I know BOA and BOE are different games and I was saying that no idea if BOA works and BOE works cause its been upgraded. All Avernums should work and of course all Avadons and Avernum remakes work, Exiles won't and Geneforges vary (5 works and others might have more or less problems). Blades of Avernum no idea (since BoE is opensource nowadays it could work). Testing is easy, just download demos and try to install and start game.

price depends how old computer is in question, pure dos/windows 3.x comps can cost couple hundred bucks, if windows 9x/ME/XP is able to run old games like Exile then prices are low.

its possible to get dos 6.x to run on hyper-v (if has windows 10 which includes hyper-v) too (and maybe older dos too) otherwise vmware player is best option. buying old computer would mean that needs to get old keyboard and mouse too and monitor which has vga-port and old computers can cost alot.

yes its a bug and no it won't get fixed, if you want to clear it then best way is to load older save (if has 1) and get quest and then clear castle and replay from that point onwards as did on other save.

if you play 1st 2 Avernums then you'll need to make alot notes to remember who gave what quest and where. Avernum 5 is 1 long tube while A6 is more open although movement is somewhat restricted early.
