Can anyone tell me if there are trainers/editors for the Avernum series?

From somewhere in my search as I was learning about this newest Avernum I read about windowing. Right now if I alt tab to another screen and try to go back to Avernum afterwards my system locks up with a black screen for Avernum. Has anyone run into this?

How do you run Avernum 4 windowed?
