Ive decided to give gene forge 2 a go with a missile weapons guardian build. I know melee but have never really used missile weapons and was wondering if I should have some parry maybe to about 9 or 10 as parry was powerful in geneforge 2. Will I be able to use a guardian in that way if I focus more on dexterity, a little endurance and missile weapons? I just don't want to have to get parry to 15 or 20 to achieve a relatively normal miss rate.

Well that was why I found Avadon to make sense because dexterity characters rule. The battles and the tactics are particular about what you do, but mostly as long you focus a decent amount in dexterity you don't even really need endurance. I got through the game with 2 points into endurance for a shaman and now with a shadow walker the same. If you play your cards right, you can enhance your equipment with endurance and or even better use a few necklaces or rings that add endurance.

Geneforge 3, 4 and 5, were all not very great. Geneforge 3 is plagued with linear gone wrong. Other than that, it had a better story than the 4th and 5th. Geneforge 3 also could have been much better if the game had the action point system of 4 and 5. Geneforge 4 was alright for story, but the game got extremely annoying and boring to play once in the fens of aziraph with the regenerating creations. Geneforge 5 just was boring and the least like a gene forge. It had linear and nonlinear in it and it didn't do good in either.
The reason the first 3 gene forges were better than 4 and 5 is because the first 3 gene forge games all were about the lone wanderer type feeling that the 4th and 5th didn't have. It was all about the coming of war instead of the war itself. Geneforge 4 and 5 just were lame because it was about the war and no more of the lone feeling of gene forge 1 and 2. Just thinking of it makes me want to fire up gene forge 1 or 2!

Two milliseconds each and every time you pick up an item adds up, though.
Dikiyoba has a hard time playing G3 because of the new inventory system plus the old encumbrance system. Too much time is spent in inventory management.
I gave up on Geneforge 3 as well. It had a somewhat interesting plot and was pretty cool but once I got to the warped creator in the beginning, the game ended. He was too hard even on easy and I couldn't find out how much leadership I needed to talk my way past. If jeff remakes that game, he should add a mechanical way of killing the thing. That would be cool and would fit what you do to shaila in gene forge 4 with the sabotage.

From what I have seen, I find the shapers to be fairly normal compared to the rebels and others. Its true that they don't care for creations but the rebels have no problems going through the extreme measures to achieve victory. Just seems too much. I miss when in Geneforge 1 and 2 where I at least have an idea who the bad guy is and who is the good guy. In gene forge 3, I found that they are both nuts. Maybe its just me.

I just find the old games to be fun for the first 1/4 of the game. But after that all skills that you mastered, no longer have the ability to make major changes. From there you just make minor changes of weapon skills, melee, intelligence and endurance.

I find that while the older games offer more freedom with stat choices, the new system of Avadon and Avernum: EFTP makes playing the original gene forge 1-5 and all other games pointless. The new game system is much more well done and offers more freedom in the long run. Also, you are given much more leniency in finding out what works in game. I find that if you are a new player, once you play Avadon or Avernum EFTP, you will enjoy the leveling system much much more.

Regardless of winning the election or losing it, I wonder if Donald Trump will ever get over this. He's saying he will march onto washington, lol.
-
Just voted a couple hours ago. To be honest, I just want this election to end and hopefully the next person does a good job. I'm almost at the point where I don't care who wins.

Brick has power? That's encouraging. Neptune/Belmar/Wall/Sea Girt are still out, last I heard.
I should have rephrased that, most parts of brick have power, and my parents neighborhood in wall has power. However, the rest of wall is dangerous at night.
-
Ok, things are going a little bit better for my family. My parents have power in their house, which makes my house in brick less of a place to just wash clothes at. Still need power for my aunt and uncle and my grandparents who need it the most. I still got to keep an eye of everyone but the worst of it is over. I will still say, that there are still quite a bit of people without power. I don't think this will change for at least another few days to a week. I just hope that some people will be able to vote on Tuesday.
Oh and Halloween in New Jersey is tomorrow the 5th, lol.

