I had the exact same problems when I tried to read the log. It's like...a rotten log.

Actually I think Jeff already said that he DIDN'T know Avadon resembled a Hebrew word when he picked it as a name...so he wasn't trying to name it after or avoid naming it after any such thing.

Courtesy of dictionary.com: dec·i·mate [des-uh-meyt] –verb (used with object), -mat·ed, -mat·ing. 1.to destroy a great number or proportion of: The population was decimated by a plague. 2.to select by lot and kill every tenth person of. 3.Obsolete . to take a tenth of or from. So it could really be used either way.

Maybe an open, completely connected world with a world map that allowed fast travel between locations?

So does that conclude all the interludes/epilogues? Did we get one for Esstra? I think I remember one for everyone else, but I'm not sure about her...

Try the reading the game logs on Eph's and Nioca's sites. They'll give you...a good sense of what the games are like and whether they, ah, fit your, ah...style.

AIMHack is basically a simple role-playing game system, designed by Ephesos. Instead of being for "tabletop" role-playing, however, this system was devised specially intended for play over instant messaging program (e.g. AIM, hence the name AIMHack). I believe Eph has said somewhere on his site that some aspects of the system were inspired by D&D. It is, at least from my point of view as a novice role-player, delightfully simple and easy to use.

Ehh...the forum-post-based RPGs I've seen here haven't impressed me in terms of how well they function. They seem to end up convoluted, bulbous, and unmanageable, and then they die a slow, agonizing death as people get bored and quit. Eph's AIMHack system seems to work much better, so if I do any role-playing here, it'll be through that. I wish you luck with your project, nonetheless. It just doesn't interest me.

Minor note: I think you meant that characters' thoughts should in italics, not cursive.

The first thing that I thought of with the scarabs was that they reminded me of the brooches from A1.

I know very little about NES games. First video game console my family ever had was the N64. I would have recognized the Zelda quote, but since Nioca already caught that... I must say I'm impressed by the variety in this mix of quotes. I tend to think of games from the NES as...very limited, and wouldn't have expected such variety. -

Intriguing! Having actual developed NPC as party members reminds me of course of Greta and Alwan in G3. I thought toting them around led to some interesting character interactions. I expect these characters will be substantially more developed, though. And new versions of the first Avernum trilogy? Hmm. I have been hoping Jeff would make universal/Intel-friendly versions of those games...I hope the upgrading process goes well and doesn't lose any of their old charm...
