Avernum Skill Builds
Death Knight replied to Death Knight's topic in Avernum Trilogy (2011-2018 remake versions)
Its kind of lame compared to old way, but I guess it is what is. There still are different ways if you think about it with how your 4 stats are. You have less freedom with skills as you get them all usually, but more freedom with stats like dex and strength as previous system had it worse. In a way, there are still some things I like more about the new system. -
I was reading over the builds written by Slarty and noticed that unless Im wrong, there really are not any builds like in previous Avernum games. You definitely could make more of a focus on strength or endurance, but other than that, it seems that you end up with a fighter with max in all combat skills except riposte. The first time I played the game, I had my main fighter specialized in Melee weapons at 20 for max amount of disciplines, 10 Hardiness, 10 Quick Action, 12 blade master, and maybe 3 points into lethal blow. The rest of the points went into tool use to help ease my mage and priest and cover traps. Do any of the people that make fighters and ranger type characters notice that they are found maxing the entire tree out by end game, or is that just one or a few people that do that. Im not disagreeing with it, but it would be much cooler if not everyone's character had the same stats/skills.

I don't remember which user/moderator said this, but Im using a similar method of playing for Avernum 4. I know its not the same game but I bet it will function the very similar. I like to make parties of 3 or 4, preferably 3 with 2 fighters and 1 hedge wizard. The one fighter gets high evasive skills and usually specializes in spears, dexterity and endurance and some hardiness. The other fighter I usually make my tank with sword and shield. I usually only put his dexterity at 5 or 6 max and focus more on melee weapons, and lots of endurance, some luck and high hardiness. Basically a character that can take large amount of poison/acid damage and general punishment. As for assassination, you can leave it at 2 for all fighters. There are items that add to it I think.

I think with a good system of laws, human beings can be alright. There's always going to be one person or small set of people that are mostly good, and just the same the other way. I went to school with many of the so called nasty and naturally evil people and those are the people that will wind up on the news some day.

Second, Guardian and Agent are VERY viable builds in those games! G2 is probably the heyday of the power of the Guardian, and a good build is quite effective. In G3, both Guardian and Agent can be VERY effective; I played melee and missile Guardians, and of the Agent is all about spells. I'm no powergaming mastermind, and I've beat the game with both those classes. It's true, I think that in G1 the Shaper is definitely the most powerful, but the other builds are viable ways to beat the game. I'm sorry that you had frustrating experiences with these games, and I hope at some point you'll be able to come back to them and find a more successful way to play through. G1 and G2 in particular are the best of series, in my opinion, in terms of story. Triumph, My biggest problem would be the bizarre difficulty jumps from regular enemies. Especially the vlish in some games kill a high endurance character in 1 shot, with or without high parry. With that said, Ive restarted characters at least 18 times from games 1-5. G1 I was guided through by the moderators so you could say I beat it, but I won't count that one. Ive asked jeff what Im doing wrong, he doesn't have a clue. He told me to return to areas where I can defeat enemies. I feel bad cause I must have bugged him a lot. He doesn't think I put points into the wrong skills, he just thinks I don't use the right setup of creations per class and that I don't have good tactics. At least I'm ok at the Avernum and Avadon series

Its always been my favorite series or favorite to get into the most, but always the one I can't play without getting the most frustrated. I find that Avadon has a better story in every aspect, but the tactics are not my style. I prefer melee to ranged and spells, but hey we each have our preferences. I think the Geneforge series out of all the games made by Jeff, needs to be remade with the highest priority. The first 3 games are broken, go on good old games forums and everyone on there recommends you play a shaper so you can have an easy time. Try an Agent or especially a Guardian, and you might as well write your death warrant. Geneforge 4 and 5, might be different but its not worth trying due to the frustration.

This is partially related to blade masters and shadow walkers. Ive completed the game with 2 missile users (Blademaster/bows and Shaman with javelins/call the storm). My last character to use for this game will be a shadow walker. Because this sounds like a weird idea, will beating the game be possible if I have-PC Shadowwalker, Shima and Sevelin. I thought it would be cool if I had 3 warrior type classes to take down enemies.

Thanks randomizer, Im now in another problem however. I am at an area just before the rogue summoning area. I think its called-Infested woods. I am having trouble with getting past the part where electric, venom and acidic thadhs come at my guardian and summoned pet. Is there a set way of removing the device to make the summons stop? I really have no idea what to do because as soon as I kill 2, a few more get created.

I made 2 attempts at him and found that when I had my first attempt, I lost. The reason why was because I rushed and didnt buy extra training and or get extra armor on my 2 tanks. In my opinion, you need a good amount of resistances to elemental damage to ensure that your fighters are sturdy. The reason the 2nd attempt worked was because I went back and got enough armor and resistance to where he couldnt hurt my tanks badly. I didnt have to worry about protecting my mage/priest much due to resistance, but Im not sure what I would have done if I had an archer as they dont have high resistances.

Im playing the 3rd gene forge with my lvl 11 guardian and 1 roamer and am having a tough time with tactics and slaying the vlish in Vlish Woods on the 2nd island. It seems like what happens in general combat is I attack a vlish with my sword, and all of a sudden, the vlish either dies and other vlish come out and swarm me and kill me and my party, or it lives and pretty much swarm like the original result. One of the problems I have is that vlish and roamers deal a ridiculous amount of damage in 1 shot. Their magic damage always hits and along with that, acid gets on my character and most characters don't survive after that. Im playing a guardian and here are my stats- Strength 6 Dexterity2 Intelligence 3 Endurance 5 Melee 11 Missiles 2 Quick action 5 Parry 8 Blessing magic 1 2 fire shaping Healing 2 5 mechanics and 5 leadership My resistances and armor are all good (or high for that area) with 68 armor and 40 for all other resistances Does anyone have any ideas with tactics, the only real enemies I have problems with are acid roamers and vlish.

