Personally, I started with A3. The graphics are nice enough and I acutally prefer them to the bulkier look of A4/5 and Geneforge. I thought about playing older versions as well, but since I understand Avernum to be an Exile remake, I decided against it. Plus, with A3-5 there is already so much content that it should last you a long time.

Is there some arbitrary limit on how often one can use essence pods to regain essence? In my current (demo) game, I used one, shaped a new creation, then wanted to use another to replenish my essence for combat. The log message (gains x essence) appears, but my essence stays at near-zero.

It isn't as bad as I remember it. Just send the money via PayPal, I hope that works as described.

The thing is, it messes with the secondary monitor when I have one monitor running a different resolution / colour depth. And on 21", fullscreen 1024 looks a lot worse than windowed 1024. But you're right, I'll try the demos again.

A while back I stumbled upon the Avernum series, more specificalls A3. Played a bit, but never had the time to finish it. Recently I'm feeling a bit nostalgic, and am thinking about purchasing the complete bundle, from A3 to A5 (and later A6). However, the last demo of A4 that I tried refused to run unless I set my desktop to exact specifications (800x600, 16bit) - which is a complete no-go for me. I prefer windowed in the case of low resolution games. Was that just the demo back then, or is that still the case? Does A5 suffer the same problem? A3 is able to run windowed no matter what the desktop settings are.
