  1. If you don't mind editing, you could download Pyro's trainer and use the item duplicator to get more Living Tools.
  2. Depending on exactly how high your intelligence it, Warriors will have more essence than Guardians by level 25-30 thanks to their higher multiplier. Other than that, they're identical.
  3. These are my stats after the demo area. I have a level 20 Plated Artila whose resistance to magic damage made it possible to beat the Presence Mind. The acid damage is huge this early in the game, though it did rob some much-needed exp. from my character. I hope to hang on to it for a long time to make myself feel like it was a worthwhile loss. I'm getting +1 INT from the Student's Belt. My stats.
  4. The Stunning Blade, huh? I've normally overlooked it in Shocktrooper runs in favor of weapons with higher base damage. I didn't realize the stunning effect was quite so powerful. Thanks.
  5. I think that one of the classes that got the short end of the stick in G5 is the Warrior/Guardian. Warriors will invariably be superior by mid-game, so that's what I'll go with. I want to try to work a viable squadron build that focuses on Magic Shaping and melee skills. The difficulty will be set at Torment. At first, I will lean slightly towards the rebels, joining up with the Trakovites as soon ASAP to get access to much-needed healing and blessing spells. Then I'll switch to Astoria before going pro-Shaper and joining Alwan once and for all. I want to hold off on Fire Shaping until then so that I don't have to spend any skill points to get a Drayk. I will start by investing heavily in mechanics so that I can steal the Shaper Robe from Rawal's bedroom before fighting the presence. This will allow me to make a Plated Artila to ramp up my damage output early. With the Int boosts from the turning in Mehkan and the Student's Belt, I'll have just enough essence for this as a level 12 Warrior. The Thirsting Gloves and Thorny Chitin will be my best friends. After getting some Mental Magic, Blessing Magic, and Vlish from Haria-Kel I'll attempt (and quite possibly fail) to infiltrate the Repository and recover the Frozen Blade. If it works, the mid-game hump will be a lot easier to get over. If not, well, I'll have to make due with an enchanted Steel Broadsword for most of the fens. I'll deliberately lay off Dex and QA so that my Warrior will attack last and soak up more hits. The lack of powerful Dazing effects will hurt early on, and low Blessing Magic may be too painful to wait on Haria-Kel. Any thoughts on how to make this less torturous?
  6. The statement, I believe, is that a single misstep can devastate the area. Specifically, the extremely fast-growing plants around Medab will eventually leech most of the nutrients from the soil. However, it's entirely reasonable to expect that most of the life in the Drypeak Mountains was shaped simply to require different, fewer, and/or less nutrients than their naturally-occurring counterparts. On the topic of the thread, I've always seen the Shapers as the tragic heroes. After the survivors of the Sucia tribal wars saw the horror of random mutations, they resolved to never allow such monstrosities to be recreated. Unwittingly, they created intelligent creatures that posed just as much of a threat, eventually toppling the peaceful, prosperous society the Shapers had erected.
  7. Drayks, hands down. They really form the cornerstone of the entire storyline, and are always interestingly dynamic in their pursuit of self-interest. No drayks -> no Eass -> no Ghaldring -> no rebellion -> no prolonged war -> no plot after G2.
  8. Then you would be simultaneously filled with five different genomes and die. >.> A Geneforge similar to that in G1 but with even more "perfect" DNA would be interesting, though.
  9. The explanation of how modification works given in G4 is that it replaces your genetic code with that of another being. It doesn't necessarily require that that genome be superior. The first Geneforge was extremely difficult to build because it contained the DNA of a "perfect" shaper - a shaper with very high stats in every area. The G2 and G3 Geneforges were designed for Drakons, and I assume the Drakon genome has a different diploid number than humans. The G4 Geneforge contains the genes that allow for the manipulation of essence. The G5 Geneforge contains genes that are closer to normal than you currently are. Thus, it has the effect of restoring you even if that was not the explicit intent.
  10. You'll find the Frozen Blade in a chest in the center of the map. That's pretty sweet for the early game, especially if you're playing a melee-capable character. I should try a playthrough like that with a Shocktrooper so that I can ditch a couple early creations and snag more exp.
