bit where you named your characters after what they would be if class were an issue. Im definitely thinking of making an Amazon or some type of spear warrior after my 1st go through. Might use backstab-Shadowlancer or something cool like that.
