  1. Man, oh, man. I see posts like these and get very frightened. Is it possible to just PLAY the game without spending a few hours figuring out various characters and politics? I have played the three previous games as well as the Avernum series but this one seems to require a whole new learning curve. I am less interested (actually not at all interested) in working out stats than just playing the STORY. What are the odds of ending up with totally lame, unplayable characters if I just dove in? Conversely, will I miss some interesting story lines if I don't dedicate a few days figuring out the various politics and backstories?
  2. Found the reference that I was thinking of. In the walkthrough, it says: This is the remains of the old tower of the magi. There's a fair bit to do here. Talk to Oliver again to see what he's got for sale. At least buy his knowledge crystal. The Bladeshield charm is pretty nice, too, so you may want to go ahead and get that. What Oliver?
  3. Hi Is there supposed to be a shopkeeper in the Tower colony? I thought there was a subquest there involving him. Also, is there any way to get past the barred gate on the second floor (the one you access by taking the east staircase).
  4. Hi I'm off to see Khoth, but I can't seem to enter the secret passage. I talked to the spirits outside his cave, then did away with the statues. According to Far Sight, there is a secret passage in the NE corner of the room with the statues. However, even banging my head against the wall won't let me enter it. Am I missing something? I have been at Erika's place. I killed the dragon in the giant lands. Is Khoth teed off about that?
  5. Erk, sorry, I'm obviously talking through my hat. Forget what I said, must have had something weird for dinner. My question still is, though, why is Nethergate more expensive when it is, apparently, a smaller game?
  6. Hi I've played the "old" version of Nethergate (demo only), with the flat graphics. Because I lack attention span I just noticed that there is a newer version out with Geneforge-like graphics. I don't suppose one can register the old version any more. I noticed that Netherworld is more expensive than the other games, yet I believe it's actually a physically smaller game, in terms of gameplay. Have there been additions made to this game? Why does it cost more? It worth starting the demo all over again?
  7. A search for Torvald did not find any such discussion (about this character) Just because something has been discussed in some fashion in the past doesn't mean someone might not want to bring things up again, perhaps in a different perspective. While some folks here seem to have been living on this forum for years, it is quite possible that others drift in and out as they discover and play these games and then move on. It's probably tiring for the "regular" contributors here to see the same questions asked or opinions stated if the answers can be found with the search feature, but to "noobs" like me, it's all new. Reading an old thread is just not as much fun as starting a new discussion - especially since some get annoyed if old ones get bumped up for interest's sake. (and considering the amount of bashing AV4 gets, reading the older stuff isn't exactly encouraging to those who find the game a whole lot of fun and don't really care one way or another how one moves from one square to the next) Oops, I think I got on a soapbox there. Gotta go!
  8. Hmm, I thought it was a reference to Linus Torvalds (Linux developer).
  9. Yo slartucker! That's a helpful list, but hard to read because of a line height problem in your table. It's a Mac vs PC thing, I think although it displays fine in Firefox (darn that Explorer!) Try changing TR HEIGHT=13 to TR HEIGHT=16 or some value around there. PC fonts display larger than Macs. If that ain't it, there are other ways of fixing this - if you like I can give you a hand with the HTML. (unless you don't care for us poor, neglected PC folks...
  10. Hmm, well, I got tired of beating up pylons (odd, when faced with hard-to-kill humanoid mobs I don't seem to get as frustrated. I guess it's more fun when they have a face Anyway, I cheated my way out of this. Taking Epheso's advice as a hint of sorts, I used the cheatcode that makes all monsters visible. It was then quite easy to see the obvious path. Yeah, it's a cheap way out, but I got through this, got the goodies, and am back outside to have fun with this again. Thanks to all and sorry about my rant.
  11. You have got to be kidding me. This would mean that you have to play the game one step (grid square) at a time and reload the game every time a pylon comes into view. Is that the intent here?? (spoiler) If I travel north (west of Fort Remote), I have three options: The east path leads to 5 or 6 stairs down, all of which end up with pylons at the end. The middle one just leads to a bunch of golems and those zombies. The west one has a pylon right in the middle - no way can you slide past that. Am I missing an entrance somewhere??
  12. Well, I'm pretty much ready to give up on this. I'm in that horrible mess west of Fort Remote and it seems like I'm playing a different game! So far, I've hugely enjoyed this game (having played Geneforge before Avernum, I rather like the way this one works) but I'm quickly losing interest. I can't move two steps without freezing (that shield spell that is supposed to help prevent that is utterly useless) - whoever said you can get through this by hugging the wall is either smoking something they shouldn't or has characters that are thinner than mine. Of course, it's hard to tell in which direction one ought to go hugging those walls - by now I'm so totally lost that I'm running around in circles. Yes, I'm sure there is a way to get through this, but it seems to be a tedious process that is anything but fun - this is supposed to be fun, isn't it? Kinda tired of spending a half hour per pylon to get them out of my way only to find that I'm back where I started. In desperation, I changed the setting to "easy" and am even using cheat codes now, just to get this bit over with. My question is, is the rest of the game as frustrating as this bit, or do things get back to normal game play? If this were the end of the game I'd just quit, but I'd like to do the Abyss piece which, as I understand, can't be accessed until this quest. However, if the rest of it is like this, I really can't be bothered. Yeah, I'm as bummed out as I sound
  13. Got rid of the golems, but what the heck is the magic password to give to the two monsters in the south? Do I have to talk to someone in the area to get the pass phrase, or do these two need a good smiting?

  15. Only if you're naked. As I understand it, items that add into or mage/priest don't seem to count toward this.
