  1. In Avernum 1, Heroic Brew is pretty kick-ass. For the toughest battles, a good substitute for Divine Warrior.
  2. Heh, I probably exaggerated a little. I'm still near the beginning of chapter 2, so 20 coin things sell for about 12-13, which is still worth it. Even with collecting everything 20+, I only do 2-3 trips per medium-sized dungeon. In terms of item storing, I just had to "clean" out (i.e. make sure there are no other items) a space once, and then it stays clean for the rest of the game. The storage spots are next to where I would sell items anyway, so it doesn't actually add much time at all to a loot run (and I don't run across storable items every dungeon anyway). These OCD things in general don't add much time (note-taking SAVES a lot of time), with the sole exception of wall-humping, which will probably be made obsolete when I get Far Sight. I just find it funny how I am not an OCD person in real life, but in Avernum, you can definitely interpret it that way.
  3. After the Save-Happy thread, I got to thinking; Avernum is pretty much one of the most obsessive-compulsive games I've played. Besides saving, there's: - Obsessive wall-checking. I swear, it's like I can't rest until I hump every single wall in the area. I can't keep going forward until I know there's no undiscovered secret behind me. - Obsessive loot gathering. I usually set a minimum value for collecting loot to sell (right now anything 20+ in value), and I absolutely cannot leave anything above that value behind. If my guys' inventory is full, I MUST return to town and sell off all my junk before continuing. I'll also feel quite uneasy if I know I left valuable loot behind on the floor. That just makes me feel... icky. - Obsessive item storing. Right now, I have to save every cursed item I find, and at least 1 of every item that I feel may come in handy later (like eggs in A2, which I feel will be a quest sooner or later). I pile the cursed items + stored items separately in Formello. I make it so that pressing "G" will not hit anything except for the given pile (and not some merchant's inventory, or a loose rock or something). It drives me nuts when a rock comes up amongst my stored items. Really. - Obsessive note-taking. I started this halfway through A1, and I've pretty much perfected a system for A2. I make a list of: Completed Dungeons, Uncompleted Dungeons/Towns (and even if it's just a book I can't read, the whole dungeon is uncomplete), Herb-picking locations, Skill-training Locations, Item Storage Locations and Weird Stuff (those random three letter words seen on a few obelisks and such). I cycle back and forth between Notepad and Avernum constantly. So yeah, this game series is just one big OCD trip. And I like it, dammit!
  4. Cool, thanks. Another question, does anyone know exactly how much of a damage bonus strength gives (by itself)? And does Dexterity give a defense bonus by itself, or only as a part of raising the Defense stat?
  5. Cotra was the third town I went to in all of Avernum, so I had those murders on my mind for a LONG time. It probably is the Scimitar, as Rent speculated, though. At least that's what I'm gonna tell myself so that I can sleep at night. (die Empire scum)
  6. Did anyone else find Demonslayer to be pretty underwhelming? My main fighter with 10 levels of Assassination usually did 50-95 damage per attack with any decent weapon, and all Demonslayer did was add 20-30 when fighting demons. I mean, that's not much more than, say, the Ice Sword, which typically adds 5-15 when fighting almost anything and has almost the same base damage. AND it lets you equip a shield.

Sometimes by the time he notices his huge error, he's already saved again. Five times. I guess I'm similar, except the hazardous circumstances save is always in a new slot, and then the next "safe" save is also in a new slot. Also, after a massive round of level-ups and skill training --> new slot.
  8. Thanks for the replies, guys. Does anyone know which one- Intelligence or Priest/Mage Spells- raises spell power more? I've been wondering that since Avernum 1, and I have no idea. I can't even tell if either actually raises spell power at all, but I guess I'll take the game's word for it. Also, does Anatomy actually increase damage against humanoids? I never noticed a difference, even with 5 levels, but because of the randomizer, it's really hard to tell.

Saving in different slots really seems a little odd to me, and why the heck do you do that whenever you enter a town? What do you do towards the end of A1 or A2, when you have to run from one end of Avernum to the other, constantly passing through Almaria etc.? Poor hard drive! You should join the club of those who collect skulls and trash, maybe you'll feel less alone with them. Heh, sorry, I should clarify. I save under a different slot when entering a town/dungeon for the first time. So before entering Dungeon X, I'll have Save 43, but Dungeon X will have its own Save 44. I guess I'm paranoid that I won't be able to leave or something (this has actually happened a couple of times, so I feel somewhat justified). And while I don't collect skulls or trash, I do have a morbid fascination with collecting Cursed items. In Avernum 1, I had probably 30+ cursed items right outside the door of Leith's place in Blosk (which was my main storage area).
  10. I tend to save after almost anything happens, to the point where it's verging on OCD. The game has a lot of ways to just randomly kill you, and I'd feel naked without a save within the last 5-10 minutes. I also tend to save in a new slot for a new town/dungeon, which means I accumulated 100+ saves for Avernum 1 alone. I have occasionally gone into alternate history timelines, where I have one save seeing what happens if I kill everyone, in say, Silvar. Is anyone else as screwed up as I am? Or I am just a freak?
  11. Hey all, I've recently begun Avernum 2, and it seems like the whole combat engine is pretty much the same. But just to make sure, are there any notable differences? I'm pretty much just building up my party as I did in Avernum 1, and the only difference I've noticed so far is that Mana is only 3x Int/Priest/Mage, instead of 4x. Is Assassination still as good as it used to be? Does Strength actually affect damage now, or is it still a tiny effect? Does Hardiness affect encumbrance with regards to wearing armor and AP available? Any info would be appreciated, thanks.
  12. Ooh, interesting idea Rent-an-Ihrno. It is cool that there a lot of flavor elements in the game. I've just started Avernum 2, and I LOVE the mention of the half-built hot spring spa around the Motrax area. Nice shout out to a very insignificant A1 quest. Still, woulda been nice if the double murder had a resolution; smaller things I don't mind there being loose ends, but this one nagged at me a bit.
  13. So I'm pretty close to finishing the game now (2 of 3 major quests complete, and all I have to do now is get through the Final Gauntlet), and I still have no idea how to solve the murders in Cotra. Talking to Scab gives you a dialogue option to ask him about it, but that leads to nowhere. Is this just an intentional loose end, or can it be tied up?
  14. Thanks Ishad! I couldn't get into that guy's tower the first time, until I started messing around and drank the pool water first. It's kinda weird how this quest is set up, because Khoth himself made no mention of needing to go up to see that guy, and he's the guy who made the barrier in the first place.
