The Albhabet is chasing us!
BMA replied to Dark Sniper's topic in Blades of Avernum
What is all this about ? -
Thanks, I got into the basement (how could I have missed that entrance?!) and rescued the family too. The scenario was good, I enjoyed playing it.

In fact I was surprised that Avadon didn't have it, seeing that it is equally mouse-reliant.

I'm playing the mystery manor with a newly made party. I've got two journals, the second of which told me there's a third one in the basement (along with a vortex). But I can't find any way into the basement. I went upstairs too, but didn't find anything though I scanned almost every wall for hidden passages. I haven't seen any of the vortexes so far. I did find some locked doors, but I can't unlock or bash them as I have a fresh party (I was thinking, as this is a puzzle scenario which has no combat, my party level wouldn't matter). Where is the basement? Where is the first vortex ? Should I have brought in a better party?

The folder you're referring to just contains the shortcuts of the game and not any actual game data (try disabling start menu shortcuts in the installer, if there's such an option). If these suggestions weren't enough, tell us which drive & folder you were trying to install to.

I'm no fan of the new tree system. Too few options and way too complex (but then, Geneforge seems to have become my benchmark). I remember one of Jeff's blogs, he had said that he didn't want players to create a party which would get stuck in the middle of the game (since this had happened in Avernum), which I suppose is why he decided to 'even' out the skills. So that even if you are a newcomer who takes all the wrong choices, you'd still be able to play it. No idea about Aeftp, though.

I don't think we can be anything but hands. Its an adventure game after all, and the kind of work the eyes and hearts do is too static.

@Slarty (Slartucker?) I just saw you've got a whole lot of comics based on some members here, and TM figures nicely in many of them !!! In fact, I didn't know you were of such a jovial type; you always seemed to be very serious and all!!! As for the comics, they are really very good and it's nice to see the mods all cartooned-up (why have you stopped ?). In fact, after seeing those comics I'm not afraid of any mod any longer!!!

Yes, it was very entertaining. I've always played a loyalist too, but I might try a hand at being a rebel once I finish with the first Avernum trilogy.

You must excuse my bringing this up again (and it's not like I always harp on history), but I've been really fascinated with the Terror's Martyr. Can't get him out of my head. Pity he was before my time, and I couldn't meet him. I just searched him up, and it turns out that the very first result that Google can give me is Terror's Martyr University, which is related to BoE/A. He must have been a very interesting fellow indeed, if he was banned multiple times. I was thinking, what if he pops back in again, or what if an existing member suddenly declares himself to be TM ("Hi everyone, I'm the old TM you know, and I must say, it's really very nice to be back on these boards" ?) Would he recieve a grand welcome from everyone who knew him, or be immediately thrown out ?

Sure the website's okay, but why all the suspense with a ticking timer ? Its just a basic website after all with no downloads and a couple of pages. On the other hand, Spiderweb could put this suspense strategy to good use; let a timer be made on the main page, which ticks down to the precise instant when a new game is released for download. Tension,Suspense,Wonder. The emotional overload would get the gamers flocking in.

I think it's nice to know that you can attack any person you want, if you feel like doing it. Someone said a while ago that you were capable of picking up useless things which is, well, a useless option. When I think about it, I feel sure that it's the same case. I mean, its always there, and doesn't hurt. When you dislike someone and want to whack him, you can imagine yourself to have 'spared' his life. That's better than knowing that you can't do anything about it anyway.

That's good to hear. I was sighing that my good old Geneforge is dead, and it being 'not avernum' would never be remade. But why would Jeff always want to resurrect a dead game every chance he gets (almost), instead of using the time to start on another story? I suppose he likes his games too much?
-
I saw the first Geneforge from a demo-collection too. It had a *lot* of games, and I was sifting through them all (mostly yawny ones) when I found this little gem. My eyes lit up in fascination as I saw the very I was drawn by the image you have displayed above. Though the actual game has no resemblance to that image, I liked it very much, and much better than the FPS games of the time. PS : Interesting mystery topic ?

So the mods are all men (apparently; as far as I can see) except Lady J? Hm, I wonder how many ladies are on these boards.

As for picking things up, dont we need a bit of trivia for the games? - doesn't hurt and keeps us comfortable. Its a void-filler; better have something useless than have nothing at all.

Being in a university myself, I can see your point. But the thing is, when someone says RPGs you imagine a magical world with spells and swords, surrounded with fantastic creatures or a future-based sci-fi theme. Though the term expands to 'role-playing' (which is very generally put), it has slowly acquired such a fixed definition in the minds of most players. The kind of games you're referring to look like they belong to the simulation category (imitating real life), rather than being true RPGs. I think you should try The Sims 2 University.

Mods are elected? I thought *i (isn't that Big J?) appointed them directly.

I'm sure I met a Doomguard somewhere; quite possibly it was in Avernum 3(or was it BoA?). And it looks like a Demon (duh).
