I don't think this thread is too old to revive. I'm on this quest now. Is that the right answer, that you just have to stay alive long enough? This doesn't seem to work. Is the number of rounds you have to wait really, really large? Attacking the blue-illuminated pylon doesn't seem to do anything.

I think it's more rewarding to play a role-playing game in an ethically consistent way. You don't have to do anything for Gladwell in order to complete the game. There are many, many opportunities to get cool stuff and experience.

A6 -Playing Singleton: Resisting Freezing by Basilisks

A6 -Playing Singleton: Resisting Freezing by Basilisks

Yet when you encounter basilisks, you often find stone statues that were once alive. I guess our characters are too tough to be turned to stone. -
I am confused about Ward of Elements. Fire is an element, in the relevant sense, but I am pretty sure that most fire does physical damage. What damage does WoE protect against? Is it just damage that is specifically described as "magical"? Or does it also protect against fire, air...?

A6 - What's the deal with the lightning?
madrigan replied to americanaustralian's topic in Second Avernum Trilogy
I thought I would ask this here instead of starting a new thread. I see that I have to fight the Cackling Demon three times. That sounds good, but where the heck is he now? I chased him out of his first cave hideout and I haven't seen him since. -
Thanks everybody. I went upstairs and he appeared after a few rounds. That cultist in the first room is tougher than she looks.

I will say that if you play 4 and 5 and then 6, you will know where some things are before they are revealed during 6. This may or may not reduce your enjoyment of the game depending on how you feel about such things.

I'm playing version 1.0.1. I am in the Formello sewers, and just defeated Sneaky-Tortureguy-Whatshisname. I returned to the cell that has the terrified Nephil in it. We discussed the Fang Clan and so on, and I told him to come with me. He began leading me toward the exit, but then suddenly stopped and won't go any further. I tried talking to him, but he just says No time! Run! Mrrr! Isn't he supposed to go all the way to the stairs with me, or does he just stand there? I went back to a save and had the whole discussion again, and he stopped in the same place.

The only things I don't like about the UI in this game are that 1) when I click on a item on the ground or in a cabinet, it automatically jumps into the inventory of the selected character instead of letting me place it where I want it and 2) the exact health and magic points remaining are not shown on the main screen. I'm still liking the game a lot, though. I didn't even notice the window size or dragon stuff you are talking about. I think I like the dragons, they make the screen look more fantasy-gamey.

There are a bunch of them there, and it seems to me I've seen them a few other places.

But you can get a small reward from the mayor of Mertis just for finding the gate, so check in with him.

Those aren't the eggs you're looking for. The eggs you want look sort of like big white croissants. But they look exactly like useless "bits of husk," so make sure you are collecting the right things.

Thanks everybody. So you go to Duvno after you go to Formello?

Thank you. Am I supposed to be able to enter Fort Duvno at this point? I don't seem to have orders to do so. I think this game is too big for my brain. Edit: Let me phrase this another way. Is there any point in this game where I can make a non-obvious mistake that will permanently deny me access to any entire fort, town, or city? And by non-obvious, I mean as long as I don't kill everyone in the Castle or stop accepting any quests or something equally ridiculous.

Are there any timed quests in this game? Have I already asked this? If I have, sorry. Specifically, I just blew up Cotra (which was great, by the way -- all that was missing was a dialogue option for "you fool, this place is gonna blow!" followed by the enemy sliths running from the city alongside my party). I've done some of the Silvar quests, and cleared out Fort Avernum, but haven't been to Duvno or Dranlon. But, now I have the quest to go upriver to Formello. Can I clean up the Eastern Gallery without losing out on the Formello quests? I am pretty sure I can, but, y'know, lots of time invested already.

There are some passages that open automatically, as Thuryl said, but you don't need to walk around bashing into everything like in A3 for example.

A6 - Dancing Bones quest (medium-sized spoilers)
madrigan replied to madrigan's topic in Second Avernum Trilogy
Thanks everybody. I did search for a pre-existing thread before posting, but the search doesn't always seem to work. I did find that differently-colored undead, but didn't realize that he was different from the others aside from being tougher. -
I hate posting these "how do I find stuff" questions, but I double-hate playing the same fight for an hour. I suppose someone else in the world will have this problem. So, between the Tower colony and Mertis, behind a Fang Clan outpost, there is a bunch of undead, first in the outer corridors of a building and then in the center structure. Inside that center structure, the undead are unkillable, they just keep reforming and a message says that they are being powered from somewhere. Well, where is the power source??? Or, is the power source in the Spiral and I have go in there first?

Didn't the A3 character editor let you give yourself items and spells? I wonder why the A5 and A6 editors aren't like that. I can give a character level 30 in mage casting but I can't give him Cloak of Bolts.
-
I am supposed to clear out the Great Cave and the Abyss before going to Mertis and the Eastern Gallery, right? I can't believe how many quests there on in this game. It makes it much harder to prioritize. But there don't seem to be any timed quests, so I guess I can flail about as much as I need.

A6 - Finding mushrooms? (very minor spoilers)

I got through A4 and 5 the first time, but I've never been able to finish G5, even after adjusting the scripts to jack up my character. I'm not sure I finished G4 without cheating either. Don't think so. So anyway, Geneforge seems to require a lot more attention to min-maxing which I hate and suck at, so maybe that's another reason Avernum would be more popular.

I got this quest from Lark in the Castle, I'm supposed to get blighted mushroom samples from four locations. I've been just about everywhere in the Great Cave now, and I don't see any blighted mushrooms I can pick up. I do remember, early on when I was walking to Gnass for the first time, some text about seeing some blighted mushrooms. But I didn't pick anything up and nothing was added to my Special Items. Where the heck are the mushrooms I'm supposed to find?
