Does it matter which town? Can I do at the Fort Saffron script, for instance?

When I was leveling up for Basalt Fortress in Mertis (Doing the Clearing the Spiral Quest) all of my characters where encumbered, so I dropped off all of my quest items at the back of some farmer guys house. I forget about them, and a long time later go to Patrick's Tower, and find two of the stolen books. I realize that I left the other three by Mertis, and dash back, only to find nothing. (I already have the quest, and really hate to have a quest lying around forever.) I am 99% sure that I left them there. Are there more than five books under the Tower? Is there a way to get back the missing items?
