  1. hmmm...that game looks very familiar. do you play this kid who goes into this temple or something and you fight these wolves and then when you come out, you find your home on fire? i played that game like 10 years ago, so i might be a bit off. i kind of remember something about a spell where you can change monsters into other monsters, too
  2. maybe requiring teachers to go through recertification after a certain number of years, like some other important jobs could help to improve education just a bit? at least, i don't think they already do this.

  4. ^that's exactly what i'm talking about. education reform is needed, but it has to be real reform. just to repeat (or maybe paraphrase, i don't feel like looking back at what i said exactly) my previous statement, you can't replace quality with quantity.

  6. there's plenty of things to do during the summer, including doing nothing.

Expensive is not synonymous with bad when it's also necessary. —Alorael, who is quite sure that some kind of educational overhaul is necessary right now. America isn't really in danger of falling from its throne in science and technology thanks to budgets and brain drain, but American children are certainly receiving no favors from public education when they're competing with the rest of the world (brain drain). like a lot of people said, spending more time in school doesn't really help. that's pretty much substituting quality with quantity. we definitely need education reform, that's true. i don't think anybody can really argue with that, but we need to actually reform it, not just make the day/year longer. 8. yeah, but if i remember correctly, it became an undead fortress sometime between 1 and 2
  9. yet another of obama's plans that are cost inefficient.
  10. i guess this is yet another reason to play avernum 4 before 5. you get used to the 5 skill points per level system and barely even notice it after awhile.
  11. they have websites that automatically backup your hd now. i don't know if i'd like that very much myself, but they do it.
  12. just for my own reference, i was wondering in what year the game takes place? i'm assuming it's sometime around the 880's or 90's. also, the gremlin cave sounds like it'll be an interesting dungeon. i'm looking forward to it.
  13. my new favorite drink is a strawberry banana smoothie with whipped cream on it.
  14. i was expecting this thread to be about something else. i'm disappointed.
  15. i usually use at least one of the two on my first guy in each game
  16. i don't mind the spells in avernum, though i agree that some of the exile ones should come back. like scry and that spell you used to put poison on your weapons (envenom?)
  17. i decided after replaying avernum 4 (yes, not in the original exile trilogy, i know) that i like nephils. they seem to be pretty good with strategy in general. i mean, they had that fortress in one of the first two games (i think 1, maybe?) with that oil trap and they attacked from an open corner of the starting fort in e/a2. then, there were a few parts in a4 where they really showed their strategic minds. there was even this one part where they had a thin bridge guarded by both nephilim and i think submission fungus.
  18. so the answer to my question is yes, awesome. and yeah, the emperor from avernum 1 wasn't in northwest avernum Click to reveal.. even though you had to go there to get to him
  19. there are a few places where vahantai join you in avernum 4, so if you really want a vahnatai in your party, play that game. anyway, am i right in assuming that there's a reason for the famine, or is it just happening? it's probably a spoiler, so that question doesn't have to be answered, but it could be something as simple as the magic that sustains the crops starting to wear off and/or massive drought on the surface.
  20. the empress' father (obviously, the emperor) was killed at the end of the first game. in the second game, the empire attacks avernum, but the vahnatai help avernum because the empire stole some crystal souls. in the third game, one of the vahnatai (rentar) attacks the surface in revenge, but avernum helps fight her off and gets rewarded with some land. in the 4th game (not in the exile series), she attacks avernum for helping the empire.
  21. i believe someone in mertis tells you about that. if i remember correctly, it doesn't say where he is, other than that he's somewhere in the honeycomb, but he's in a pretty obvious place if you know anything about the series
