  1. As has been said in other forums, A4 kinda stinks, so some folks would argue that you should skip to A5. I myself might argue that it's good for one playthrough (I think it's the single funniest game Spiderweb ever made.)

Can you tell I'm not fond of Stephen King? Then again, considering how well his books sell, perhaps I should give him a sixth chance. Also, it's highly probable someone on these boards will come to his defense and give an argument as to just what I'm missing that makes him great.

Thank you, Spiderweb Software Forums. <3 Well, Slithzerakai, actually, but close enough.
  5. It's a LOT more useful in the early Avernums, though, and to a lesser degree in G1. In Avernum 3 a martial artist--I think his name was Zhang--could hit me three times in a single turn. I didn't even bother going into combat mode--even though he'd reduced me to 0 HP on his second flurry, I "lucked out" and avoided death on every subsequent hit until I killed him. Broken, I know--which might be why in later games it does so much less.
  6. Incidentally, I vaguely recall a version of the original Avernum that ran on Linux--not with Wine, mind you, but as an actual Linux program. Are there any plans to do something similar with later games?
  7. Was Exile more open than Avernum? Looking at a list of some of the things you could do in-game, I saw some stuff that didn't look like it was kept for the remake (for instance, "wreak a horrid revenge on the surface world.")
  8. Come to think of it, didn't Aniruddha (hope I spelled that right) make a mod for this very purpose a while back? At least, he claimed to--I never actually saw him link to it.
  9. The Servile is generally considered the best, though some favor the Infiltrator. (I've seen calculations that if you want to use both magic and weapons, you're better off with the Servile.) The Shaper is quite fun to some people, but I've always been intimidated by having to manage the leveling and development of all my little creations. The Shock Trooper isn't worth bothering with (though it gets better in G5.) The Warrior is generally considered the weakest class, but I've found that it's rather satisfying to destroy your foes with a steel blade rather than an army of monstrosities or a rain of fire.
  10. Hogfather has been an interesting subject for me since shortly after meeting a fellow named Eugene, who insisted on being addressed as Susan. Sneaking a peek at the back cover of the book he was carrying, I noticed a line about "Death's no-nonsense daughter Susan" and suddenlyly understood. (Mind you, I still find it a little weird that every time he ordered a smoothie at a certain famous chain he asked for a "Femme Boost" in it . . .)

That last line saved your reputation as an amateur literary critic, at least in my mind.

Wait, what? This is all wrong. Parry and Riposte are both 3% per point for melee, and Parry is also 2% per point for missiles and single-target spells. The cap is 50% in all cases, although it's very unlikely that you'll actually be able to hit the cap for anything except Parry and melee attacks. Hmm . . . Where did I get this from, anyways? It was written in the style typically used by topics Strategy Central links to, but I'm not sure it was actually linked to from there.
  13. You might as well play them in order, skipping A4 if you so desire. (While I didn't much like A3, everyone else seems to.)

Bella is so whiny and self-centered it's inconceivable she would choose to move to Forks in the first place. She made her dad come visit her; why would she suddenly to something nice for him now? Then she meets Edward and becomes Edward-centered. Seriously, the amount of adjectives spent on describing Edward's physical appearance is absolutely ridiculous. Dikiyoba gave up reading after Chapter 3, in which Edward saves Bella from being hit by a van. Then an ambulance comes to pick Bella and Edward up (but mostly for Bella) and people skip class to see whether she's okay. The kid who was driving the van apparently crawled to the hospital, because the book doesn't really concern itself with him until he shows up covered in blood to aplogize to Bella. Since when does being a complete and utter piece of crap disqualify something from being a classic? As evidence I present Les Miserables, The Scarlet Letter, almost anything by Shakespeare, The Count of Monte Cristo, almost anything by Jack London, almost any famous dystopia novel, arguably The Red Badge of Courage (though its realism has been deservedly praised) . . . The list is pretty much endless. Each entry I've listed qualifies as a piece of crap in a different way, ranging from jaw-dropping nihilism, to characters as symbols rather than people, to straight-up cheese and hackwork. Each also has become a classic for another reason, sometimes even a related reason. I myself would put Twilight as closest in nature to Romeo and Juliet--annoying people do stupid things out of love, but their language is flowery enough to make most of us not want to strangle them. P.S. By the way, if you get past chapter 3, you'll find that Bella is anything but self-centered. As another character remarks in the third book, she was born in the wrong millennium--she would have been perfect as a martyr being fed to the lions. This is almost as irritating as the character type you describe--I only got through book 1 because I'd just attempted to read Rebecca and Bella came off comparatively well compared to the heroine of that work.
  17. I think the charms are in the item list that was compiled a while back.
  18. Come to think of it, if beta testing has begun already, the plot must be pretty well nailed down. It'll be interesting to see what Jeff actually creates--quite possibly, something we're not expecting at all. (I could never have come up with the plotline of A2 on my own.)
  19. Just received a stern lecture from the smartest girl in my school after she saw me reading a book in the Twilight series. Apparently she didn't think it was intellectual enough for the likes of me. Aside from hating being classified as somehow "above" the people around me, I began to wonder more and more about why it is that Twilight doesn't qualify as a classic--every argument I can think of would also disqualify Romeo and Juliet, The Scarlet Letter, or The Lord of the Rings. Also, found an online comic, www.misfile.com. I've been waiting for a chance to plug it--it's not exactly the most tasteless thing I've ever read, but it's hands-down the most hilarious.
  20. New plot idea that occurred to me: remember that giant in A5 who had plans to "rise" and turned out to be hiding giant children in a back room? For the past five games, the playable species have been forcing monsters into submission and slaughtering those who rebel. Now they unite to rise up against their oppressors, aided by the lower-class humans who've grown sick of the tyranny of Dorikas, and . . . Oh dear, I've gone Averforge again, haven't I? P.S. Then again, something of this order, with less of an obvious Geneforge parallel, might actually be Jeff's best option. Since he wants to have 4-6 be the "Darkside Loyalist Trilogy," perhaps he could set up an Enemy Mine situation, with our heroes as members of the anti-Dorikas rebellion and monsters allied temporarily with said rebellion. Dorikas certainly seems the type to embark on widespread extermination of giants and the like.
  21. Played Nethergate, and got accustomed to that system where the things you can ask about light up blue. Tried to play Exile, and found out that you're supposed to figure out for yourself what can and can't be asked about. Certain individuals on these boards have posted that those who get irritated at having to manually enter every noun in a scrap of dialogue to continue the conversation are simply "stupid," but certain others seem to have the same difficulties as I do. My question is, given that people have been making all sorts of editors and cheats (for Jeff's later games, at any rate), did anyone ever make a mod or something of that nature to make it apparent what words can be asked of what NPCs?
  22. Apparently, a lot of people invest virtually nothing and just hang on to items that boost shaping skills when equipped. After all, shaping skill is only required to make the creation, not to keep it around once made.
  23. I believe it says when you meet Solberg in A5 that he's become part-undead. Anyone want to find the quote?
