  1. Two huge and appalling (to me) threats to democracy in the US: unlimited corportate cash, and gerrymandering. How can these things be allowed? Yes, I know about Citizens United; what I don't understand is why there hasn't been more of an uproar about it. Like riots in the streets. And letting state parties essentially rig congressional elections seems to be a fine old tradition in the States. There are other ways to go about redistricting.
  2. Yes, exactly. I was just hoping that there was a way to keep the sound going, similar to how the animations keep moving even when in-game time isn't passing. But apparently it's more trouble than it's worth, so we'll just have to imagine the roar of the waterfall. Oh well, we don't play BoA for the realism.
  3. And I wouldn't have the vaguest idea how to do that anyway. OK, it was just a thought. It seems that a big part of learning to design in BoA is coming to terms with what you can't do. Thanks.
  4. Is it possible to play a sound in a continuous loop, in a town? Over and above the background sounds, I mean. It's easy to play it every turn, but then it stops when the party stops moving, which ruins the effect.
  5. Those wolves are pretty tough. IIRC, they're facing south. If you approach them from the northeast, near the chasm, you can often get them to come at you one at a time. Even if all of them do come at you, it's narrow enough there to retreat so that only one can get at you. Your healer should be able to keep up with the damage while everybody else goes on offense. Also, I seem to remember them as being charmable.
  6. Ah, fast. That would be it then. I'm glad I didn't go ahead and re-download (dial-up, one phone line). Thanks.
  7. Terrain animation does not seem to work in BoA for me. I don't mean just when I try to do it, I mean at all. Standard torches and fire pits are supposed to be animated, right? I can see how they're supposed to look, in Avernum 2 for example, but in BoA they're static. Same with custom terrains that I know are supposed to be animated. I've got Mac version 1.2.1. Is my copy buggy or is this a Mac issue, or what? I've checked the settings and I don't see anything applicable, except maybe special effects, which is turned on anyway. My operating system is Mac OS X v 10.4.8 if that helps. Thanks.
  8. Too bad, I guess I'll have to muddle through on my own until or unless someone makes a Mac version. I can't complain; it's amazing how many good utilities are out there already.
  9. OK, I think I'm understanding you. And in this example, s would be defined in the dialogue script variables? I've found a few examples in town scripts for things like "So-and-so has just learned a level of Create Illusions." and so forth. I'll play around with these until I get it through my head. Thanks for the explanation, Niemand. :-)
  10. Ah. That would explain why it isn't done more often. My understanding is that the string buffer replaces any strings that were already in the node, but I assume you can make its activation conditional, say on an SDF? (Please remember that I'm not a programmer.) If anyone can remember a scenario in which this is done, I would find it extremely helpful to be able to look at it in practice. Thanks for the quick reply.
  11. I know there's a way to insert a PC's name into dialogue, but I can't remember where I've seen it done. And I can't find any reference to it in the docs. Help, please?
  12. My father immigrated to Canada and served in the army during WW II himself, though he never went overseas. My mother's family has been here since the sixteenth century. Her uncle Mervyn was an army scout--he didn't like to talk about that either. Her uncle Mickey was an air force tailgunner. He was killed when his plane was hit while crossing the North Sea. They actually made it to British soil and crashed in a farmer's field. I'm told there's a memorial there to this day. I never met Mickey (obviously), but that's who I think about during the silence. I've tried to find anyone in my family who served in WW I, but it seems everyone was the wrong age.
  13. I've sent my reports to the contest gmail.
  14. Complete all of Gladwell's quests then kill him. Complete 2 the two of Mel's quests that align with the interests of Avernum: scourge and darkside loyalists. Leave Melanchion alive. Outcome the same as option #1.
  15. Never having done this before, I don't know if there's a usual format involved. I assume reasonably detailed explanations are called for, but do we assign an overall score, break it down by categories, rank scenarios in order, or just pick our choice for winner?
  16. Yes, it's the latest version. It's probably me doing something wrong. Adding a couple of rows of pixels and then painting them fixed the problem, but if there's an easier way...I'll send a cmg to the gmail listed in the Adjuster.
  17. Hm. Well, if that would work, then painting the edges with the background white should work too, but it doesn't. It must be something to do with copying and pasting from Photoshop to Graphic Adjustor. I saw this same problem in Magus of Cattalon, by Smoo. Has anyone else had to deal with this? Or is there a good guide to making graphics?
  18. Now, if anyone has any tips on how to avoid this effect: I'd love to hear them. Thanks.
  19. No, those didn't work for me either, but a gif did. Thanks, all.
  20. 1. Use Graphic Adjuster (thank you, Niemand) to open the terrain graphics file in BoA. 2. Select sheet 716, icon 6, and copy. 3. Open Photoshop and select "new from clipboard". 4. Flip image horizontally. 5. Save. The default format is .psd. What would be better? 6. Open saved image with Graphic Adjuster. See pixels.
  21. Thanks. Here's another one: How do I edit a graphic without getting a bunch of white noise in the background? I'm using Adobe Photoshop, because that's what I have. If there's something else that's better (and free) for a Mac, I'll get it.
  22. This is probably a dumb question, but is there an easy way to rotate a terrain 90 degrees with the editor or scripting, or do I have to actually alter the graphic?
  23. If your imagination is spurred now, just wait until you get Blades of Avernum.
  24. Celtic Minstrel, is there a more recent version of MM than the one you submitted to Tridash? Sorry, I couldn't find a version number, but the one I have seems to be broken.
