  1. He's in Melanchion's Keep in the northwest corner.
  2. Well there are the quest collection items: Skribbane Flawless Crystals Bags of Meal Research Notes
  3. Engineering physics No foreign language requirement and a smattering of introductory engineering classes. Kind of a soft engineering degree since the most courses were in phyiscs.
  4. Now, now, Aran, you're a mod, you should know better than to try to beat the autocensor in English.

  6. The Myth Adventure series by Robert Asprin and Jody Lynn Nye (added to get around an income tax agreement with the IRS) The Hope and Crosby Road movies meet fantasy. An aspiring thief is apprenticed to a master magician. Unfortuneately the master is killed just after summoning a demon. Then things really go bad as the apprentice finds he now has to really learn magic quickly if he wants to live. I'm surprised no else has mentioned this. Phil Foglio illustrated the original books and a short lived comic book version.

    Thank You Diki!

  8. It wasn't transporting that took so long, it was learning how to aim it. Go to the testing ground and look where all the misses went.
  9. I tried a singleton on torment and had the same problems as SoT before reaching Formello. I restarted, but haven't had time to really play it. The last time I used disadvantages was Nethergate: Resurrection which used the old BoA game engine. There it really boosts experience so you can negate most of the bad effects.
  10. Hold off until after the Gnass quests and get training in Nature Lore and Arcane Lore instead of using skill points. You can also hold off on spellcraft by increasing your level in mage and/or priest spells. Only pick one weapon type for fighter for melee attacks, so either melee weapons or pole weapons, but not both.
  11. Quote: What does the "-1" and "+2" do? These are the bonus or minus added after calculating weapon damage. A steel dagger will do 3 more than a stone dagger.
  12. It depends upon what bonuses you need at the end. There was only one Magus vest and by that time you should have found better armor. Enchanter robes are found earlier in the game so use them when you get them.
  13. If you can find it at a library or used bookstore there are: Silverlock by John Myers Myers - A lighthearted adventure through the Commonwealth, a land where almost every fictional character resides. Lots of fun to see how many books you recognize out of the over 40 used. Some reprints have a list at the end of the sources and a flik sung at sci-fi conventions about it. You get to see some of your favorite stories in a really different light. The Compleat Enchanter and The Wall of Serpents by L. Sprague deCamp and Fletcher Pratt - The adventures of Harold Shea through different worlds based on mythologies and literature. All Harold wants is to find the girl of his dreams and instead he's off to help Thor and Loki recover Thor's hammer from the giants. Then it really gets interesting.

  15. You can always save near the end and go back to do Gladwell's quests real quickly to see the change. It means you don't have some nice items and spells earlier in the game, but it won't matter too much. Ever since Avernum 4 it no longer pays to take disadvantage traits to get more experience. You just plateau sooner in getting less experience.
  16. There are two of them. One on each side of the Portal Keep basement. Sorengard should give you a reward without Solberg being there. It worked fine on the Mac last time I tried it.
  17. The version update information used to be a text file in the download, but I don't see one with the last version, 1.02. Some of the changes might have been in the PC version.
  18. There are some places where if you don't have enough potions to recharge you can't make it through without cheating. You are on a one way trip and can't go back legitimately.
  19. Invulnerable potions are a great safety net for this type of problem. Save them for the special scripted fights to guard against a sudden high damage attack. 16 endurance should have given you enough health to protect you if you have great armor. Increase dual wielding to improve damage.
  20. I went with lich because of a table top AD&D game where two high level characters were sleeping in an inn. The one on watch saw a lich at the window. The other character died when the lich killed him in his sleep. The one that was awake pointed out that he yelled his word of recall spell and it wasn't his fault that the sleeper failed his roll to wake up.
  21. Completely scripted fight so you can't do it any other way.

The stylus is in the correct position to play the record from the beginning. Written around it in binary arithmetic is the correct time of one rotation of the record, 3.6 seconds, expressed in time units of 0,70 billionths of a second, the time period associated with a fundamental transition of the hydrogen atom. The drawing indicates that the record should be played from the outside in. Below this drawing is a side view of the record and stylus, with a binary number giving the time to play one side of the record - about an hour. "The information in the upper right-hand portion of the cover is designed to show how pictures are to be constructed from the recorded signals. The top drawing shows the typical signal that occurs at the start of a picture. The picture is made from this signal, which traces the picture as a series of vertical lines, similar to ordinary television (in which the picture is a series of horizontal lines). Picture lines 1, 2 and 3 are noted in binary numbers, and the duration of one of the "picture lines," about 8 milliseconds, is noted. The drawing immediately below shows how these lines are to be drawn vertically, with staggered "interlace" to give the correct picture rendition. Immediately below this is a drawing of an entire picture raster, showing that there are 512 vertical lines in a complete picture. Immediately below this is a replica of the first picture on the record to permit the recipients to verify that they are decoding the signals correctly. A circle was used in this picture to insure that the recipients use the correct ratio of horizontal to vertical height in picture reconstruction. "The drawing in the lower left-hand corner of the cover is the pulsar map previously sent as part of the plaques on Pioneers 10 and 11. It shows the location of the solar system with respect to 14 pulsars, whose precise periods are given. The drawing containing two circles in the lower right-hand corner is a drawing of the hydrogen atom in its two lowest states, with a connecting line and digit 1 to indicate that the time interval associated with the transition from one state to the other is to be used as the fundamental time scale, both for the time given on the cover and in the decoded pictures. "Electroplated onto the record's cover is an ultra-pure source of uranium-238 with a radioactivity of about 0.00026 microcuries. The steady decay of the uranium source into its daughter isotopes makes it a kind of radioactive clock. Half of the uranium-238 will decay in 4.51 billion years. Thus, by examining this two-centimeter diameter area on the record plate and measuring the amount of daughter elements to the remaining uranium-238, an extraterrestrial recipient of the Voyager spacecraft could calculate the time elapsed since a spot of uranium was placed aboard the spacecraft. This should be a check on the epoch of launch, which is also described by the pulsar map on the record cover."
  23. Go to Jeff's blog and read some of his thoughts on selling games and the pricing at stores. Also go down to Blades of Exile forum and read some of the topics involving updating the open source code to current computers and operating systems. This is working on a game that was actually documented for players as opposed to the others that Jeff has to hunt for his notes on what he did.
  24. It's not going to happen because Jeff doesn't want to spend the time rewriting code which he claims he isnt' that good at doing. It's the reason you haven't seen any of his games on other platforms. Also he doesn't see enough extra sales to warrant his using the time when it can go to his next game. Welcome to Spiderweb Software. Please leave your sanity at the door.

It's the seminal work of modern fantasy, but it's also not really like contemporary fantasy. More accessible than Dunsany, maybe, but still a bit archaic. On the other hand, the odd digressions into Bombadil and the staggering appendices are part of what shaped fantasy world-building. JRR Tolkien's son, Christopher, started releasing the remaining works including the rough drafts of LotR. It's interesting to see the earlier versions and what got transferred to the appendicies instead of bloating the final version.
