  1. Avernum 5 is the closest to Avernum 6 in style and difficulty. Avernum 4 was the first with this engine, but lacks battle disciplines and has some other flaws including a weak plot and flat terrain. Avernum 1 and 2 are considered the best for plot, but it's a different game engine and some people don't like them.
  2. The monster caretakers are the Circle of Life cult. You can guess what movie Jeff had watched when he thought of that one.
  3. Windows 3.1 could crash if there was spike in the computer's power. But that's more the fault of the cheap power supplies not filtering the line current.
  4. The 2nd construct test was one of the few places I used two and it's worth it just because it will be a long time before you can do that fight without them.
  5. You can get the dispel barrier spell by doing Gladwell's quest in the Mertis Spiral and that is slightly easier. Return Life spellbooks are both in the Eastern Gallery after doing the Abyss - AL 7 - Eastern Gallery 10 (Abandoned Workshop) AL 8 - Oculus Cult
  6. Also go into melee with the red construct since its melee damage is less than its missile fire attack. As Lilith said pile the best armor on the highest health character and make it your lead character. You just need to survive and not destroy them.
  7. It says Avernum 6 at the top. Avernum 4 forum was merged into a general Avernum forum.
  8. I did some beta testing for Basilisk Games and the process is significantly different. Jeff likes to keep testers isolated so he can get unfiltered opinions on his games and not have a few testers influence the group. Basilisk Games has a separate testers forum where the testers can post bugs and discuss the game as it evolves to make major changes in how things work. Beyond this isn't working or there's a typographical error, there are discussions on how the game is played and how to make it better. This slows down game development since beyond the time spent recoding the game, there is additional time to retest the entire game to see how it changes for instance when the regeneration rate for health and mana is increased. Some major changes were made only a month before release and after release the versions added more changes based upon player's requests. While Basilisk Games probably listens more to its players especially when the ideas are neatly listed by category so they can be easily viewed, Jeff has made several improvements to Avadon over the earlier games that show he has been reading the forums to answer complaints.
  9. Jeff listens to his beta testers, but he doesn't like what we say. Just because the early testers are all power gaming min/max insane ..... They are very good at catching bugs and exploiting the game engine in ways that Jeff really doesn't want. It was much better before he got so many saved games and explanations about how his poor bosses were getting destroyed.
  10. Vahnatai are slobs. They left weapons and cloaks all over the place. You can find razordisks in the Roach Factory.
  11. Food was a problem in Avernum 6 beta testing where you had to restock about once a game play hour.
  12. A pure archer is useless, but having the skill isn't since there are enough places where range attacks are useful. In the Honeycomb, plinking away at unstable masses that can't hit back.
  13. Winter in Yellowstone. Say hi to the bears for me.
  14. Basilsik Games has a smaler and friendlier forum. Less activity and posting outside of the games keeps it quieter than here. So Tom, the game designer, can easily see suggestions for improving his games since a few members compile lists of ideas and changes. Also having an older average age helps too.
  15. TM and others didn't like Avernum 4 compared to the earlier games, but I think it was the signature quoting Jeff's personal comments from a beta testing e-mail that really rubbed Jeff the wrong way. Jeff now has a permanent ban on repeating beta testing comments even when they are harmless and humorous.
  16. E-mail Jeff since Apple likes Jeff for making games for the Mac, but we have no idea whether either side has done anything about Mac App Store. Jeff doesn't like the idea of price limits on his games.
  17. All the games are self-contained with some places giving summaries of past events. Starting with the first game will give you an idea of what motivates later games, revenge. The biggest difference is the game engine changed between the first trilogy and Avernum 4. Some people can stand one game engine over the other and there are differences in what spells do so read the instructions.
  18. Just ask what happen to TM over his Avernum 4 comments.
  19. There are plenty of new items with bonuses that haven't been seen in previous games, however Jeff didn't spend that much time on too many new item graphics tiles.
  20. Most items are hand placed, especially named items (armor, weapons, rings, etc.), but items dropped from generic monsters still have a random element with each monster type having a table of items it can drop. Jeff loves to reuse computer code so some things don't get changed. Same with text for the instruction manual so Slith still were mentioned as getting the Exile intelligence bonus long into the Avernum series.
  21. What the Turtle Moves mean was there is a narrow passageway north of where you killed Reptrakos that has some lizards and at the end you should find a scale. At least I know that happens in Nethergate: Resurrection version since it's been years since I played the original version. The entrance to the passage is east of where you killed him in that dungeon. You were supposed to ask Reptrakos for a scale and he gives you a minor quest to hunt down a thief and recover a stolen item within his lair.
  22. Try shift-D and use the backtostart cheat code.

  24. Get through Avadon: The Black Fortress as a singleton in torment difficulty. That may be harder than it sounds.
  25. Research funding is easier to obtain for continuing an existing line of research, than it is for starting a new line no matter how promising the results can be. Funding agencies are more willing to fund an improvement than take a chance on getting a failure.
