I had fallen into the habit of comparing every game with Geneforge, and so when I saw Avadon I was filled with an intense, un-explainable dislike.
But when I got over it, I found that Avadon is a fine game after all, and I played it with gusto. I didn't find it to be too difficult.

Are only the scripts modified, so this will work on the windows version too?

Farewell, Frozen Feet.
Sad that I didn't get to meet you, and we probably never will, but life's like that and that sort of thing.
Nice farewell post. I want to write one like this if I ever leave the community, but I guess it'll be a long time before I tire of computer games.

The big man, who has peacefully slept his way through most of the action outside wakes up with a start. Just in time, for the spiderwebbers are returning from their mission. He helps them in, and cheers and whoopees with everyone else when the oncoming mob is defeated with the leth ray.
He considers meeting with the retreating Desperance army, but doesn't when BJ Earles advises against it. Memory when magically tampered with, says BJ, is highly unstable and can easily revert to its original state.
He settles down cross-legged on the floor, takes a slice of cake from The Ratt and gets Dikiyoba, Actaeon and Nikki to recount their Desp adventure.

You can also modify the game's memory and turn any of your creations (or even the main character) into any other character in the game, including townsmen, rats, shades, shapers and human warriors.
It makes for interesting gameplay. If you are a rebel, you can be a drakon with an army of serviles.

The big man is sulking away at the back of the bus, for he has nothing else to do. Enough of inactivity, he thinks. He starts jumping up and down inside the bus making a nice awful noise, pulling faces, screaming like a banshee and in general trying to make as much of a nuisance of himself as is possible.
Big Man: Start the bus! Start the bus! Start the bus! Or I will HUFF and I will PUFF and I will BLOOWWW the bus down! What's the holdup ? Come ONNN start the bus!!!

Why is there a Character Editor option in the main menu at all, if its only function is to switch the in-game editor on?

On the same note, what if you kill the enemy in a quest before the quest was actually given to you? Will you still be able to take the quest and its reward later ?

Being able to minimize the info and minimap screens is a relatively recent addition to SW games...I like that very much.
But the text area for Avernum does get a bit annoying at lower resolutions. It blocks the view, and there's no way to close it.

But I don't see why the manual should be missing in the Steam version.
Oh well. *shrugs*

Are you on Windows?
You can use a hex editor (like PS Pad, you can download it off the web) to shorten the cheats by modifying the game's .exe file. Like, you can convert the cheat to just "i" so it makes for easier typing.

1)Ugh. I wouldn't use a carcass to defend myself.
It would be rather impolite too, considering it was the same mod who saved me from the wolves earlier.
2)Randomizer, with a new sanity welcome.
3)I haven't seen the bad side of any mod, so I'm not sure.
Been waiting for a bit of spice to spark the boards up, and -whoosh- here it is.
Hm, its interesting to imagine what each of the mods' reactions will be to this topic. -

Big Man: Yes Dikiyoba, I want to see the Arena too.
Dikiyoba and the big man enter the arena. They watch in awe as Muhammad Ali, a horrendous creature with abilities so powerful and spells so spectacular that they would make a horde of vahnatai mages cry out in shame, single-handedly claws and blasts its way through an assortment of rock golems, demons and vorpal bunnies. It manages to defeat all of the other monsters without so much as a scratch on its tail, and wins the championship.
The onlookers clap enthusiastically.
The crowds disperse, and everyone makes a beeline for Muhammad’s master’s autograph. Rolling their eyes, Dikiyoba and the big man wander around the stadium. When nearing the exit, they spot a small cave which looks like it leads to the underground. It is guarded by a beefy looking man with a big moustache.
Beefy: Sorry folks, this leads to the Titan Arena, where archmages from all over come with the most powerful monsters they’ve summoned and battle it out. Commoners are not allowed, and you need a VIP pass to enter. No pass, no entry.
Dikiyoba looks at Beefy coldly. The big man puffs his chest out and glares at him.
Big Man: We are friends of Slarty.
Beefy pales when he hears Slarty's name. He shrinks. He withers like an overly thirsty plant. He has no problem at all, he assures them, no problem at all. He bows like a servile, hands them a couple of free popcorn packets and ushers them in. The big man grabs a chair right away, but Dikiyoba says that they should inform the others too. They go back to the bus.
Big Man : Hey everyone, did you see the Arena ? I think it’s the best part of 1998! You really should see it, you know, if you haven’t already! Dikiyoba and I are going to the Titan Arena now, come join us!
They go back to the Titan Arena and comfortably sit back with their popcorn to enjoy the show.

Glad you could sort it out.

Edit : Your other topic wasn't a technical issue.

I see. Was it the graphics drivers that were out of date, or the game setup ?
-
I have experienced screen flickering only when I play games that are beyond my computer's capacity. But that is not the case over here. I have the same configuration as yours approximately but I've not been having any problems, though mine is a 32-bit system.

If this doesn't help, watch for new drivers to be released for your card.
It can also be that you are having problems with OpenGL graphics. You can try the DirectX version.

Did this help ? Maybe someone else over here can give you more information.
-
Which other Spiderweb games did you try to play, but had the same problem (did none of the games work, even the earliest Avernum games)?
Tell us your processor frequency (in Ghz) and the RAM you've got. Are you using a 32 or 64 bit version of Windows?
See your system rating (by pressing windows-key + pause, and click on Windows Experience Index). You'll find your Gaming Graphics subscore (a number from 1 to 7.9).

The big man looks up from his game. He understands little of what is going on, but he catches a fleeting reference to what he hears as Kama Sutra, and he is awed at seeing the legendary fluffy turtles.
Big Man: Fluffy Turtles! So they do exist!
He watches with interest as Jewels feeds the turtles.
Big Man: Hmmm, so that is how you do it.
The big man carefully repeats the procedure. After completing the ritual, he has a slightly dazed expression on his face and totters around for a couple of minutes, but he soon gets over it. He grins at everyone in the bus. He is feeling extraordinarily happy and light-headed, like he doesn't have a care in the world. He leans back in his seat and stretches his legs out, feeling very comfortable.
-
I watched both of them when I was a little kid, and I literally rolled all over the floor laughing.
Yeah, the first was loads better than the second, though.

Hey, thanks a lot.

I thought you were pulling my leg at first, but I got the download. If SW had already uploaded the setup file, why didn't they mention it? Anyway, I felt really smart nicking it out of Spiderweb's servers (hehehehehe).
Thanks again, and I look forward to enjoying the game.

I had lost my SW forum password about three years ago. I went through the forgotten-password procedure, but instead of getting a link to set up a new one, I was sent a rather ugly randomly generated password. The email said that I could use this new password temporarily, while my old password would work as well.
I have been using that new one (something like iQrCFgE) for many years now (don't even remember what it is, I just copy it out of my inbox). Is there any way I can set up a new forum password of my own liking ?
