I also run WinXP in VirtualBox, and it works great in that environment. I use it to play the Exile trilogy, BoX, and most of the Avernum and Geneforge series. Too bad Microsoft plans to stop supporting WinXP shortly, if they haven't already; it was one of their better OSes.

 

The fastest OS I've ever used in VirtualBox was Win98. After the initial install, it booted in about 7 seconds flat.

Yeah, setting up the tunables is the hard part. Installing the OS is relatively easy. I've tried installing Win95/98 in both DOSBox and VirtualBox, but could never get the display settings right, nor could I find a good driver.

Thanks, I'll have to remember that next time, though I'm still a near-total newbie at using command lines (and Linux in general, for that matter).

 

However, at the time this happened, it wasn't nearly as bad as you might think, because 1) I was running a fairly new installation of Raspbian on my Raspberry Pi; and 2) experience has taught me not to put any documents on the same disk as the OS, so what little that was worth saving was already on a separate USB drive.

I normally listen to other people's favorite music; for the most part, I have little to no control over what's playing. Which is okay, since I'll listen to a lot of different genres. I can't stand rap, though.

 

Currently, my mp3 player has music by Weird Al Yankovic, the Beatles, the Guckenheimer Sour Kraut Band, and Napoleon XIV.

Tell me about it. I once corrupted the file containing the sudoers list, and had to reinstall because none of the users could use "sudo" anymore.

Having a somewhat similar issue. I want to do a little Raspberry Pi project where I make a little treasure chest case, and have it be an Exile 3 box. Unfortunately, can't get it to open, after unizipping everything, running the exile3 command simply doesn't respond. Running Wheezy Raspbian. Would run wine, but so far as I can tell, it's a no go on the Pi. Are there any known workarounds that might be suitable for this?

Colchis changes earlier than that - between day 1 and 2, although it's probably a glitch (the helpful shade and most of the slimes are absent on day 1).

IIRC, Colchis is destroyed on day 2. You're not expected to go there on day 1.

I've seen tutorials for installing Windows 3.1 and 95 in DOSBox, but I never knew it could be done for Win98/98SE. Cool!

You are still in DOSBOX with Win 95? Awesome! I had read that it could be done, but had not tried it.

I've heard that until the NTFS kernel was developed, Windows at its core was basically a shell over DOS. Therefore, installing an old version of Windows in DOSBox shouldn't be surprising.

I can't even stomach gin, or brandy for that matter. Although, the worst alcohol I've tried is a "beer" called Pabst Blue Ribbon. I've accidentally drank spoiled milk before, and I would rate that experience as more pleasant than that foul substance.

I've had quite a few beers in my day, and I can sympathize. Next time, you may want to try Samuel Adams or Heineken; they're much better than PBR. St. Pauli Girl is good too, and so is (if you can take it, it's relatively strong stuff) Guinness. Also, avoid Schlitz at all costs, it tastes just like the name; the same is true of Mississippi Mud, only more so.

As a Windows user, I don't mind the wait; it just means there will be fewer bugs for the beta testers to find in our version.

If you had to give up one, what would you give up?

Sugar; I don't use it that much anyway. Diabetes runs in my family, so I'll probably have to give it up whether I want to or not.

That depends on what mood I'm in, but I've been known to fancy all of them at various times.

As for having to show ID, I'll never forget the first time I bought beer. The cashier kept rechecking my ID to make sure it wasn't fake; he finally gave up after about 5 minutes, and sold me the beer.

Not really; I was just hibernating.

I didn't go to see any new movies this past year. On a good day, my movie theater experience usually rates less than zero on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best, of course). I still plan on seeing a couple of movies from 2012, though; I'm on the waiting list at my local library for Men in Black 3 (I'm number 72, and they have 12 copies), and I intend to do the same with The Hobbit.

Hey! Family guy is fourth best show on the Television.

If that's among the best that television has to offer, then I'd hate to see the bottom of the barrel. That said, my "idiot box" usually spends a lot of time turned off, so much so that I may as well not own one. For years now, with the exception of Doctor Who, the best thing I've seen on television has been a thick layer of dust.

I got a Doctor Who TARDIS cookie jar. It makes the sound!!

I got a few gift cards. I turned the one from Best Buy into two old Doctor Who stories ("The Ark" and "Castrovalva", on sale for $9.99 each) and a 50-DVD storage tower; there's still some money left on the card.

Re the original topic: I never knew that spiders used any kind of decoy at all, let alone one that was vaguely spider-shaped. That, as was pointed out already, is pretty cool.

 

Re killing spiders: I'm something of an acachnophobe, and have killed a good number of spiders. However, I do realize the role they play in keeping my house insect-free, so I don't go out of my way to hunt them down. As long as I don't see them, I don't mind them so much; though I shudder to think about how many will come out of hiding when the basement gets a good, thorough (and long-overdue) cleaning.

I still bring my copy of BoX out of mothballs every so often. If you write it, I'll give it a whirl, so your effort won't be wasted. Heck, I should probably even play the original; I downloaded it a while back along with several others, but have yet to play it.

I don't know about Win2K, but XP has never caused me trouble either. If I recall correctly, BoE was written in the day of Windows 95/98.

You're close; BoE was written for Win3.1/95.

 

I've run CBoE in Wine with no CPU churning, just a 30-second lag after each click.

One point about leadership: IIRC, you only need 12 points total for the whole game. You only need to get maybe 1-3 more levels on your own; the rest can come from trainers/canisters, and from item bonuses.
