  1. Does anyone know whether Jeff has completely given up on his Bottom Feeder blog? I've really appreciated the insights he's posted there in the past. His point of view is not one that you commonly see.
  2. That's more or less what I figured. It's just a bit disappointing, as I like to keep large numbers of archived saves with rather verbose and descriptive names so that I can go back later to try things differently. The current system just makes that impractical.
  3. I dislike the way saved games have been handled on recent Spiderweb games, namely, a short list of saved game slots. I vastly prefer the older way (at least on Windows--I don't have any experience with the Mac versions) where I can save as many games as I want wherever I want, with whatever name I want. Does anyone know if there's some technical reason Jeff would do it the current way? Is this a Mac thing that has just migrated over to the Windows side? It actually feels very console-ish to me. Does anyone think there's any chance Jeff would listen to reason (I know I'm right! I just know it!) and have a standard Windows save dialog?
  4. Well, arrow keys only go in four directions, rather than all eight, so that is suboptimal; and I prefer to use the keyboard as much as possible, especially since I only have a mousepad on my laptop. I can make do, and have been doing so. I just find it irritating, and wish there were some way to fix it. Thank you for your advice, but it doesn't really help.
  5. I have a Dell XPS laptop which has no dedicated numberpad. Instead, it has a mode where you can use the keys: 789 UIO JKL as the numpad. However, when I do this for character movement, it also registers as the numbers themselves. This is a problem because as you're wondering around, occasionally messages pop up about something the characters notice, etc. Unfortunately, you can press 1 to close these windows, and if I happen to be moving south (1 on the numpad), it closes the window. What's particularly odd is that I can't use the numbers themselves (1 through 9 across the top of the keyboard) as movement keys (not that I would want to), so it's not like the computer can't tell the difference between a regular 1 and a numpad 1. Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? I'm tired of having to reload games to read a message that gets closed immediately. Thanks.
  6. I notice that the second Avernum 5 screenshot has boats, which I am glad to see return. However, I'm curious as to how they will work. The message window at the bottom has the standard Avernum "You wait" message, so overall the movement seems to be Avernum standard (i.e., you can use the keyboard). However, it also says "You carefully get into the boat. (To row to a different space, click on it. To get off the boat, row next to land and click on the boat.)" Does this mean that the boat movement is Geneforge-ish (i.e., you have to use the mouse)? That was always one of my least-favorite Geneforge innovations.
  7. Oh, and although I don't know how typical this behavior is, when my monitor is in 800x600 mode, it doesn't distort things; rather, it has two black bars on the left and right of the screen to have a standard 4:3 ratio.
  8. But I actually prefer it at 800x600! If I want it to stay at 1280x800, I can just tell it not to switch. As it is, both options (switch or don't switch) are the same. Well, I can just do it manually.
  9. For some reason, the new Nethergate refuses to change the screen resolution on my laptop. Avernums 1-4 all do it properly. I can change manually to 800x600 before I start playing, but it's kind of annoying to have to do that. Whether I have it preset to change resolutions, or have it ask on startup, it always just centers the game in my standard resolution (1280x800). Any suggestions? It's a Dell XPS M1210 laptop running Windows XP Professional Version 2002 with Service Pack 2.
