  1. I cannot see the images in the OP in Chrome and Explorer. Anyway, I think 2X magnification with no smoothing would be fine. I don't care if the game looks pixelated.
  2. I would like to see 2x magnification too.
  3. OK, the problem had nothing to do with the operating system being 64 bits. Rather, it was because I moved the default OS downloads folder to a different partition. This can be easily done in Windows 7 by right-clicking on the folder and adjusting the settings on the "Location" tab of the properties page. This is a new feature of Windows 7 which Avadon apparently does not support.
  4. Surely the system requirements for Avernum 5 are less than 2.2 GHz?
  5. No luck. Tried using a different download link and browser. Same problem. The installer seems able to extract the contents of the archive, but then is unable to proceed.
  6. I get a 1013 "Failed to run setup" error if they're related in any way. Compatibility mode is grayed out.
  7. Yes, I realized that belatedly. However, Avernums 5 & 6 run OK on the same system. (Especially Avernum 6.)

  9. The problems still remain with the April 2011 nVidia drivers and the DirectX Run-Time Engine installed. [edit] Forgot to add that I've since upgraded to an nVidia GeForce GTX 460.
  10. In AV5 lamps were really necessary for caverns and such since they were very dark. However, everything in AV6 seems to be lighter, making lamps seem useless. Are there any other uses for lamps? Do they increase your chance to hit in dark areas? Also, does Anatomy work just for melee and missile attacks, or for spells as well?
  11. I couldn't find Bortund anywhere north of the Castle. Where is he exactly? [edit] Oops. I though this list was for AV6.
  12. After examining the portraits for Avernums 4-6, I think the original portraits somehow got "squashed" between the time they left the artist's hands and the time Jeff got them. Compare the images below: At left is an example of one of the original portraits as they appear in AV5; at right is a version I stretched vertically a tad in a graphics program. At least to me the stretched version looks marginally better... If this is in fact the case, I'm surprised nobody noticed/commented upon it before now. Some of the newer sprites (such as G230, G231, G242, G243 in AV6) probably don't need any fixing. Some of the sprites (such as G226 in AV6) could probably benefit from having the modification applied *twice*.
  13. [edit] Moved to tech support since that is probably the better place.
  14. My hunch would be a DirectX issue, you can't install older DirectX versions on Windows 7 as far as I know.
  15. This is a continuation of the other thread in the AV5 forum (though my problems are with AV4). I'm getting real poor performance in AV4 on Windows 7 64-bit depending on what is going on in the game. For instance, the game is choppy in the inventory, sell, buy and train screens. I am hardly able to select items to sell them or transfer them to other party members. The performance also drops when floating speech text appears above NPCs in towns and so forth. When the speech text disappears the game suddenly speeds up again. The menus that only have text in them don't seem to suffer from slowdown and work without problems. And as long as there is no floating speech text above characters the map scrolling speed is fine too. I encountered choppy gameplay in AV5 as well, but was able to solve the problem by setting the process priority to "above normal" in Process Explorer. Unfortunately this did not fix the menu slowdown in AV4, even on higher settings. I'm not sure what to do at this time. XP compatibility mode doesn't seem to help either. Tried re-installing the game with no luck. Specs: Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit 2.2GHz single core Intel Celeron 450 GeForce 210 external graphics card GeForce 7050 mainboard chipset 3GB RAM DirectX 11 updated to latest redistributables (June 2010) SATA hard drive with lots of space Latest graphics and chipset drivers from nVidia (July 2010)
  16. Thanks, but it seems the file is too large as it gets truncated regardless. Here's a download link to it: http://www.mediafire.com/file/nn5xwvznr71kgmw/av4itemschars_v1_0_0.zip
  17. [edit] Just realized there's a dedicated tech support forum.
  18. 10%-15% maybe, but that's all. [edit] I started a new thread in the other forum.
  19. Meh. The thing I don't like about it is that your melee characters can't reach enemies and attack them in the same round. Meaning that only my archer is actually doing anything for the first round of every battle. Unless you want to give the enemy a free chance to whack you with no response, or waste a bunch of MP on low-level critters. This draws out the length of the game as a whole with no apparent benefit. 20. In order to make AV4 more like AV5 (since some features are superior IMO), I reduced the weight of all non-equippable items to 0, and the value of all items worth less than 4 coins to 0. If anyone wants a copy of the file I can post it here. One thing I still don't like is how much shorter the movement ranges seem to be in AV4. In AV5 it seemed you could move farther before running out of action points. Also, I don't remember ever seeing a "You don't have enough action points to perform this action" message in AV5. Kind of annoying. Not sure how to "fix" this.
  21. Thanks for the correction. I updated the first post. As a result, Soldier is now at 85 and Shaman is at 91.
  22. Just started Avernum 4 and the performance is even worse.
  23. Is there a list for miscellaneous items you should hold onto for quests and such, like there is for AV5? Also, is there a way to set the value of all items that cannot be sold to 0?
  24. Here's a table I created in a spreadsheet showing the number of starting skill points that each class gets, including the custom class. Code: Skill Cost@0 Soldier Bersk. Priest Sorc. The cost increases by 1 for every 2 levels in the skill you buy. The (+2) indicates that you may have two more points in a skill depending on the race you select, though this has no effect on cost. The table of course doesn't take into account whether a skill is actually worth having for a particular build. The effect of traits is also not considered, nor are experience penalties.