I then started over on Hard with a regular four-man party, and the game was still hard enough to be very fun. I think the difficulty has changed (IMHO) so that people starting the series who aren't aquainted with any of the other games, can start off with not too hard a play, then feel free to change the difficulty however they want. Those who've already played can simply start off on Hard or Torment, to get the experience they're used too. The only thing that changed in Avadon that I had to get used to at first was the tactics. When playing gene forge and avernum, if you are playing a warrior or anyone with swords, you will likely be fighting opponents with swords or melee weapons most of the time without much problems if your stats are ok. Avadon is different in that 1/3s into the game its ok to beat on an enemy boss with melee at first, but sooner rather than later, ranged weapons will be your main source of dealing damage to bosses and enemies when in mid fight. This is mostly due to the fact that enemies try and get away from your party to launch ranged attacks and spells. Its still challenging at parts of the game with major boss battles, and unchallenging with most of the regular enemies. So yes I agree that the game is different.

Im not really hating on the outdoor encounters, I just usually like games to have a solid story even if it doesnt matter. Everything else was good from what I saw. Not to question jeff or anything, but I am starting to believe that the earlier 5 or 8 skill point per lvl system works better. Im not saying that Avernum Escape from the Pit is the worst, but if you had given Avernum 1-3 of the earlier games a revamp of graphics with the old 5 skill point system, that would be awesome. Its my own fault it took me a while to understand what works for lvling in the old games, but once you do know, I doubt Geneforge 1-5 and Avernum 4-6 will be better with a revamp. If what you say is true of Nethergate, I will definitely give it a shot. Thanks for your opinion.

Blades of Avernum Edited Characters
Death Knight replied to Spigelbrecher's topic in Blades of Avernum
Im sorry but I dont understand, you edited the characters? -
I have a recommendation question in regards to nethergate. I just finished the revenge emperor quest for Avernum Escape from the Pit and Im very glad it was over due to a negative experience with the game. I really didnt like anything about the game-The lack of story, the annoying outdoor battles. My question is is Nethergate Resurrection worth it or is it just another Avernum escape from the pit where there is crap fights in the outdoors, and little to no story?

Well yeah, thats what everyone on the forums is complaining about. A lot of the fans of pure magic using characters think its lame that at HOL 3 they are essentially almost useless. I happen to think that there is a set way of playing the game that can be effective. That way is either you play the game as a pure ranged user or as a melee user that also uses ranged weapons as a novelty. My 1st time in completing the game made me seriously wonder just how gimped some of the melee characters can be when it comes to fighting mages. In reality the etherim would almost be considered better warriors than the nogur and other races as they aren't gimped completely with weak magic resistance like the nogur. Regardless of all that, what you said about rasvim is news to me as Ive never played the race.

I just finished completing a game called the Quest by Redshift, a small indie company that makes old school games. The game is very much like A Bard's Tale, but in present day. Basically a lot of things are very simplistic about the game for most players. I was tearing the game up with a dexterity based melee Seiry (the rogue race in this game), and when getting to the end I noticed that while it was hard, there happened to be things I thought about such as how much easier certain parts of the game would be with ranged bow and arrow and how balanced the game's combat was. I completed the game and was satisfied with the last boss fight but I thought of something in games. Do you all think that in rpgs like these, its better for each type of combat style to be almost completely balanced or have one that is outclassing the others except for a few small details. In that particular game, melee was good when facing large amounts of fighting enemies, but trying to get up to a mage was a real pain. Whereas an archer outclasses them all, and eventually mages become useless as magic immunity for enemies happens in the 3rd expansion.
-
I doubt we will see any new classes though as Jeff will probably only add classes if he ever decides to make another Avadon series (maybe a non-linear one).
-
Im hoping that if Jeff does any new classes or anything with classes, he goes towards making some of the other class archtypes of d and d. A monk would be cool although Im not sure what ranged weapon he would use. Another cool one would be like a barbarian/berserker type class.
-
Ive always liked the classes system in Avadon, even if you dont get as much freedom as Avernum. But one thing Ive always wondered was what are the classes of the famous NPCs like Redbeard, Miranda, etc. Now I know they dont have classes but what class would they fit under if they were to correspond to one. Shadow Tarkus-Most definitely a Shadowwalker, his moves when fighting redbeard, his look. Redbeard-Really no idea, the only thing that might make some sense would be a blademaster due to his physical power. Miranda-Sorceress? Duke Griffin-? Those are just a few and this will change if Jeff ever decides to add new classes in the last or next Avadon.

A:EftP - Hitting a Brick Cavewall
Death Knight replied to UlyssesCant's topic in Avernum Trilogy (2011-2018 remake versions)
Trust me on this. I know exactly how you feel. The beginning is somewhat tough. However, it does get better and fast. I recall that I was much more able to hit things when lvls 8-12. The cool thing is that you can go virtually anywhere. I recall that I traveled to the castle as I completed the nephilim quest early, and did a few fetch quests such as finding rings for the king's son and other quests. You can try to kill the rats in the tunnels underneath Formello from the job board there. Or give a message to Motrax from formello, (also on job board). Do what parts you can of the ancient crypt (job board), see the priestess in formello for a quest that also is simple and relies on Motrax. On top of that, there are countless enemies that you can slay while traveling that will give good experience for a while. The best advice there is is just to explore and defeat what areas you can, and go back to the harder ones later.
