Avernum series - Avernum 4 plot

Thing about Cure is that it doesn't totally purge poison- poison works in "ranks", and the more you have, the more damage it does. Casting Cure always lowers the ranks you have, so even if you don't get rid of your poison, it doesn't become a lethal dosage automatically.

A4 has a terrible plot, a nice idea for a system that grows stale, unwaveringly unoriginal combat, and a horrible graphics package. Buy BoE. -
CLAWBUGS AS CHITRACHES Death to Vogel Now!

Chitraches look like friggin' clawbugs. And everyone who has played and enjoyed the Exile games had damned well better want to kill Jeff to death for this mistake. >8E

A3 gives nephils all sorts of racial slurs- one of the things I liked about it. It also recognizes sliths- remember the Kriszan Province patrol that basically attacks the party if they have a slith in their midst? -
Bug/oddity (possible spoilers for Spire)

Bargha doesn't go 100% hostile if you kill the Warmaster, but on the other hand, that's probably because there's some vital services there that aren't in Spire, including the pylon. PS- Am I the only one who thought the "war between two cities" thing was FAR too poorly executed? -
I agree with Thuryl- my biggest challenge with wiping out the chitraches was figuring out where the queen actually *was*.
-
...you can complete the game in the dark? In my version, you were stopped 5-6 spaces away from the section's boundary.
-
Right. Demonslayer, for instance.
-
Man. Gazerskin Sandals are the only things that you can put on your feet that prevent your head from getting cleaved off. The last "0" has to be a typo. Otherwise, it's a mistake.

This has got to be an error on Jeff's part. I mean, really.

Anyway, the secret passage begins in Fort Draco. If you don't know where they are, just ask the commander. (I'm not sure if you need to have completed the undead mission first, though.) Or alternatively, visit the mad Hedge Wizard east of Ft. Draco and use the trap door under his house and go east.

I beat the Testing Bones in a better way- I hasted my fighter, had the rest of my party flee and had the bones come to the fighter. Now, the bones lets off its ice spray at the beginning of its turn, so I would just have my hasted fighter get out of Dodge- he'd have so many AP that he could get out of the bones' melee *and* ice spray attack range. The bones never hit me with either attack, but since it "tried" to use the ice attack, it still counted as attacking me. Victory. -

I was saying that it's the Onyx Scepter- an old favorite. And that you have to get to Rentar's first fort.

Is this game nothing but combat?

Wasn't it the Onyx Scepter? Anyway, you need to get to Rentar Ihrno's lair to kill the shades, and that just ain't happening in the demo. Sorry.
-
Kel's wrong. The shade is one of those monsters (like Doricas or Rentar) who literally cannot be killed. You can pound the shade into what SHOULD be well below 0HP, but it will always persist (and regenerate).
-
...you can't kill it in the demo. I mean it- you quite literally can't kill it.
-
...how can you give emergency first aid to a statue?
-
I also think that A4 could use its color shift technology to make some really interesting encounters by using camouflage- that is, monsters who appear randomly and *almost* look like the terrain around them... Until they attack. One example I liked was the stone worms (summoned) on the cave floor that's sort of grey-ish. I barely even saw those things until they were already firing at me.

should i?

...if you liked the demo a LOT and don't mind a significant decrease in gameplay, get it. Remember, folks. JV is the genius of placing registration barriers- he knows when and where to put them, and it's usually the exact point at which gameplay thereafter goes sour. EDIT: Wait, that's not true. The GF games all typically start sucking before you hit their barriers.
