  1. But why would the zero charges stay in your inventory and not disappear, either when picked up or when used the first time?

I wonder, would it show up in the items script if it was intentionally placed? Or has Jeff ever commented on its existence?

  2. There are numerous reports of slow-downs with the first three games on newer PCs. Jeff hasn't been able to determine a specific cause, though. I believe that running the game in a 32-bit compatibility mode (or whatever it's called) can help a bit.

  3. I think you'd also have a hard time convincing the government that those majors would be worth the money. Yes, STEM degrees are important and will help develop the nation and all that jazz. No one is arguing against that point. We have to keep in mind, though, that those aren't the only important things.

I've grown used to recognizing custom titles. I've used that method for a long time, which means at first I mistakenly believed all Cartographer accounts belonged to the same person ("Silveriiburache" tongue )

This. Nikki has a custom title, making him easier to identify. I, on the other hand, have refrained from ever changing my PDN because I'm not exactly recognizable.

Anyway, back on topic, I'm a Geneforge fan through-and-through. I never got into the A1-3 style, and I didn't really try 4-6. I figured I would when A:EftP came out, but I didn't get around to it. Avadon was good, but I still like the setting and mythology of the Geneforge saga the best.
  5. Now everyone, hold on just a minute. The US has a huge number of college/graduate students, and the cost to the colleges and universities is pretty large. It would take quite a bit of money from the federal government even to eliminate tuition just at public institutions. Money on the order of magnitude of a few whole percentage points of the military budget!*

That said, the Constitution does place the onus of educating the public on the states, not the central government. From this standpoint, I understand why Ron Paul would eliminate the US DoE. I understand it, but I don't like it. Education is important, and if it requires a Constitutional Amendment to justify federal assistance, then I'm all for the 28th Amendment.

*(I have no math to back that up)

  6. ES - I won't be paying nearly that much. Like my edit says, I get a lot of aid. The most reasonable college I'm looking at is about 11,000 a year, total fees less aid.

  7. I'm sure that Radar saw those coming and fled the building. A lot of those are just so forced that they're not funny. I'll admit that there are a few classic chem puns that I still enjoy, and clever, incidental puns are great, but taken too far, and it's just butchering the poor periodic table.

  8. The 63,000 was total cost, including estimated books and travel expenses. It's a bit ridiculous, and I'm comparing it to liberal arts colleges with total costs over 50,000.

University of Maryland, College Park, is my areas preferred state school. The in-state tuition is around 10,000, with the same for room and board. It's still a heck of a lot cheaper than private schools.

EDIT: I should mention, though, that need-based aid has really taken off in private education. Many top tier schools, and even a lot of mid-range ones, are offering full coverage of "demonstrated financial need." Of course, the magic formula for calculating that figure is rather elusive and excellent at under-estimating things for the middle class.

  9. I'm in a similar situation right now: crunching numbers to figure out where I can go. The University of Chicago has a total annual cost of nearly $63,000, so I get to send in a financial aid appeal to try to get some more out of them.

  10. I walk nearly a mile to and from school each day. A few years ago, I walked twice that just to avoid riding the bus. With an iPod and no company, I have no issue walking a mile for something. Two and you're pushing it, just because I don't feel like walking back. Anything more than that, and you had better have a really good reason for bringing me.

Then again, my parents are great about giving me rides when I need to be somewhere, and many of my friends can drive me if I'm doing something social.

  11. 1. If you look through the item scripts, there should be a line of code in the definition of each stackable item that isn't present on other items. Copying this code should make other items stackable. I don't have the scripts on this computer, or I would look them up for you. Naturally, back up all scripts before you alter them.

I believe 2-4 are all coded into the engine and cannot be changed.

Amongst other things, Macbook Pros after mid 2011 can only run 10.7+ Also, since I've had my hard drive replaced, I no longer have access to the Apple Hardware Test. The laptops no longer come with any external boot ware, it's all kept on a hidden partition. When they reformat or replace a drive, the do an abridged install, omitting the AHWT from the recovery drive. And only the Airs can use the internet HWT, leaving me in a peck of trouble.

  13. I really don't mind most of the new features in Lion. I don't use launchpad at all; Quicksilver is far superior. I use mission control as spaces with a new look. What I don't like, though, are the new restrictions and limits that Apple is putting on. Making the ~/library hidden by default? And rumor is that Apple will make it nearly impossible to use anything but the App Store to install software with 10.8. Sometimes I wish I could install 10.6 on this machine.

A: No, they were ported by skilled third-party developers in close consultation with us. My increasingly old brain doesn't have the space to learn to develop for any new platforms. It doesn't even have space to hold everything I need to know now. The number of things I need to do for my job that I need to relearn from scratch every time I do them is already really high.

FYI, that statement was written concerning the new Android and Linux ports, not iPad or Windows ports, which continue to be done by Spiderweb.

As for the Mac version coming first, followed by the iPad, Jeff has explained that before. He can only write one version at a time, being a single person. He prefers working on Mac, and that's what he's always done first, so he sticks with it. It is then easier to port from Mac to iOS than it is to Windows, so he gets that one done first. He doesn't delay and do a simultaneous release because, well, he has to make a living. He wants his new games out as soon as they're ready.
  15. I am of the impression that such saves are standard on mobile devices. Most apps go dormant when you exit them, unless you actively quit them. For some reason, it appears that Avadon does this semi-save periodically rather than while quitting. It could be that the save takes longer so they do it at intervals.
