  1. Don't know what I did wrong. But the serviles in the complex core of the Medab school are hostile to me. Never has happened to me before. Is it a bug, or did I somehow trip something? Is there a flag I can reset? Edit: Wow. Okay. I'm an idiot. Just have always done the necessary quest first in other games. Ignore.
  2. Because the game is playing on the notion that with great power comes great corruption. Or as TVtropes puts it, with great power comes great insanity. Ain't no thing as a free lunch, etc. Also has some similarities to how drugs, particularly psychedelic drugs can alter the brain.
  3. My specific complaint? It incorrectly lists damage dice for spells. How can I know this? Simple. According to the book, firebolt has a 1-4 dice. My agent has 6 battle magic, three spellcraft, and three firebolt ability. According to the book, that means firebolt should do 12-48 damage. And yet just a few minutes ago, my Agent did 54, then 51 damage with her firebolt. No blessing. Just a-natural. Meaning that we don't have a concrete way of knowing the damage die for firebolt, or any of the other spells really.
  4. Alright, I'm doing a run through of G1 right now with a shaper and super suped up creations. Naturally, they have always gone first in combat. Till now. The change? If you can believe it, my luck stat. There is a servile named Dig who sells for stat ups in luck for 500 a pop. Being the miserly sort, I had about 17000 gold, or just a little more than enough to get 30 luck. Imagine my surprise when my Shaper starts to get initiative ahead of his faithful vlish. No changes to his dex or quick actions. As far as I know, no one else has noticed or discovered this. Luck has always affected many more things in G1 than the other games. But I never knew to this extent. This begs for testing of other Geneforge games for a similar effect.
  5. Its fixed. Had to do a system restore to a few days earlier. No idea why. But they're fixed.
  6. Just tonight I wanted to play some good ol' Geneforge. When I clicked the icon, it immediately crashed and said "unhandled exception C0000005 at address 00447903" Tried G2. "unhandled exception C0000005 0042892a" G4. Crashes without error prompt. Same with A5. Geneforge 5 and Avadon and Avernum 6 demo still working. And yes, I have tried redownloading the Geneforge 1 and 2 demo. No dice. OS: Windows 7 Processor: Intel i5 2400 VCard: 560 Ti Driver: Unchanged since when it last worked Edit: Just tried the G3 demo, which has never been on my computer before. Got an unhandled exception error. Also tried Avernum 1 demo, the old version. Worked without a hitch. Seems to be a problem specific to both the games using the old G1, G2 and G3 engine, as well as the one powering A4, A5 and G4.
  7. Its the one with the tinker's satchel behind it. Just how does one get to it?
  8. Have explored practically every bit of all zones in Kva area, yet no ogres. From a quest in the first bit in the game. Where the heck are they?
  9. I've finished the quest now. What are the consequences of telling the wizard dude?
  10. Are there any actual consequences of any sort to telling that mage at the fortress about the beast? Don't tell me what they are, just if they exist. Thanks much.
  11. Once of the only bonuses of having so many unemployed people is that they have a lot of time on their hands.
  12. Just recently, the PC gamer blog Rock Paper Shotgun did a short post about the upcoming Avernum remake: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/07/29/role-on-avernum-escape-from-the-pit/ What really took me back is how what dominated the conversation were a quite large number of people declaring their complete and total opposition to paying 25 or more dollars for an old school indie game. Has anyone else encountered this? I thought the fact that Jeff's games were so massive would stymie such complaints, but I guess not.
  13. It gets rid of any way of knowing whether an area or enemy is too tough for you other than trying and getting your butt kicked. In a Geneforge game, I could right click the Golem and see that it has over a thousand health, as compared to a 200 health one I fought in another area. Thus I could deduce that it would be too tough for now. In Avadon now, there is no such ability to evaluate.
  14. I know you can see the percentage, but all the Geneforge games and Avernums since the 4th one have allowed you to see the exact number. Its annoying no longer having that way of knowing enemy strength.
  15. One minor nitpicky thing that's been really bothering me is lacking a way of seeing how much health enemies have left. Before it was always just right click on target. Am I missing something, or is there no way to find this out? That would be a real bummer, I find that information useful.

You have to be pretty dedicated to playing happy-go-lucky in order to pick those, or am I missing some subtle adventurers joke here? In G5, there is actually a pretty hilarious moment where that happens. After being obviously betrayed by a Guardian, your character can say to him upon appearing something like "Hooray! Now you can help me defeat this evil monster which has mysteriously come to life in an area under your control." The Guardian is rather nonplussed by your "optimism." It is so over the top that I role play it as my character having a very dry sense of humor.
  17. The sad thing is, when you think about the real world, are real people any less awful, at least when it comes to those with power?
  18. Besides, what most likely ended up happening is that the Shaper clean up crew saw how corrupted Gottesch was, attempted to take him into "custody," he resisted, suffered an unceremonious death, and his body was left forgotten.
  19. In all your humble opinions, out of all the characters in the Geneforge series, which were the scummiest of scum, the lowest of the low, the most utterly despicable? And alternately, which people in the games do you believe were the whitest in a world shaded in gray? For my personal worst list, I got: -Barzhal, from G2. A neo-nazi in shaper robes. You half expect him to start talking of the infinite perfectibility of the master race. -Master Hoge, from G3. He coldly set up the murder of students under his care. -Shaper Monarch, from G4. Out of all the insane sickos throughout the series, he was pretty much the King Psycho of them all. -Taygen, from G5. While Barzhal may have embodied certain aspects of Nazism, Taygen just goes straight for the Godwin award and goes for the full blown concentration camps and systemic genocide. I think that even the infamous Emperor Tullegor would have had a hard time defending him. As for the best: -Learned Pinner: Out of all the leaders in G2, she was the only one pretty much free from the taint of ruthless choices. Her philosophy is pretty cool too. -Astoria from G5. A Shaper Councilor whose ego isn't bigger than her castle, and didn't view all non-shapers as lessor beings, with an extra boot to the face for creations. Even is willing to compromise her personal power for the sake of her goals, which is pretty much unheard of. Unsurprisingly, the second list is much shorter. Anyone else got additional thoughts?
  20. In your opinion, what are the best and most welcome changes or modifications that Jeff has made to his games as time has gone on? For me, the two that immediately spring to mind are the new encumbrance system, and the support for higher resolutions. For those whose have only been playing for the last couple of years, the old encumbrance system had your weight limit be based on the total weight of all items in your pack. Have too much stuff, or a few too many living tools, and your AP would go down the crapper. It basically meant that one had to constantly juggle items, as inevitably one would need to get stuff sell, make you go over the weight limit, and then have to drop stuff before every single battle. Are we having fun yet? In short, it was a real pain, and its lovely not having to do that anymore. Fun fact. I do believe that the new encumbrance system was in fact suggested by someone on these boards during the development of G4, which was commented favorably on by Jeff. The other change, support for higher resolution, is quite welcome as well. This might just be me, but playing the older games at 800x600 can be hard on the eyes. Having things be able to be in wide-screen now just adds to the goodness. How about the of you?
  21. Got an itch for G-forge 5, thought I would do a warrior. Is shaping worth it? If so, what kind? Should I go missile, or melee? Thanks.
  22. Has anyone been able to find a code for modifying the reputation number for Shaper/Rebel opinion?
  23. I am definitely missing the fyora's extra fire power. The fireball just isn't strong enough right now to one shot things yet, and that fyora helped finish things off in a round, as well as providing another target. We shall see.
