a lot of the ideas in this thread couldn't really be put into an rpg setting, especially with the engines jeff's been using. i'm sure he could add in specialized shields and armor, though
-
well, yeah, metal being heavier and more expensive was another reason. and i actually was talking about the wooden shield with a metal frame, i just forgot to mention that part of it for some reason.
-
just to beat the topic to death a bit more: the reason why most shields were made mostly out of wood was because things get stuck in wood a lot more easily than metal. that definitely makes it harder to fight against multiple enemies, but easier to fight one. if you're fighting against somebody with a halberd and it gets stuck in your shield, you pretty much just disarmed that person.

wait...you're complaining that the hardest difficulty level in the game is hard? just add extra resistances and you'll get where you want to be after awhile. it's not like, for example, 135% fire resistance will really give you 135% resistance to fire.
-
yeah, e2 had ambidextrous.
-
for some reason, i like the whole, "you can't cast quickfire because you're not as good in magic as vahnatai are" idea. i guess phoenix eggs could make a return as regular (but rare) items, though.

Avernum 3: A job board quest
Sss-Chah replied to Abhishek's topic in Avernum Trilogy (2000-2002 original versions)
if that's not the answer to your question, then what are you asking? -

in other words, hit g every couple of steps.

jeff'll probably remake the whole series with a newer engine, which probably also means better graphics.
-
really? i can't even get avernums 1-3 to install on vista.

Maximum Reputation on Avernum 1
Sss-Chah replied to jimbob's topic in Avernum Trilogy (2000-2002 original versions)
i remember telling one of the scimitar members about the exit. i'm not sure if this raises reputation or not for that quest, though. -
i don't think a second expedition would be a very wise choice. i mean, if they had accomplished anything really significant, you would've heard something about them and avernum probably wouldn't become a penal colony. they could maybe discover the exit to the surface, but even that's kind of iffy. maybe the first expedition could enter through the exit rather than teleport. that would answer the question of how they got there in the first place and why the exit is guarded when your avernum 1 party tries to get through it.

unless the cloud of blades or stinking cloud (or am i thinking of nethack?) spells make a come back, none of the area spells damage allies. there really isn't any downside to area spells, other than using up more mp than the non-area spells, but most of the time they're stronger so it still makes sense anyway.

well, since dual-wielding's making a comeback, pole weapons will seem even more underpowered.

i've always thought that an avernum: origins would be nice. and i'm sure he meant that it wasn't anything that happened in exile that didn't happen in avernum, but he just said exile because it was released long before avernum.\ edit: fixed a grammar error that i just found.

Avernum Resources
Sss-Chah replied to tyrtix's topic in Avernum Trilogy (2000-2002 original versions)
then again, you can always have something seemingly random and just explain it as vahnatai in origin -
maybe. i just don't remember ever doing that.

What Should I Play?
Sss-Chah replied to Devour's topic in Avernum Trilogy (2000-2002 original versions)
i miss the freedom of doing whatever you want after the game ends from the first couple games. -
i'm too lazy to read this entire thread right now, but you probably don't actually need to be able to dispel barriers in order to beat the game. i still have yet to play it, but jeff usually doesn't require that stuff in his games. it tends to help, but that's pretty much it.
-
his question: why would i do that? my answer: because there's plenty of time to beat the game way before the tower disaster anyway. you might as well get all the loot first anyway

I like playing sliths and nephils but would rather look at the human pictures - perhaps silly, but it is nice to have characters that one can identify with better when playing for a long time. Thanks. you're thinking of exile. i remember in the demo for e2 i'd use that chainmail bikini chick picture for a slith and naming her "half-slith". that's about it for me and exile, though.

you can always get it and then leave the keep if you really want it.

Name Cameos in Jeff's Games

according to a lot of people, a good way to not get a really big job is forgetting to untag yourself in embarrassing facebook pictures.
