Duh - I forgot about the cheats.

Oops.
I seem to have gone the wrong way and ended up in the Skree caves. The barriers are still up in the Fort Emerald and the gate seems to have closed behind me.
Is there any way out I am missing?

In point of fact I was running Mac v. 1.0.3 when I got stuck.
