  1. I know that Jeff is a Mac guy. I know that this means the PC version will always be later and expect that it will cost a bit more. Does this make me get mad and say, "He shouldn't release the MAC version until the PC version is ready too! It's not fair!" Why does it hurt me that the Mac folks get to play the game before I do? As long as I do not read too many spoilers on the forums here, I get the same experience that they do when it is available for PC. If enough people get upset about the extra $5 for the PC version and refuse to buy it, what will happen? Will Jeff lower the PC price, or will he decide that it is not worth the hassle to do the port to PC any more, making this a Mac only game? That would be a real shame.

The way I see it is this: The Mac buyers are paying for the development of the game. The PC buyers are paying for part of the development of the game, and for the port of the game to Windows, which can be a pain in the nether regions, and takes a lot of time. The iPad buyers are paying for the port of the game to iPad, which does not take as long, and is not as expensive. If you want to wait for it on iPad, and only pay $10, and deal with the limitations, good for you. I hope Jeff sells a hundred million iPad copies (as long as he keeps porting to PC first)!

  2. Well, I used to sell cars. I would always ask people for list price for every new car. I found that the people who went ahead and made a deal without a whole lot of haggling were a lot happier with their purchase over all than the people who fought tooth and nail down to the last $5 of the purchase price. The fact is, it's a good deal if you can afford it, you are willing to pay the price, and you get the car you want. It doesn't matter if someone else got the car for $500 less.

How and why does that apply to this situation? The principle is the same. I was glad to pay $30 for the Windows version, even though I had to wait for it. I thought it was an excellent value for what I got. If someone else got it cheaper, why does that have to make me unhappy? Why can't I be happy for them that they got a good deal, and maybe we brough in a new user who will get addicted, and now have to buy Nethergate, Avernum 1-6, and Geneforge 1-5?

Frankly, even for the $9.99 price, I would hate to have to use the I-Pad version. I am so used to mouse and keyboard, that I think the game would lose some of its flavor for me. I also max out the resolution, and enjoy the more panoramic views.

I'm still happy with my purchase, though I do wish the Windows port could happen a little faster.

It seems to me that outrage in this matter may be a symptom of an attitude that will not serve well in any quest for inner peace. Oh well, some people are happier with outer outrage.

Avernum 4 was actually the first game I ever made any mods to, and mine are actually quite small. I just changed the sale prices and weights of a few items. (For example, a rock weighs a tenth of a pound and sells for 2000 coins, which makes it easy to pick up a lot of cash)

The only other one that I did was to get the Gypsy Blessing in A5. (When you tip the old gypsy who is playing music, instead of it costing you 5c, it gives you 30000c.) I forget where I learned that one. Somewhere here on the forums, I'm sure.

I've tried the Character Editors, but it just seems to easy to overpower the characters, and it takes all the challenge out of the game.
  4. Redbeard is Holklandan, but he is not as ugly as the rest of them. (That's the real reason for all the mask wearing anyway. It is not for anonymity. It is for shame at their hideousness.) Redbeard's non-ugliness caused him to be ridiculed as a child, and driven from his homeland. This also explains some of the animosity between him and Shadow Tarkus who used to torment him as a child by calling him "Pretty Boy".

On my next playthrough, I will have to go the archery way, and see about getting this 500+ damage of which you speak. I will call my Blademaster Robin of Locksley.
  6. I finally caught him, too. Ran away whenever I saw him start to move when at a camp, let him get just out of sight when walking his rounds (since by now, I know every step he takes). Finally caught him, and he has now "poof"ed away. Looking forward to seeing him dead some day soon. I think I'll cut his body to pieces and feed it to Jennel's pet wolf. This guy really annoyed me.

  7. Loved the rod of attraction, and wish I could get another one. I used the rat tail bundle, and stood back while my pet rat fough to the death with an enemy giant rat. Once I gave it a war blessing, it got the best of the other beast. Entertainment value only, of course.

  8. Of course, I also lay waste to whole towns in Avernum, because oppressing the weak is hilarious. I mean, ... I did it for population control.

And I was disappointed that I couldn't even try to kill that sorceress in the Kva lands after making a deal not to kill her. I was wishing for an "I changed my mind. Now that you have bribed me, I'm going to kill you anyway," dialogue option.

  9. I am the Hand of Avadon. Why should I not kill this upstart? Am I the only one who enjoys bringing the jack-booted heel of justice down upon the neck of those who would oppose the great and noble Redbeard?

  10. Am I the only one who misses seeing stairs/trapdoors on the mini-map? I hate getting somewhere and then thinking, "great, now where did I mislay that set of stairs to get back down to that locked door?"
