That was always one of the things I never do that much now. I used to name certain creations when I tried taking a few creations of 1st and 2nd tier along, but that never works. Once Geneforge 4 and 5 come along, disposable creations are almost a necessity. Its not that the 1st and 2nd tier arent good, its just that the new ap system allows enemies to simply run along the battle lines of my poor unfortunate fyora (or other low creature) and squish them. Geneforge 1-3 had more protection in that aspect as you could protect them much better.

I spoke with Jeff a few months back as I wanted to know if he would ever remake it. He said that he would, but that it would not happen for quite a long time

How to deal with Enemy Mages?
Death Knight replied to Aramazon's topic in Avernum Trilogy (2011-2018 remake versions)
Aramazon, You can use leg sweep which is a battle discipline for melee. Use that with a melee user on the mage/priest and it will force them to stay close. You might have to reload if it doesnt work but Ive done that area at lvl 6. Another thing you can do if you have an archer is just basically duel the mage with your arrows. When I did use archers in my party, they are the best characters to hold their ground against mage/priests until you can remove enough of the opposition for your melee to join the fight. -
Sylae you crack me up. That jeff picture is hilarious.

Theres a few problems with that. I pre-ordered the game and even though it came out a week ago, its still unplayable for many people, including myself. They have major problems with pc and while I am patient, its kind of hard to know that half the users on forums are playing the game, while the other half arent getting past the bug crash at startup. Your better off waiting for them to release some patches if you want a party based game. If that doenst work, I can definitely recommend Eschalon book 1 for a solo character game. Its a great game, has a great story, and is relatively alot like old spiderweb games with character cusomization. You can specialize into a few select skills and feel very much like the spiderweb experience. Its also very replayable as well.

Yeah, I think that what was wrong with fights like those is my own style of characters. When I used to play Second trilogy, I had 2 melee or pole fighters and a hedge wizard. What I found works better in all Avernum Games is doing what you said, and also instead of 2 fighters, 1 fighter and 1 archer with a wizard. That way, only 1 of my characters is getting slammed against the wall and the archer can take down other essentials without getting hit. Takes off some of the healing from wizard as well. Im gonna try that on my next run. Thanks for tip!

Ive played enough of Avadon a number of times to know that based on some of the difficult other fights in game, fighting redbeard is a good way of taking the remaining amount of sanity I have left and mailing it to jeff. Ill be the first person to say that the next game would be really cool if you are given more choices for endgame fights/ending paths that can be beaten and hopefully, if Redbeard is there, there is a chance to fight him that is at least marginally reasonable

Best equipment in G4? And other questions.
Death Knight replied to Triumph's topic in Geneforge Series
Triumph, make the legs of the tyrant. It has a decent armor rating, gives 5 to melee, and has vampiric touch. The vampiric tough alone makes it one of the better items to use for a solo character. I used it on my warrior for g4 and it was awesome. Gotta love running through the fens while normally hard monsters fall to each swipe of my blade. It was hard to make but you can make it before the fens if you spend some time. -
I agree for the most part with what you said. I think that Avernum 5 was the hardest and I still have yet to beat it. Once I get to Lysstek the Beast quest, the game pretty much ends for me. Sure Avernum 4 had its moments that I couldnt beat, but most of those moments were optional. Lysstek the bandit leader in Avernum 5, was a main mission. I havent actually played Avernum 6 so I wouldnt know. However, I read a few reviews and the reviews state that jeff makes many things more simplified for the average player while still giving a challenge to the advanced.