  11. I've gone with ROT-hie-zun, and express the "d" by rolling the "t" slightly. It makes it sound eerily Germanic. rot-GROTH ELL-rah (roll the "ll") SHAY-luh AHLL-wahn
  12. rofl I've always thought of Thahd as blunt because they don't have the mental capacity to remember to draw out pronunciation. I've always figured "geen" in geneforge since the main idea is that it forges your genes. I think we need someone fluent in German for rotdhizon. lol
  13. Guardians have base essence 40 and essence multiplier 6/8. Warriors have base essence 10 and multiplier 7/8. Given 10 Int, the Warrior will overtake the Guardian at level 23, a little later with less Int. Other than that, no. My favorite has always been the Shaper, but G5 has converted me to the Shocktrooper.
  14. I've never had any success with Clawbugs until G5. Up until then, Rotgroths were pretty much the only worthwhile battle creations thanks to acid and double attacks. The other battle creations hit for below-average damage against most enemies in G1-G4, especially when you could be using a hardier Drayk, a superpowered Wingbolt, or a swarm of Vlish with auxiliary effects. Rotdhizons are my favorite G5 creation, though. I saved up cash and had two by the time I hit Perikalia.
  15. You could try modifying the specs on early-game equipment like gloves, tunics, and capes. I'm no scripting expert, but I did that in G4, and I'd imagine you can do it in G5.
  16. Decrease the brightness on your monitor and increase the contrast. It won't make the font bigger, but it should make it clearer and less of a headache.
  17. If it says something to the effect of "the lock is too complicated to be picked" then you need a special key which you can find somewhere else. If it says "you need x living tools to open the lock" then you need to either raise your mech or get more living tools.
  18. Someone posted this in another thread. Check to make sure those two settings aren't both on. That completely got rid of lagginess at the cost of minor reduction in graphics quality. EDIT: setting both of these to On really degraded the graphics and made the text look all washed out.
  19. Just now happened to me as well. It was solved by reloading and approaching the door from the west instead of the south.
  20. It's the west exit from the Ilya West Road - the edge of the map that the Serviles and enemies run out of when you get into that general area.
  21. I started playing Geneforge because Fire Emblem games weren't coming out fast enough. Niche? Yeah. And I've come to expect people to have a love-hate relationship with the genre. What I don't expect is a contributing editor of a major review website to worry so much about mechanics in what he must know is a highly specialized gaming style.
  22. Quote: Here's the background story: A sect of shapers (Neo-barzaites) decides that since the cat is out of the bag and canisters are widely awailable, there's no longer any reason to try to suppress the self-shaping of shapers. So they sneak to the island and secretly prepare to make one last Geneforge - the best and strongest of all that can finally give shapers the raw power to defeat all rebels. As they make final adjustments a newly appointed Shaper/lifecrafter on his way to continent gets caught in a storm and crashes into the shores of Sucia island. He starts to explore the island in hope of finding a new boat to take him home. He finds out that many factions have found out about the Neo-barzaite scheme and send attack forces to take the island. Little does he know that events on Sucia island shall change the world once more as it becomes scenery of the last chapter of the great war as all the factions send forces to capture/complete/destroy the last Geneforge. As the shaper/lifecrafter joins in the conflict he has to journey through the familiar landscape. Finally he shall reach the Geneforge and has to decide, what happens to it. The final victory belongs to whomever controls the Geneforge (the genuine shaper made Geneforge, not some drakon hackjob). I second the motion. It doesn't necessarily require a rebel defeat in Western Terrestria, since there's no evidence that the rebels control or even monitor Sucia. I'm just not sure which G5 ending(s) could allow for this to be plausible.
  23. Unless you subscribe to the most radical applications of non-cognitivism, in which case you hold that the claim that the bell has been wrung has not factual significance and, by extension, can never be factually proven. Thus, I contend that the bell was never wrung. By so altering the perceived past, I have effectively undone the purported action of ringing the bell. I win?
  24. Usually when people say "should" they're factoring in how many points you should have invested in a certain skill. For instance, essence increases with both level and (more importantly) intelligence. If you haven't been pumping intelligence, your essence will be low. Also, different classes get different multipliers for how much essence they receive. All of that data can be found here: http://www.ironycentral.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=117305#Post117305
  25. Ah, that makes sense, now. And now I can actually crunch some numbers when I want to decide which stats to pump. Thanks.
