  1. Well, if the "translation" ends up as weird foreign words that don't get translated, it's not very entertaining. What's entertaining is having a final translation that is in English words, but which says something bizarre/strange/silly.

  3. I think...tentatively, that I could be around to sub.
  4. Boregloaf just gets mightier and mightier. Yay for Selos! Also, yay for taking the shopping trips out of the regular sessions! Good call.
  5. I'm going to be busy toward the end of this week and most of next week and probably not on here as much, so I hope to confirm this soon. Can I be pretty sure Selos will meet again the evening of Friday, May 7? Just want to make sure to plan to be available. Thanks.
  6. Ditto Nikki. Nethergate Resurrection is my favorite game, and it is standalone.
  7. Nioca, you amuse me. Thank you.

  9. Interesting. Usually when I hear business discussed, people talk about how much easier it for the big corporations than for small business. The big corporations have various advantages and such. But this discussion seems to be suggesting the big game companies have extra difficulties that Jeff doesn't face, that it's easier for him working in the smaller scale. It's just an odd reversal, considering the usual stuff about economies of scale and such. / two more cents

Ehh...there are only so many stories to tell, methinks. "Innovation in terms of story," well, I'm not sure how possible that is. Just as with the game engine, the key is not to have an "original" story with a unique plot twist no one has ever heard of ever before in the history of stories. Even in storytelling the key is to do it well, not do it astoundingly originally. I'd argue that is what Jeff does. His stories are good not because they are groundbreaking literature that tell a story no one has ever imagined, but because they tell their stories well. Jeff is especially good at creating interesting atmosphere and settings, and varies somewhat in terms of plot and characters. But the key is that he does it well, not that he achieves some some standard of "originality."

  12. That's one of the best blog entry titles I've ever seen. LOL!!! The content of the blog, while not as cool as the title ( ) made a lot of sense. My two cents (which hopefully make sense, but won't make you any cents): Beyond the fixation on graphics and "technology," I think there is problem, in a variety of fields, with obsessing over newness. A good game is expected to be "new" and "innovative" and game reviews I read regularly mark off for a game being a "second edition" rather than a "true sequel" (or other such mumbo jumbo). They take a game that they admit is better than the original and rate it lower because it is not "original" or "innovative." I've seen it in academics (history) too, a fixation on finding something "new" and "innovative" to say, to the neglect of solidly learning and fine-tuning topics that have already been studied. This fascination with the new is present in other areas of life as well. "New" things are flashy and exciting; solidly improving older things is not. Moo.
  13. The Awakened-produced drakons that formed the Barrier of Winds could fly. I don't think they ever actually appear in the game, though; they're just described.
  14. Uh...calm down. Yes, the interface changes a LOT over the games. G2 is mostly the same as G1. G3 makes some notable changes, I think G4 changes more, and G5 has the most refined, not surprisingly. If you can't stand G1, you probably won't care for G2, so maybe try G4 or G4 (since they are generally considered to be all around better than G3, from what I've seen on here). I didn't think the G1 interface was that much different (i.e. "inferior") to the earlier Avernum games...

  18. No. There will be a new game. He mentioned little hints here and there (it will be something entirely new he's making up, it draws inspiration the opera Bluebeard, I think), but not much. Edit: promotion to Shock Trooper! Woohoo! LOL. It's taken over a year...

    Yay!

It really tough to figure out these cartoons when you can't read the stuff written in them. Kind of not fair. Number one is a post-Civil War cartoon (several little details seem to indicate that), such as all the references TO the war or postwar stuff (a ship called Alabama, a sign that I think says KKK, a reference to Jefferson Davis supposedly dressing as woman, etc). My guess would be something about...maybe U.S. Grant becoming president in the post-Civil War/Reconstruction era, and the mess he faced? I'll guess Number 2 is also something to do with the Grant presidency and the corruption associated with some members of that administration? Number 3 I'll guess has to do with political party/machine bosses, not mob bosses. The fourth...no idea.
  21. Rots were originally created by the rogue shaper Barzhal, I believe (G2). As were Drakons, and Gazers/Eyebeasts. BAD IDEA.
  22. You're welcome. It's for a good cause! They are saving the European airline industry!
  23. Whew. So I'm safe. I can't wait to see the volcano vs. penguins grudge match!!!