Ive been looking through some of my old games that were mostly infinity engine games and there was just too many coincedences now that I think of it. Its almost like each trilogy is a game series that jeff based his games on. 1-Planescape Torment-Geneforge series easily. The different factions, different ways of going about solving something, though not so much as geneforge. Different dialog which can be affected by your charisma/wisdom. The whole game is very much like that series so I guess thats why Jeff based it on it. Note, I do see some deus ex here too. 2-Avernum 4-6-This is most definitely Icewind dale 1 and 2. Its got the same way about it, go to this captain and then solve their problems. Its mostly linear like both the games for the infinity engine too. 3-Avadon-This one is in my opinion more like baldurs gate than Dragon Age. Ive played a little dragon age, and that game is still a baldurs gate homage as well. Avadon also has recruitable party members like bg and dragon age. No contest where he got the inspiration. 4-Avernum1-3: This one is the only one that stands out. It has might and magic written on it and very much so. So what seems to be made of this, is that Jeff is like the indie version of bioware, even if he doesnt like that label. Dont get me wrong, all of his games are entirely original but I am starting to wonder how to decides what he is going to base his games on. Does anyone think that he uses new and inventive game ideas (that work) on how he decides what his next games will be, because it seems that way.

If you do screw up your party in this trilogy its just as big of a kick to the teeth as it is in Geneforge series. I remember just recently got through half the game in gene forge 3, only to hit a roadblock and be unable to progress further. I basically just lost 5-6 hours. The reason I guess why Avernum is a little less forgiving, is because you are running a 3 or 4 player party. If one character is fairly lackluster, its much less of a burden than in Geneforge. The reason being is that in Geneforge, everything stems from that character. If that character isn't on top of the right stats, you've got a major problem as that affects all your creations as well.

That actually is very good news. When I took my exams a year ago when I finished college, it was like the calm before the storm. I had to do a project on something/someone important. I did it on one of my favorite bands and did alright with it. If I had done it again, I was going to do a biography on Jeff Vogel. I found out that he might have been from Jersey. It listed Jeff's origin there on linked in. Who'd figure that my homestate would be where he was from. I doubt it was true though.

Those are both heartwarming. Ive really got to start exing out of the bad news I see immediately on yahoo. I should just do like my dad does, if its crap, get rid of it.

I figure that the world has enough bad things happening of late. Between crazy wars, to bizarre acts of evil, where's the good? In this thread (if you can), try and spread some positive news that you might know of. Its good and helps keep positive spirits. Ill do mine. So I was looking at the news today and it showed a police officer that spent $100 on shoes for a homeless man in NY. It was really cool and more stuff like that should be shown instead of the usual. Anyone else have any good heroic type news?

Im not trying to sabotage, but your username today is hilarious. (Goin' rogue, be back later)

I just find the game to be too easy when dualwielding which is why I usually go sword and board. The damage you do with dual wielding is ridiculously overpowered. When I play my characters they are not overpowered, but still deadly on their own. I dont know, I might go with dual wield some day but for now my backstabbers and fighters are all sword and board.

The best fighter skill is hardiness and that will likely never change. You can go without blademaster, parry, quick action and you will still be lethal. Quick action is useless unless you prefer to backstab a lot. You can use a finesse fighter to go first and attack and get as much aggro as possible, all while the slow rogue comes from behind for a wicked backstab. Backstab seems weak, but if you get one a decent percent of the time, thats a considerable amount of damage your getting extra. I would recommend anyone that doesnt dual wield to use backstab. Sword and board gives it a kick as does spears. Dualwielding it kind of pointless to backstab as your already dealing a load of damge.

Raustblackdragon, I am in the process of writing a faq or role-playing guide for fighters and such for gamefaqs. Im mainly writing the guide for purposes that you mentioned-roleplaying. This is not to say that the characters are not powerful, but moreso, it allows for much more choices than the old system allowed. Im thinking that all of the characters Im working will be able to make it through hard, normal and easy. I usually only play on normal and hard though so if you know any tips for torment other than me pulling my hair out

How powerful would Geneforge 1-5 be compared to Avernum? I know that in Geneforge 5, the health meter is almost ranked up in the thousands for some characters and some characters get insanely powerful to that end.
-
I usually stop leveling my characters at that lvl because a point or 2 of dexterity makes little difference compared to critical hit chance. I do only the side quests that give really useful items. Especially the critical hit bonus items which I collect for my main character. When my character has a high critical hit chance from items and stats, then I go about finishing the game.

Yeah, it would be nice if max lvl in Avadon 2-3 was 35 or more. Of course, my chars are always lvl 27 when I complete Avadon. I guess jeff doesnt want there to be too high a lvl with a larger amount of skill points per lvl.
