  1. When I first played Avadon I wasn't all that in love with the game either, but it has since grown on me. The first time through I played on Normal. Since Jeff has "re-aligned" the difficulty settings, it wasn't as engaging as Avernum and Geneforge were for me. However, I decided to have another go at the game as a Singleton. It was great fun, and the boss fights were a challenge. So, I decided to do one more run-through on Hard, with an eye to building a group that can take out Redbeard. It's been quite an immersive experience. Also, I think it is just plain a little different from Jeff's usual design. Normally there is this huge world to explore. With Avadon it's more like peeling back the layers of an onion - there is always something new to discover - be it another quest or a hidden entrance to a new area.
  2. Your basic concept sounds good to me and is close to the one I used. I pulled up my A5 file, but the saved games had been erased. So, I pulled up A4 and had the following statistics in the later stages of the game. Tank - melee human Str=7, Dex=7,Int=4,End=7, Melee=10, Bows=8, Quick Strike=6, Parry=7, Blademaster=18 Ssch - melee slith Str= 14, Dex=5, Int=5, End=8, Pole=14, Bows=14, Quick Strike=2, Parry=2, Blademaster=3 Mrr - priest Bows=12, Priest=17 Cordelia - wizard Int=10, Mage=17 It seemed to work quite well.
  3. Are you planning on having melee fighters only while ignoring Clerics and Mages?
  4. And, have you set the difficulty level down to Easy so you aren't taking on more problems than absolutely necessary?
  5. Somehow I didn't get the feeling that there were going to be any more Avernum adventures after A6 ended.
  6. I have an old PC that runs Win XP. Would your link work on that PC? Is it worth the effort? Thanks for your help!
  7. When I played A6 on my iPad I only fought in the Arena two times. So, I just pulled up a saved game and hot-footed it over to Spire. I was able to enter the Arena with no problem. Have you tried closing A6 and restarting the iPad to see if the error still occurs?
  8. One thing you might want to be aware of with Avernum 6. The Normal setting on the iPad is easier than the Normal setting on the Mac and PC versions. Apparently the Hard and Torment settings are the same on all platforms.
  9. I got about half way through the third book when I suddenly realized that we were just going to keeping circling through the same plot lines forever. Totally lost interest at that point.
  10. 1. I actually found a reference to Eschalon (Book 1) on the Mac site under "staff favorites." I had never played an RPG before, and immediately fell in love. People on that forum talked about Spiderweb, so I downloaded Avernum 6 - and fell in love all over again. Have worked my way through most of Jeff's games since then. 2. None of my friends are hard core gamers. The few that play games want flashy graphics, little thinking and a fairly easy experience.
  11. It seems to me the question of game music is part and parcel of the game designer's approach to his craft. If you look at Basilisk Games, the two Eschalon books have wonderful music. Thomas has redrawn the tiles for each game. He is a perfectionist, and the down side is that in four years he has produced two games with no announcement yet on the third one. Jeff has said that he wants game pieces with interchangeable pieces. He can click them together relatively quickly and get on with telling his story. Taking the time to integrate music (not to mention the cost of having it written) would probably slow down game development. I do appreciate having a new game show up every year.......
  12. Just finished Nethergate (playing a Celt), and I have to thank you guys for talking me into giving it a go. It's a terrific game, and I'm looking forward to seeing it from the Roman perspective in the near future. Such a unique story line!
  13. Randomizer - that was hysterical. I actually had to program in COBOL once.....

  15. Just thought the moderators might want to update a couple of broken links. The first Nethergate page has two options at the top - Shrodinger and Matt P. The Shrodinger option actually links to an Avernum II page. The Matt P link works fine. And, Randomizer's Item List page has links to different sections of the map. None of those work, but you can manually scroll down to find the section you want to look at.....
  16. You were right about those pesky skeletons. It took me several hours to retrace back to Hagfen, and now I'm ready to head east. Thanks so much!
  17. If that were the configuration I confronted, your solution would work. However, this is what I saw on the north side of the room.
  18. Thanks for your help. I have the screen shot and am trying to figure out how to put it into this post. This was the block configuration when I walked into the room.
  19. I'm still stuck. Here is the room configuration: bEbF ABCD I had already figured out that I need to get into the blank space west of F so I can shove it eastward. So, I move C and wind up with: bECF ABbD I still can't get to F, and I can't slip diagonally into anything....
  20. The link is inactive and I have the same miserable problem. Help again!
  21. I am confused about the importance of an area in the east called "The Stone Gate." I am playing as a party of Celts. The area is cold but that's it. Nothing to explore, nothing to do. What gives?
  22. Last question first - to see the spell level your character has press the ? next to his/her portrait. Then, at the bottom left of the statistics screen, press "See Spells/Abilities." That will show you all of the possible spells, which ones your guy has, and his level for each spell. Dispel barrier is kind of frustrating because there is no recourse if you aren't able to cast it at a high enough level. Your can get "piercing crystals" that will open barriers level 1 and 2. If those don't work, you are looking at a level 3 barrier. You won't gain that skill at level 3 until fairly late in the game. If I understand your first question properly, the basic answer is that if you have a character with priest only skills, that person won't be able to understand mage spells. Also, a character must have enough Spellcraft to understand the book on the pedestal. Hope this helps....
  23. I have a question about how action points are calculated. My main warrior (aka Tank) suddenly went from 4 to 3 action points in battle. I have no idea why. He is carrying 90 lbs. out of a possible 210, so he isn't overburdened. Everyone else has 4 AP. Any idea what happened to my man?
