  1. Hmm, well I got my computer about 5 years ago, but I have incrementally replaced the motherboard, the RAM, the video card (twice), the cpu, and even the PSU. The original 200GB hard drive is still in it, but I also purchased a 350gb external HD to supplement my storage. Incrementally improving the components seems like a better option than buying a whole new rig in one go. Its easier on the wallet, and everything doesn't go obsolete in one big hit.
  2. I was hoping a teeny bit that Jeff would do something out of the blue and give us all a sci fi epic instead of another fantasy setting. I'm sure it'll be great, but I was a much bigger fan of Geneforge than of the Avernum series. I hope one of the classes has a similar playstyle to Shaper.
  3. "My brother told me he could teach me how to Create Rotghroth. I asked him if he would teach me, and he said no. How do I change this?" I read this as you saying your brother could teach you how to make Rots but he wouldn't. The bastard.
  4. A variable without a name would be a literal wouldn't it? The variable 'a' can store a varying number of values, but the number 10 can only ever be the number 10.
  5. Actually a quick question, do you get more experience on torment? Are these level estimates based on what you can get regardless of the difficulty?
  6. I used dominate a little bit and I was dissappointed to discover that when a charmed target was killed by the enemy, which is possible during a big swarm, you don't get any experience for it. Or at least it seemed that way, I'm not sure if I was too high a level for the mob. Whats the deal here in G5?
  7. Wait, seriously, thats it? Does G5 expect canister abuse in the same way as G1? This sounds like a serious way to gimp a loyalist no-canister Shaper character.
  8. What if you plan on playing no canisters? Can you still get Betas quick enough for them to be useful? Which branch of shaping should you be investing in if you're playing no canister?
  9. The one AP left thing I think mostly benefitted melee characters. It was one of the bigger reasons why I didn't go with battle creations or a guardian in the earlier geneforges. Though actually, the thing the biggest change I liked the most from Geneforge 4 was how encumberance was only based on items you had equipped, not items in your backpack. It was a right pain leaving loot stashes on each island in random barrels because I couldn't carry all the items, and I didn't necessarily want to vendor them.
  10. Anyone experimented with Mac emulation on Windows?
  11. Well, what sort of character did you make? How did you distribute your skills? It is actually recommended to put quite a few points into leadership and mechanics early on as you will get several levels worth more experience from the first areas. All the classes play out a bit differently, and some classes are a bit squishier than others. I've been playing through GF4 again with a Pro-Rebel Servile, and the beginning has been pretty straight forward. He was quite capable of taking on Burke's Drayk solo. When I was running a life crafter though, I resorted to unstable thahds to take it out for me. For tougher encounters I actually recommend using the items you've found. They don't take all your AP to use. So you can effectively attack 3 times in a single round if you use ice crystals, more if you've hasted yourself. If you don't have many buffs available yet, you should have collected a few things like speed or blessing pods that can buff your character for tough encounters. As for having to keep up with NPCs moving around... well, for the most part it won't be an issue. There are a few sequences where you'll have to march in time with the NPCs, like the caravan, but they are not that common.

  13. Configuring for LAN play isn't really any simpler than over the internet. Codewise the work would be identical, its still TCP/IP. Things I would like to see: 1. More variants of a given creation. Instead of just one variant of the base , why not have two or three? It can work easily in terms of plot, since the Shapers are always tweaking their creations. 2. Combat shaping. I still think it would be great if you could shape temporary unstable creations in mid battle, like hostile shapers do.
  14. If lifecrafters typically had extra mutant appendages that would make them fairly easy to spot. Well, not that the radiation glow and the loyal Drakon pets walking either side didn't make it fairly obvious.
  15. I disagree with that. I mean, maybe at the start of the game but by the end of it you're summoning Gazers and Drakons which is the sort of thing only the strong and experienced shapers can do.
  16. Actually, the sort of temporary creatures I would have liked to have seen would have been ones that faded quickly like charged creations, but instead of being stronger were just a fair bit cheaper. So you'd have a couple of permament creations with you maybe, and you'd have enough essense to do in battle summoning of creations and have it viable. A lot of the encounters with shapers seem to do that sort of thing, and it would seem relatively easy to balance on top of being useful. Some rounds it feels like there was not much else for my lifecrafter to do but throw a firebolt at the enemy.
  17. Heh, you can write just about anything in C/C++. Its more of an issue of what code has been done and what would have to be added/changed to make it work, and really that will just depend on the way it has all been implemented currently. It could be a simple matter of adding a new string value to each of the creatures, or it could mean ad hoc code describing each new creature in full.
  18. Why democrat and shaper? Well, the Rebels have their whole doomsday thing going on, and are quite often a bit mad due to the use of canisters. Really, I don't think being Democrat means 'Get rid of the Republicans, even if it involves DESTROYING THE WORLD WITH MASSIVE BIO WEAPONS.'
  19. I was so sad to lose Greenfang by being pro shaper
  20. You can accidently misclick the enemy and instead click the space next to them- automatically spending all your points to walk right next to that rothgoth! Eep.
  21. I've found in Geneforge 3 that sometimes if I'm outside of combat and try to heal while poisoned, the heal gets interrupted by the damage from the poison (or acid). I've also had it a few times that I've attempted to cast some spell, but combat starts in mid animation so the spell doesn't take affect but I lost the energy required to cast. If its not either of those, I'm really not sure.
  22. I'm trying to be pro-shaper, i thought Canisters were bad if you were? I was avoiding having them for that reason. I used one for healing, and that was it. Its a matter of points. I just don't have enough to go around- invest in creations huh? with what? I don't have the energy to make more than say, one, and it would likely be quite a weakling. Especially considering how loathe I am being to use any of them canisters. If theres more quests to improve my stats which don't rely on Canisters, I havn't found them yet.
  23. So okay, in the previous Geneforge games I went with a shaper. All good and fun. I had a reasonable time of it with my creations, and it wasn't too tricky. I did have the annoying habit of having my shaper getting ambushed in the first round of combat and dying in a single hit though. The constant need to save and reload got me a little annoyed, so this time I decided to go with... a Guardian. Now, I figured that seeing as its like the warrior class with the least amount of energy that it should be decent as a single stand alone guy. I figured, hey, so I mightn't kill so fast, but with some healing pods I should be able to wade through and survive. Not at all. I'm now up to Dhonals Isle and through the whole time I've had nothing but strife trying to keep my poor guy alive, he dies in about 3-4 hits. I take Alwan around with me and he has similar problems. I have read Matt P's guide, but my sort of gripe with it is that its rather vague on stat investment 'oh yeah, this is good. Yeeeah, put some points in here too.', and I have tried my best with it but in all honesty, my Guardian sucks terribly. I went with a missile weapons guy since the words "extremely effective" caught my eye. So without further ado, heres my current stats: Level 15 Guardian Strength: 6 Dexterity: 8 Intelligence: 2 Endurance: 5 Melee Weapons: 3 Missile Weapons: 9 Quick Action: 6 Parry: 4 Battle Magic: 1 Mental Magic: 1 Blessing Magic: 1 Spellcraft: 1 Fireshaping: 1 Battleshaping: 1 Magic shaping: 0 Healing craft: 3 Leadership: 8 Mechanics: 9 Luck: 2 Currently wearing, Agent Cloak, Fibrous Shield, Acid Baton, Girdle of Strength, Nimble Sandals, Leather Vambraces, Ruby Breastplate, Shielding Band, Miner's Gloves, and Blessed Bauble. :| where have I gone wrong? what can I improve so I can actually survive? So I can really kill things 'exceptionally well' like supposedly a missile Guardian can?
