  1. I don't think this thread is too old to revive. I'm on this quest now. Is that the right answer, that you just have to stay alive long enough? This doesn't seem to work. Is the number of rounds you have to wait really, really large? Attacking the blue-illuminated pylon doesn't seem to do anything.

  2. I am confused about Ward of Elements. Fire is an element, in the relevant sense, but I am pretty sure that most fire does physical damage. What damage does WoE protect against? Is it just damage that is specifically described as "magical"? Or does it also protect against fire, air...?

The question is, would you rather think, "Oh, so that's why things turned out the way they did!" or would you rather think "I wonder what eventually happens."

I will say that if you play 4 and 5 and then 6, you will know where some things are before they are revealed during 6. This may or may not reduce your enjoyment of the game depending on how you feel about such things.
  4. I'm playing version 1.0.1. I am in the Formello sewers, and just defeated Sneaky-Tortureguy-Whatshisname. I returned to the cell that has the terrified Nephil in it. We discussed the Fang Clan and so on, and I told him to come with me. He began leading me toward the exit, but then suddenly stopped and won't go any further. I tried talking to him, but he just says No time! Run! Mrrr! Isn't he supposed to go all the way to the stairs with me, or does he just stand there? I went back to a save and had the whole discussion again, and he stopped in the same place.

  5. The only things I don't like about the UI in this game are that 1) when I click on a item on the ground or in a cabinet, it automatically jumps into the inventory of the selected character instead of letting me place it where I want it and 2) the exact health and magic points remaining are not shown on the main screen. I'm still liking the game a lot, though.

I didn't even notice the window size or dragon stuff you are talking about. I think I like the dragons, they make the screen look more fantasy-gamey.

  6. Thank you. Am I supposed to be able to enter Fort Duvno at this point? I don't seem to have orders to do so. I think this game is too big for my brain.

Edit: Let me phrase this another way. Is there any point in this game where I can make a non-obvious mistake that will permanently deny me access to any entire fort, town, or city? And by non-obvious, I mean as long as I don't kill everyone in the Castle or stop accepting any quests or something equally ridiculous.

  7. Are there any timed quests in this game? Have I already asked this? If I have, sorry.

Specifically, I just blew up Cotra (which was great, by the way -- all that was missing was a dialogue option for "you fool, this place is gonna blow!" followed by the enemy sliths running from the city alongside my party).

I've done some of the Silvar quests, and cleared out Fort Avernum, but haven't been to Duvno or Dranlon. But, now I have the quest to go upriver to Formello. Can I clean up the Eastern Gallery without losing out on the Formello quests?

I am pretty sure I can, but, y'know, lots of time invested already.

  8. I hate posting these "how do I find stuff" questions, but I double-hate playing the same fight for an hour. I suppose someone else in the world will have this problem.

So, between the Tower colony and Mertis, behind a Fang Clan outpost, there is a bunch of undead, first in the outer corridors of a building and then in the center structure. Inside that center structure, the undead are unkillable, they just keep reforming and a message says that they are being powered from somewhere. Well, where is the power source???

Or, is the power source in the Spiral and I have go in there first?

The Avernum games I've played (4, 5, part of 3, still working on 6) seem a lot easier for a casual gamer than the Geneforges I've played (4 & 5). I got through A4 and 5 the first time, but I've never been able to finish G5, even after adjusting the scripts to jack up my character. I'm not sure I finished G4 without cheating either. Don't think so.

So anyway, Geneforge seems to require a lot more attention to min-maxing which I hate and suck at, so maybe that's another reason Avernum would be more popular.
  10. I got this quest from Lark in the Castle, I'm supposed to get blighted mushroom samples from four locations. I've been just about everywhere in the Great Cave now, and I don't see any blighted mushrooms I can pick up.

I do remember, early on when I was walking to Gnass for the first time, some text about seeing some blighted mushrooms. But I didn't pick anything up and nothing was added to my Special Items. Where the heck are the mushrooms I'm supposed to find?