One of the things that I never understood about Avernum 5 and the rest of the 2nd trilogy was getting parry. In Avernum Escape from the Pit, you could get by without use of parry so long as another fighter is tougher/has high health and you have some points into endurance. In the gamefaqs guide and the general guide on here, most say parry is needed. If I just want to focus on weapon skills, quick action, strength and endurance, will I have problems with getting 1 shotted later on in the game without having skills in parry?

Archery is very useful and I can confirm that it does usually do more damage than pole arms and sword and board. So while it doesn't beat dual wielding, its still good. The problem with losing a place to pick off enemies is usually negated when you use your sword fighter/melee combatant to take the heat off the rest of the party. Its still like Avadon where melee has uses in helping remove the scope of your enemies against your fragile combatants.
In response to this thread, I think that the game offers a lot of roleplaying to be had and in a way I like some things from Avernum EFTP better than Avadon.
For some reason, whenever I play a party based game, I like to be able to target any enemy and take them out through melee skill, etc. Avernum and Geneforge has that way that melee is stronger and hopefully jeff will keep that up in future games. Avadon doesn't have that, but makes up for it with a better story, better characters and overall more fun to play.
The only main grief and major grief I have with this game is that the story just isn't strong enough to engage in. Im on my 3rd play through with Avadon and just can't find a reason to pick this up again.

I just got out of a 5 day trek in nj without food, internet, power, sanity-only to find that I have work tomorrow.
I really didn't think this storm would be that big. I couldn't have been more wrong.
It really was just crazy and Ive never seen some of the bizarre human behavior in stores/gas stations such as this before.
Oh well. At least some places I stay at are getting internet.

This is probably the only kickstarter Ive seen where I am intrigued by the universe and look of the game. Props for OP for letting me know!

Congratulations Triumph and all who are now moderators. Lets follow up with the momentum and keep the insanity high!

I found that although he isnt around most of the time in Avernum Escape from the Pit, Lagran was the most in character and well thought out bad guy in the Avernum series. He's really just a rogue that takes what he wants from those that aren't strong and yet is a coward through and through. If he didn't appear twice, I probably wouldnt remember him so well.
The bad guy I thought that was the most weak was Captain Newsom from Avernum 5.

my first serious girlfriend happened by complete coincidence to be a huge spiderweb fan. her favourite game was exile 2, so she had good taste too (although that was already proven by the fact that she went out with me)
that relationship turned out to be a disaster but oh well!
Thats so cool even if it didn't work. The problem though is its so rare to find. Whatever the case, I got to find me one of those.

To be completely honest, I don't care for either one over the other. Both have people to talk to and its with people that play the games I'm most into.
-
I would not recommend him exile because the graphics are an issue for him. Avadon might be a good choice though. The main problem is that he's played a lot of computer games, but a lot of the strategy games he has played are games that aren't that hard. I might just stick with Wesnoth as its going to be aggravation otherwise.
-
That sounds like a good idea. I was going to recommend Avadon or Geneforge but don't know if he can get into it. I'll probably go with Avernum Escape from the Pit as its the most recent, if he can't get into Wesnoth. I only played Wesnoth for a half hour, but it seems to have some cool things in it. Thanks all.

I have a friend who Ive known for a while and his birthday is coming up. It just recently came to my attention that he plays a lot of turn based strategy games/some roleplaying elements. Here's where it gets interesting, while he's played games like Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and 4, he's never even heard of roleplaying games like Baldurs Gate, Temple of Elemental Evil, Planescape torment, where you create a whole party, or other turn based party rpgs. He has played Dragon Age though and said the isometric view is really cool.
I was thinking that while he has played some strategy games with roleplaying elements, I want to recommend something from Spiderweb Software he can finish without too much frustration.
Does anyone have any game ideas that might work if he is into strategy/rpg?

Never happened to me either.

G2-Is parry needed for a missile weapons build?
in Geneforge Series
Posted
Oh, thats what I intend to do. I wasn't going to take the hard route and make a guardian that goes solo with missile weapons. No, I intend to use 1 or 2 creations for backup so I don't get swarmed.
