  1. Mazumdar is the one you need to go back to for permission to get the level 3 spell book access after first Berra for evidence and Anaximander for quest completion. The later games are very picky about doing things in a specific order.

     

    You need the evidence from a plague so the Slime Pit quest would have worked as well and you can always go back there for the evidence (Erka's Rune in room by boss monster) if you missed it the first time.

  3. I think the 200 item limit came from Dikiyoba collecting and storing useless items in a zone. I don't know if anyone else ever bothered bringing in items and counting. The disappearing items has been hard to check because players aren't always sure that they dropped them in the spot.

     

    There is a similar bug with the junk bag where too many items turns all the items into a low value item.

     

    The empty chests in all new zones is an irreproducible bug because if you replay from before this problem occurs, even duplicating your actions doesn't cause it again. It appears in several recent games corrupting the save game file once it occurs.

  4. That's because it's more profitable to sell for an annual fee by forcing "upgrades" than one time for each computer. The old sale model is gone to make way for a steady profit stream. Now you don't always own what you buy by download.

     

    I was happy with my older operating system until I could no longer access web sites because the older browser is no longer supported or upgraded.

  5. Basilisk Games' Eschalon had the equipment wears down and repair it mechanism. You had to decide whether you wanted to learn the repair skill to do it yourself or just spend money to fix it. The major point to repairing equipment was it improved value for selling it. So camping near a merchant and going to see if they randomly stocked a worn item that you could repair and then sell back was an easy way to raise money.

     

    Otherwise the mechanism wasn't worth it.

     

    HackMaster, a table top role playing game from Kenzer and Company had the equipment wears out in combat and you need to repair it too. The major thing was armor provided less protection as it got damaged so it would protect you less because it could no longer absorb damage.

  6. The problem isn't a lack of community, but that this is a relatively quiet period where most people don't come by to read posts and reply. Several people that have posted in the past about installing games on virtual machines are just no longer around. Things will be this way until the end of the year when we get closer to the next game release.

  7. With the remake coming I went back and replayed the game and generated the item list with zones, the major item locations, quests, canisters, and some other useful information. This was take from play throughs, Matt P.'s walkthrough, and scripts, and Hint Book.

     

    This isn't complete, but will get you through most of the game and you can alway use the Walkthrough in the Header link for more information.

     

    Since you don't get experience from opening locked doors and containers, there isn't any point in raising Mechanics up to 30 and even using the Tinker's Gloves for another 2. There are a surprising number of locked things that need over 25.

  8. I replayed Geneforge 1 and the boredom of hauling every bit of sellable items to a merchant and draining every last gold disk from the economy to buy training is tedious. At least the remake should have the junk bag so I won't get the message about not being able to carry an item because I ran out of slots. 

  9. Where did you download your version of Exile?

     

    I remember back in 2001 when I first installed the Exile game demos from a 1000 computer game disk, that I couldn't get Exile 1 and 2 to run, but Exile 3 worked fine. However the full games bought from this site installed and ran fine for Windows 3.1.

  10. Avernum 3 remake time counter for towns has a list of day that Slarty found from the scripts. The Exile games are probably similar.

     

    There are the Formello murders and the Orb theft which I think are quest related and not so much a time event. The Tower of Magi event is timed, but it depends upon the game with Exile and Avernum 3 being after day 110 and the remake taking place later.

  11. So with the remake coming up, I decided to replay the original with a challenge. Playing on torment difficulty so it counts, Slarty. A melee guardian as an Advanced Dungeons and Dragon monk where I don't use a sword or even a stick for melee and avoid range attacks as long as possible. This means getting melee weapons to 30 by the end of the Demo and having quick action at 21 later on in the game.

     

    It turns out this wasn't as hard a challenge. I could do almost half the game before needing to do a range attack. Damage isn't as great as using a weapon and I missed out on the bonuses. The reason for range attacks was this was the only way past turret and pylons with overlapping attack areas. 

     

    Southbridge was the first with the bridge and northeast room in the cave. The Underground River north of the sunken bridge, and the Guarded and Patrolled Bridges both have reaper turrets. The Patrolled Dell needs spray crystals to deal with groups of Sholai warriors. Eventually it was easier to use batons to pick off creations and Sholai to speed up the game or spray crystals for the Icewalls spawners.

     

    In the end I even explored the challenge area, Shaper Crypt, before dealing with Trajkov and Goettsch to control the Geneforge.

     

    I shamelessly used leadership at 12 to make fights easier especially in the Great Temple. Mechanics was 21 before the Tinker's Gloves. I was level 23 with 12 unused skill points.

     

    There's even a dopamine high from slapping around creations. :)
