  1. The drakons are simply the latest generation of Shaping tyrants, which was what the rebellion was trying to escape from. The main difference is that the drakons have no rules besides "I can tear you limb from limb, therefore you are my slave", whereas the Shapers had an effective, if imperfect, law code.

I uphold tradition because there is nothing better to uphold. Of course, a little reformation in the system wouldn't hurt.

It was just a thought. And it is still quite possible. No offense, Servile.

Speaking of which, as a Shaper I am the superior race... just kidding, I'm a (semi-)Trakovite at heart.
  3. That's good to know about A5. Even though it's not terribly realistic, it's nice to be able to pick up twenty-five iron bars in a dungeon and not worry about running home right away.

I guess my slith tank will have to carry most everything, since none of the others will ever have many points in strength. Still, encumbrance is nasty for characters that have to use several AP just to get withing striking distance of the enemy.

I had considered the tactic of picking stuff up only after clearing the area, but in many areas that's just not practical.

  4. Forgive me if this has already been discussed, but is it a good idea to designate a party member as a packhorse, spending all their skill points on strength and such? Or the reduced fighting efficiency of your party a bit much relative to the amount of XP you are getting?

I haven't done much in the Avernum games, but I always wondered who to give the heavy stuff to.

Added: This is essentially the "Deadweight Shaper" idea from the Geneforge series. I didn't use it much in those games, but I thought it might be nice in a party.

  5. My new G4 character will try a lethal combo of loyalism (result: better training) and canister obsession. To avoid a bad ending, he will also be a Trakovite. Power-gaming, much?

  6. In real life, that would be called radiation.

Yes, the core difference between the Shapers and the drakons (or Sucia Island researchers) is that the mainstream Shapers used a trial and error system based on tradition, and the drakons/other Shapers studied the genetic code itself and then modified it. The latter, of course, is a main goal of modern genetic research.

  7. After you kill the gazer jailer of Agatha and co., you will find rooms with a rothghroth canister and battle roar canister. And (I think) some more rogues. If you want to ever cast battle roar, use that canister because it's the only spell you can't get from a trainer.

  8. I am obsessed with drayks. Eyebeasts are fun too :p

With that in mind, it's odd that I'm such a loyalist. I think my eccentric views on such things would get me exiled by the Council if I were a shaper. So I would most likely turn out like Khyryk, which would be pretty cool. wink

  9. I think it's interesting how the Shapers seem to have almost Trakovite ideas about having too much power. Whenever a group of researchers (Sucia Island group, Gull Island shapers, etc) have too many discoveries, like about Shaping each other or the Geneforge, they do everything possible to destroy that knowledge. This is why the drakons know all this stuff about cells and DNA, and most Shapers don't.

So why can't the Shapers and Trakovites get along? Both seem to have similar ideals to some extent. But I guess the only Geneforge character who agrees with me there is Khyryk.

But this would also block your way which could cause problems of not being able to get somewhere you need to get to.
They did specify "breakable" trees. So you could just burn them up or hack them down when they had served your purpose.
  11. G1 is great because there's nothing bad about canister mania. So yeah, my current characters are canister FIENDS (G1 and G4) even though I generally play totally loyalist, and only take drayk canisters.
