  1. The effects increase linearly. However getting mage or priest spells up to 17 allow you to cast the higher level spells that do more damage. You can use certain items to increase your levels in spellcraft, mage and priest spells. You've reached the point where you have to wait two levels to increase skills or use wisdom crystals and knowledge brews to get them.
  2. Avernum 1 and 2 really don't benefit from negative traits because there is a level cap that is easily reached. Avernum 3 and Blades it can help if you go up fast enough to use the extra levels to compensate for negative effects. It works best for a singleton game or characters where the negatives don't hurt you. For example brittle bones on a spellcaster that doesn't get hit by melee attacks.
  3. Do you remember that basin that you drank from when you first entered that level? Drink from it again and for a short time the chaos wight won't confuse you when you attack.
  4. Killing the Mayor before getting a quest from the priestess in Spire means that you won't get that quest. This quest mostly changes the balance of power in the Abyss so it affects all the endings regarding the Abyss, but doesn't really affect what you do in game.
  5. Avernum 6 has more death nodes where if you commit crimes in the Castle and certain towns you die or are imprisioned. Spire and Bargha are open season.
  6. There are two approaches. The first is retreat into a tunnel and try to take on the fewest number at once. Keep someone back to heal the frontline that blocks the passage. The other way is place someone into melee with each of the sentinels since their melee attack is weaker than the range attack. This is harder since it takes longer when you divide your attacks instead of concentrating on one at a time. Don't forget to charm any summoned creatures.

  10. Increasing a spell level means you do one more die of damage with that spell slightly increase a spells duration. You can read the spell descriptions in the player's manual to find the die value of each spell. Spellcraft only increases it by 0.75 times the die. If you plan to use the spell frequently then get extra levels of the spell. Otherwise one level is usually all you need.
  11. I had this happen before on a Mac. For some reason the installation program was saying there wasn't room to install the games. I think I had to manually copy the folder for each game over to the hard drive from the CD-ROM and then install it on the hard drive.
  12. They just keep coming and coming like waves of zombies. (Sorry Ephesos) There are certain places that respawn both inside and outside the south and west gates of Formello. With enough patience and potions you can loot Formello and the neighboring lands. I did most of it one time or another to help Synergy fill out the item list.

Depending upon which version you use for source material you could have lots of quests from hunting the mythological monsters including the Questing Beast, chasing after the Green Knight, and of course the Holy Grail. Then there are all the battles and tournaments. You could even do it Nethergate style with players starting out in Arthur's court or working for Morgan le Fay.

  15. Every spell in Nethergate is a druid spell. This is the first game where he has broken out the thief skills into a separate class instead of just a skill set where the mage spells could overlap them.   16. There are two batches of each of the four types of corrupted mushrooms. Either of the two is acceptable for each part of the quest.
  17. The eggs are in one of the spider webs hanging on the wall. You can't get through the barrier at Tenevra until later when you get a quest to go there. When it happens ask around the Castle for help.

    I thought of it too before scrolling down to your post. According to the Bible, Adam's job was naming things.
  19. Jeff did tone down magic a bit in the later games or maybe it's just that creations became so much more powerful. But a pure agent can do so much more on his own as long as you play to his strengths and avoid getting swarmed by playing it as a guardian. When G3 made daze work as an area effect the agent became even more powerful since he could now fight swarms without having to whittle them down from an edge. It's hard for most players to have the patience to slowly move up and pick foes off one at a time. I know I still want to go in there and take them all out at once.

What that means is when playing Geneforge, in the time you reach for a drink the monsters can cross the screen and start attacking you while playing Avernum you can go to the kitchen and have a meal without missing anything. Geneforge really requires going into fight mode when you enter zones that aren't peaceful cities. Even then there are times when you want to use fight mode to sneak around guards to loot the place. Fight mode gives you time to think as you slowly advance. Also in Geneforge 1 to 3 you need 5 action points (AP) to attack so if you move too far you lose the action. It takes some getting use to for combat.
  21. That looked like one of the two places in the Abyss where you can find the mushrooms, the crypt with the banshees. If that was the place the mushrooms are in the northeast area near the river and look like ordinary mushrooms. When you look at them in inventory they have no value unlike regular mushrooms.   23. Unicorns, the other white meat, are a perfect choice for those that can afford them. As to the question of why we no longer perceive spirits, it because science tells us they don't exist. If they can't be measured or detected then they fall to the wayside with all the other mythological beings.
