  1. Breaking the OS / database is absolutely the best way to learn. Just make sure you have a good back up to go to when you need to restore. Virtual Machines are not dual-boot, they run as background processes when you start them (they can be started automatically at boot time. Accessing them simply connecting to them like you would any other shell program. As for the budgetary constraints, I understand. Been there, done that, got the shirt.
  2. That's probably the main reason I never liked min-max-ing, too much work detracts from the fun of the game. That, plus I could not adapt from a combined arms / special forces mind set to one of a collection of one trick parrots.
  3. You are correct, treasure left outdoors was lost, but you did gain the advantage of being able to store you stuff anywhere in any town, not limiited to just three areas within three towns ( 1 area per town).
  4. You might like this version I wrote to run in Windows. I am trying to get around to making it compatible to all platforms. Look at the screen shots and if it appears worth the trouble of Wining about it, then have at it. http://www.harehunter.info/BoE/ExScenEd.html
  5. You are correct Sunutpen. In Exile ! and II you had to type the ( first four letters ) of a word into a text box. This made it possible to short circuit some conversation threads. If you knew the key word on the last page of a dialog, you could skip the entire dialog and get to the end.
  6. Do I need both the PWCT and the Supernova? I'm still under the load of two people so any short cuts you may have, the better.
  7. I took an instant disliking to the character the first time I met him. I have killed him in every episode, but the blinker keeps showing up. Just for fun, you might want to play along with him just to see where he is going. That is one feature I like about these games. You can play variations of them.
  8. Interesting Ishad, I would really love to get my editor out of MS specific Visual Basic to an open source platform. The logic should go down easily, it is all the forms and graphics handling that has been problematic. Where would I start?
  9. I could not believe my eyes. I could swear that someone said that Exile was free. So I had to go and verify. Sure enough, it is free. www.spiderwebsoftware.com/exile/winexile.html I would not hold my breath for the open source. But then again ...
  10. I have not added the commentary yet, but you can get a more detailed view of the map of Avernum on my website.
  11. Paranoia is a healthy attitude when it comes to trying new things at the super user level. Have you checked out the price of refurbished machines lately? For about $250 you can get a very decent machine with 32-bit Windows 7 Pro installed, with installation disk. This will run the Exile and Nethergate (original) without any tweaks. Not a cost free solution, but there is still some life left in Win7 so there are other uses for it.
  12. And as Osky pointed out, Battle Rage is only a level 1 priest spell. So is Heal. Plus, while encumbrances such as heavy armor may prevent Mage spells from being cast, this does not affect Priest spells.
  13. True, but the effect of the haste was less than that of the mage Haste, which could make a slowed PC into a hasted one. Sometimes Battle rage would do that but often all you got was less slowed.
  14. That is why I like to have two PCs who can cast Haste. If you have only one pure mage and he gets slowed by a Quickghast, you're not going to have a pleasant day. Having two increases your odds of surviving such an encounter.
  15. Funny, I don't remember Avernum 1-3 being all that tough. Avernum 4-6, with their Boss characters were a bit tougher. It just took figuring out the best tactics for each situation.
  16. After running into the situations in E2, I did go back and replayed E1 with the same build strategy. I found it to be easier, for me at least, than with my first attempt with more pure characters. I found that my tactics using fire teams works well in many circumstances.
  17. Randomizers recommendations are all very good. If you are into experimenting, you can check out my web site for the party build I developed playing Exile. Look for the link to the Mad Monk Squad. It works well for Avernum as well, but it does not take full advantage of new features in those games.
  18. I was in the Army as a combat engineer officer. Four years active duty, plus 12 more reserve. My dad was field artillery in the Pacific, my step dad was army air corp in Italy. My ROTC camp was six weeks in the middle of Kansas in the middle of the summer. It was a good thing the barracks had no air conditioning; it made it easier to become acclimated to the heat. My officer basic course was in Virginia in the winter. Our infantry phase field exercise was the last week of January in a foot or two of snow. While I was never in combat, I was prepared for what ever did come down the pike. One of my jobs in the reserves was with the battle simulations center. We ran command and staff exercises on computers that simulated the troops in the field. A lot of my tactical knowledge came from that experience.
  19. Having been in the military myself I tend to see the PC characters from a small unit perspective rather than an individual person. My first player is essentially an armor unit, and while their primary mission is to engage in close combat, they also have a heavy weapons section to provide ranged indirect fire. My number two guy is a heavy infantry /combat engineer (high skill in tool use) and they also have mortars available. My two hedge wizards are my primary artillery units, And every unit has a medical team attached to it. But that is just me. I have never played singleton or torment, just never had the time or patience. Besides, I enjoy cartography even more.
  20. Ranged combat is one of the reasons I developed the Mad Monk Squad. I know that it is not min/max compliant but it reflects a style that suits me. http://www.harehunter.info/MadMonkSquad.html
  21. It has been a very hectic past few weeks, leading up to a 60 hour patch run on my production database at work. I wish I had something more positive to offer.
  22. I have them on my new website. http://www.harehunter.info/downloads/V1_Graphics.zip
  23. I'm probably going to get ripped for this, but here is the style that worked for me. http://harehunter.info/MadMonkSquad.html There are good reasons for playing 'pure skills' instead of the multi-functional groups I played, but I still find that this style works best for me.
  24. Harehunter's Haven has a new home www.harehunter.info I have begun a major mapping expedition of Exile III, which is about 50% complete as of today. www.harehunter.info/Exile3/Maps/MainMap3.html Old (unlicensed) versions of Exile 1 and Exile 2 are here as well. Also, since these games will not play on a 64-bit OS, I have instructions for installing DOSBox to run a Windows 3.1 shell. Within that environment, Exile runs very well. Finally, I have, with Jeff Vogels permission, an HTML version of the hint books for this series. These are also available on Spiderweb's home web site.
