Thanks. My keyboard does have a numpad, and I've got used to using it instead of the arrow keys (using the mouse is too boring - one of the reasons i like the games so much is that you can almost entirely rely on the keyboard).

Great idea We really did need a central downloading location for the editors, as they are scattered all over the forums.

The Geneforge Experiment : A Fangame of the Geneforge Series The development members, as of now, include Retsnom the Monster, MMXPERT and me. Anyone who wishes to join is welcome. Since we've already added the fyora graphics, we were thinking of putting him as the main character. The storyline hasn't been made yet (If you have any ideas, we would like to hear them). We won't be making only the final release public; the latest version of the project , at each stage of development, will always be available here for download (with screenshots). This way, everyone can review what we've done so far and suggest improvements. And though we are developing on a windows platform, the final release will be ported to the HTML 5 format. Download GExp 1.1 Version 1.1:- Smoothened out the fyora animation. Added ability to move in all(4) directions. Version 1.0:- Added the fyora graphics. Added left & right directions.

If that was the idea, we could just as well have, as you mentioned earlier, modified the existing game & added features / put in multiplayer functionality ; makes more sense than going to the trouble of first creating a perfect imitation and then putting in the extra code to do everything. My idea is far more humble*; we'll be doing a fangame. It will be platform-based (not top-down) and the central character will be a fyora** (and as such doesn't require any complex handling). These are just the main differences, and the rest (storyline included) will be made up as we go along - Remember, this is a fangame so there aren't any kind of rules or pre-written algorithms for the prospective program. Summing up where we've come to so far :- Originally Posted By: Spiderweb's 1st reply (MMXPERT) Spiderweb doubts the possibility of us succeeding, but I didn't get a yes/no answer, and they would risk too much by giving us the source code. 1) They would not have doubted it if they had seen this screenshot and the "experiment" which was posted earlier. 2) We won't touch the source code. We'll be creating a new game altogether. Originally Posted By: Spiderweb's 2nd reply (MMXPERT) Spiderweb thinks that failure of this is imminent, and will not grant permission for distribution because they think so. Meaning if they think it is possible, they may reconsider their decision and be a lot more supportive. In essence : Spiderweb's replies were almost neutral, and their denials had because's attached. They didn't say no outright. This is the best response we can hope for (until we produce some solid results), and I suggest we go ahead with our project . Everyone can contribute & as no programming skills are necessary. We won't be cracking/hacking the game & the CoC will be respected. But I don't want our future posts to be classified rebellious & squashed. So what does everyone have to say about this ?

Of course, I didn't mean to sound grouchy. Its not that I dislike SW (far from it), its just that I love the games too much and I'm a big fan. And I was, um, temporarily unhinged to hear that we would have to wait 2 years.
-
Maybe we can create a small sample & email it only to Spiderweb. And then let them decide whether we should go ahead or not. Missed all the action again. These kind of things seem to happen only when I'm not around. And I didn't get to read those original posts either :sulk:

I do hope not, 2 years is eons ahead. You've no idea how frustrating it is to see all these screenshots & videos, and dicussions going on in the forums but not being able to play the game. SW should have put more effort into ensuring the release dates of the Win & Mac coincide. Or at least that the difference doesn't exceed a month or two. Then we would all play the game together, and everyone is happy. What's happening now is the Win users are always left feeling secondly-placed. The more so because, in the forums everyone is clubbed together irrespective of the OS. Windower: "Hurray! The new version is out! Can't wait to play!" Maccie: "Huh? But the new version only gets released next month." Windower: "Actually, I was referring to Avernum One." Maccie: "Oh, that. But of course, you're on a Windows (sympathetic expression).Well, happy playing and all, but let me tell you that Avernum One is nothing compared to Avernum Three Hundred And Fifty Five, which I just finished yesterday. In fact, why don't you take a look at the screenshots...........?" Windower: (starts to cry) Forgive the exaggeration, but you get the idea.

Thats all right, just don't consider them as servants. It would be great to have a group of seven shapers from the council, going on a rebel rampage.
-
Thats the thing; I don't move to the corners, but to the sides. It makes movement difficult, as with the isometric game setup the doors are located in the directions pointing to the corners. Thanks anyway.I guess I'll wait for the Windows remake.

Very nice. Didn't feel any difference with the drayks, though. But that must be because I'm using the DirectX version.
-
hey, isn't there anybody here who has tried out both the games ? Please help, I really want to play it.
-
I've made a small game (well, experiment, rather) using the Geneforge graphics.Do try it out, irrespective of your views on the licensing part - it does not modify your game in any way as it is an independent program. This was just to check whether the idea is workable. Its chippy and patchy, but if everyone gets together and works on the graphics, we can produce a masterpiece (No programming required). What I did realize was that customizing the game is very, very difficult. What we can do is to create a new multiplayer fan-game using the Geneforge graphics. -------------------------- Controls Arrow left : Move left Arrow right : Move right -------------------------- (If Spidweb says "Remove", this post will be removed, forgotten about & I'll concentrate on finding a way into Oghrym'Tor.) (Windows : Size about 1.3 Mb) Download Experiment

What about ornks, which are used as food ? Surely thats unethical too. Shapers take the trouble of creating ornks, only to have them killed later so they can take the meat. (so an ornk consists of "meat" made of essence, so why not create "meat" directly in the first place ? )
-
Wow, you can modify SDFs using shift+d ?! I thought the function was purely for cheat codes. Can you do this with all the games G1-G5?
-
Point well taken. But its not about creating anything new, the idea is to augment Geneforge's entertainment value and provide fans a completely new gaming experience. Many of us are experienced Geneforge players, we know the games top to bottom, and we are tired. I mean, we've done 100%, there's nothing else and the series is over. But I can't leave the game; I'm still hooked on to it.Which is why I'm doing things like (I'm such a rebel) making my fyoras spit acid, and vlish cast charm's. And you're right about it being illegal. I seriously doubt whether Spiderweb will show the same delightfully lenient (even supportive) attitude it has shown towards script-edits and trainers.
-
I would love to do it too. Why dont we all get together and do something to keep the game alive ? You've got to have some technical knowledge of how the game works, then you must know how to inject your custom code into the game files (I know neither, but maybe somebody does). The game was apparently written in C/C++/Java, judging by the script files. I once took a peek at the BoE source code, and it made me feel dizzy. Wonder what Geneforge's will be like.

A 2-player game shouldn't make too much of a difference to the Geneforge engine. It would just have to share the coordinates of the players and creations between the two games. Btw, there have been instances where a game which was meant to be played as single-player was modified by fans and transformed into a multiplayer game.

Whats the difference between online & MMORPG? Is it like, instead of having all players connect to a centralized server on the Spiderweb site, each player can choose to host/join a game ?

Gazer in Lermans Pass - Unfair or Extremely Unfair[G5]
BMA replied to Quazicore's topic in Geneforge Series
No, I meant that a Gazer refers to itself as "We".I dont remember which game exactly, but it must be G2 or G3. Something like Shaper : "Who are you ?" Big Eye : "We are the mighty Big Eye. We see everything." Of course, its just an example; you get the idea. -
Gazer in Lermans Pass - Unfair or Extremely Unfair[G5]
BMA replied to Quazicore's topic in Geneforge Series
I think Gazers have the "Eye" suffix too. They've all got a lot of eyes, and each of them refers to itself in the plural. You would think that each gazer was composed of several beings put together. (which, of course, is not the case. Arrogant creatures. )
